Forms Contests

Blog Posted by Frederic Parker: 2/22/2020 5:17:00 PM

Ok, I have a problem...so maybe some of you can enlighten me to let me know if I am overreacting. While going over the contest page I noticed contests with different forms so naturally, I looked at the posted poems of the ones giving the contests. I chose three different contests and went back three pages of posted poems by each poet giving the contests and found only one poem any of the poets had written in the form they were going to judge...I found this very disturbing, but maybe I am overreacting...PLEASE enlighten me

I admit, I am one of those judges who usually gives an example. Mainly because I am always trying to make up new forms or forms with a twist. I have had many wonderful compliments on some of the ones I came up with. I have also read many examples of others because it gets me reading some of their work that I may not have read if it weren't for their contests. It's hard to get to everyone as we all know.

What I read here is very disheartening and borders public venting. Not in a thousand years do I think contest judges droll on their own vanity by promoting their work as form examples. Instead I read their intentions as being a helping hand to the contestant, like a teacher to a student. What I see with all this division and bickering as serving as a suppression to the running of the contest. And it would be a shame to look at a once beautiful garden become a feral field.

Personally, I agree with you 100%. I almost always either write to my contest prompt or have written many of the form I request.

Why, almost everyone is saying that writing a contest example or referring to it is a good idea or even a preferable idea. What's being said more so is that a judge should be able to write in the form they require to be able to judge it properly.

Lol.. I'm one of the contest sponsor.. But normally I will give one or two poems as an example.. And I don't know whether I'm a qualified judge or not.. Now I'm afraid.. There are 2 options/suggestions I like to put forward.. One.. Make a panel of sponsors who are qualified and restrict all others from starting a contest.. Two.. Check the sponsor and his poems before entering into the contest.. If you feel that the judge is not qualified don't submit poems on his contest..

for me, It's a poetry site so poems are posted all the time at least if you put an example out it is a signpost to follow, then I can assume to be judged on your signpost

LOL, also Frederic, even if many have written often in the form they have done it incorrectly anyway. Go to many specific form examples and see how many are incorrect but ces't la vie.

I understand your point Craig, I would like to think they would have at least wrote enough poems in a particular form to have a sense of it rather than pick a form out of a hat then ask poets to be judged on it. That might explain why in some contests I would read a winning poem and say "what was that"

I know many usually write an example of the form that they are going to hold a contest on so I'd say they were qualified to judge the entries using that form. But an interesting point Frederic, hopefully someone will come forward and enlighten us. Tom

I have always previously written poems in the forms that I judge in my contests.

Correct Tania and it's not a bad idea to write to our own contest prompt as well. As Frederic alludes, if we can't do it should we be judging the same by others.
