Memorial Day

Blog Posted by Debbie Guzzi: 5/24/2013 4:17:00 PM

I think it's important to remember the non-combatants that serve and have died in the service of our country, as well as the armed forces. This Memorial Day and everyday thank the Lord for Doctors, Nurses,  & Medics who care for our Troops.

How many fewer would come home without the bravery of the caretakers.

They are there when we can not be to be.

This was back in 2004 the USS Bonhomme Richard and USS Columbus I wrote a poem for both crews because we were so impressed. they are on my website. I will try to share the link when I get my computer back. It is down due to a severe virus si I am sending from my IPad. Aloha SuZ

I give a damn, as you all knw my feeling about I am saying our soldiers I initially mean British but applies to all Countries whse soldiers, and their back up teams, fight abroad. An army fights on his stomach i believe the expression goes, so every non combat whatever they do, are as important as the Generals. All part of the jigsaw. They suffer the same anguish, see the same horrors. Their names are on the wall of the, Names of the Fallen. Seren

Although I posted earlier, I must say that my grandson who is presently serving on a Destroyer, has often remarked at the amazing people behind the scenes who get overlooked..I'd also like to personally thank the kindness of a non-military family who live near the Norfolk Va port where his ship was docked, the very first Christmas holiday, shortly after he enlisted..who invited our grandson for Christmas dinner..he was scared, and lonely, hadn't met many of the guys yet.and very homesick those first weeks he was in the Navy. This wonderful family saw him at a drug store.. took him home! There are amazing people in the world.(ps...he now has 3 years since then..no longer a boy! He is a MAN!!

I TOLD you I wasn't through!...One very good friend I made after I was aboard ship volunteered for river patrol in Vietnam...Absolutely one of the most dangerous duties in Vietnam...Anyone who saw 'Apocalypse Now' would be familiar...I never heard what happened to him and to this day it haunts me...

Joyce...One of my childhood friends joined the Marines in 1966 and immediately went to Vietnam where he WANTED to go to serve his country...His helicopter was shot down not long after he got there...His name is of course on the Wall...He was (is) Stanley Green...I also understand fully your point about everyone serving during WWII

I lost a friend who was a nurse in Vietnam. I've never forgotten her. She had such high hopes when she left that day. Glad you wrote this Deb.

Ok. My brother served in the jungles during the 2nd w. w. He got a fungus in his ears that tortured him for the rest of his too short life. My grandpa was a teamster in the Civil war and I could belong to DAR because my famiy was here at the time of George Washington. My step-son earned two purple hearts in Viet Nam and the rest of his life was ruined by that terrible war and my son was lucky enough to be in Intelligence and didn't carry a weapon in the Viet namese War.And everyone served during the 2nd w war. We all went with out. I for one think it is time we outlawed war. Joyce

The Battle of Midway was the largest naval battle in history. Sea planes flew only rescue missions, armed only with a rear machine gunner. My dad had to fly from New Zealand to the Phillipines...He said the scariest part was the long flight there. Once in battle it was pure adrenaline and survival...I remember he said during the battle he never felt more alive in his life...

A little trivia...When they knew that Apollo 13 was going to land in the Pacific, our ship (USS Long Beach) was summoned to be one of the rescue ships...If I recall correctly the capsule had already landed by the time we got there...

My thanks to you cher!... As a proud Vietnam vet I am SO greatful you have chosen to do this...The name 'Non combatant' of course is a misnomer as I'm sure you well know. Vietnam was the first 'war' (another misnomer) where medics were actually armed. The went on patrol with their units and fought bravely with great honor, completely exposed as they treated their comrades. I have no stats but my guess would be that their casualty rate was among the highest. Our ship patroled the Tonkin Gulf so I never had the 'pleasure' of going ashore. All we did was shoot down a MIG (Russian jets supplied to the North Vietnamese) and chase away a few enemy boats... Thanks again! - Tim

So true Craig even the children and spouses left behind, they have given their loved ones over to the care of the government, good government protects and serves, I've always been for public service I wish folks could join the military as NON-combatants as in some countries. [Like get the same military benefits by be in the Peace Core]

Thank you Carrie & Dee so many people serve, I forgot the cooks! Who would feed our troops without the cooks there would be even less a feeling of home.
