Contemplation on a Friend's Death

Blog Posted by David Brooks: 5/30/2016 10:08:00 AM

May 30 Med...
To self: Today, be mindful of Death.
Most of us rarely think of death. Perhaps because we believe it's not final. Or because it's presumably a long way off, or we're just too busy, to contemplate our own demise. Two days ago, a cousin and friend I've known all my life passed away. Twenty years my senior, he lived a long and happy life, but do you think he would have liked to have had a few more years? Would his family wanted more? Sure he would. They would. As the song goes, "Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die."
We're born to die; every day, we die a little unless we're very old or unhealthy, at which time we die a lot each day. I like to think of death as the end of dying...the death of dying, if you will.  (I think I've stated this in a previous Med.)
After death in this world, then what? Personally, I have faith and a belief in another spiritual life. Regardless of what you believe, at least you're not dying any more. Or are you?
Is there something new to begin? Heaven? Reincarnation? Nothingness? Something to believe in?
Worth thinking about. God knows...I believe.

The Path of Life
by D.A. Brooks

I walk the path of life today
and think on days gone by.
When we were young, and bold
and free, and oh so very spry.

We knew so very little,
   were anything but wise.
Hand in hand and heart to heart,
   each with the other's prize.

We ached to heal each other
   whene'er there seemed a wall.
Our love so deep, we saw ourselves
   as Bogart and Bacall.

Now years have passed, we've grayed
and frayed the edges of our lives.
Raised sons up now and sent them off
   to cherish their own wives.

And life moves on. We're in the Fall
   when most our duties done.
The pace is much, much slower,
   are days a setting sun?

I surely think, still lots to do,
   to experience and to see.
More paths to walk, and challenges
to meet, and things to be.

I walk the path of life today
with miles and miles to go.
Our love still there, and oft' declare
   it still continue grow.

To grow, for this I know.

Great poem David:) Sorry for your loss. It's true that many times we do not think about death. Personally, I'm not afraid to die for I'm sure that my God will be waiting in heaven for me:) Maybe, if you have time, go through my poem"The girl who smiled"

LOVE the quotes!! Woody Allen is a genius. I believe the older poets, ones like myself who have gone "over the hill" so to speak are apt to write a lot more about death and nostalgia. These topics appear not just a few times in my poetry. I have to believe there is something more when we did. It just seems so natural to me.
