Just a word........

Blog Posted by Viv Wigley: 9/9/2018 10:46:00 PM

Hi folks,

Since words are a poet's sustenance, here are a few that never make it to the table, having long fell into disuse. Hope you find them of interest.

Accismus- The insincere refusal of something you actually want.

Absquatulate- To leave somewhere abruptly.

Clinomania- The overwhelming desire to lie down.

Matutolypea- A state of ill-humour in the morning.

Frobly-mobly- Neither well nor unwell.

Exisibilitate- To hiss a poor performer off stage.

Forwallowed- Weary from tossing and turning all night.

Fossick- To rummage around in a pocket or handbag for something.

Heartspoon- The little dent at the base of your sternum.

Lickspigot- The friend who always seems to turn up when they hear a cork popping.

Smellfeast- The friend who always pops round as food is being served.

Huffle-buffs - Old scruffy clothes that are perfect for lounging around.

Mumpsimus- One who rigidly sticks to their opinion, even when proved wrong.

Nod-crafty - Someone who nods in agreement during a conversation, even though they have no idea what the speaker is on about.

Lethologica- The inability to bring to mind the right word.

Quafftide- The hour/season when it is time for a drink.

Thorough-cough - To cough and break wind at the same time.

Quiddle- To waste time on trivial matters in order to avoid having to do important things.

Wonderclouts- Something that looks amazing but is, in fact, totally useless.

Hope you revive one of these fine words and use it in everyday life.

Love 'n hugs,

Viv x

How fun to find playful words. Some mornings I do feel forwalloed and frobly-mobly so I get in my huffle-buffs and simply quiddle. My spell checker didn’t like these words and kept changing them. Thanks VIV!!!!

me too, Andrea. Another good word is 'Gloke', which is to gaze at someone eating in the hope that they give you some of their food. Viv x

Viv, this was delightful! Now when my wife says she's feeling frobly-wobly in the morning I can happily inform her that she's simply experiencing matutolypea, after which, I'll need to absquatulate :)

Excellent idea, Mark. Also, enjoy the bewildered looks on your friend's faces when you first use the word :)

Thanks, CayCay, I do enjoy a good odd word, brightens the language. I quite like 'noggly', which I use to describe those curly bits of polystyrene used in pacakaging. Viv x

These sound amazingly similar to the list of "New" words that were just added to the dictionary in deference to the millennial mindset

Indeed, John, I picked these up from an article by a wordsmith in the 'i' newspaper. There are many more, which we should use in retaliation for the new ones the young 'uns are using nowadays. Regards, Viv

Fossick is another that I like Viv,very appropriate to the many 'emergency' items that my wife seems to think essential to have in her handbag.

You can also use 'Grubbling', Brian, but that refers more to going through an untidy drawer in a desk. Regards, Viv

Excellent expression, Tom. 'Fudgel' is a good one, too, which means pretending to work when you're not. By the way, if youv'e ever had a pint of Jennings 'Snecklifter', a Snecklifter is someone who looks through the pub door to see if there is someone who will buy him a pint. Viv

Quiddle,I like the best Viv.According to my wife the definition might fit me and my poetry hobby to a tee.She refers to my pursuit thereof (on this kindle tablet that I'm using to comment ).as 'dobbing'.Mind you it did result in my 'footle' form so not entirely a waste of effort.

Indeed not, Brian. If she nags anymore at you, come up with a 'Hum Durgeon'. Which is an imaginary illness. Regards, Viv

This is way too tempting, I plan to use them all!!!!!!!
