Disagreement

To self: Today. Be mindful of Disagreement.

"Disagree," but don't dislike, I tell myself. So difficult; almost as hard as loving your enemies.
I have disagreed with my parents, siblings and best friends, but never stopped loving (and liking) them. But when disagreement occurs with an acquaintance or neighbor, I find the liking much more difficult, especially when the 'other side' might get personal or abusive.
What to do? Stand and fight? Negotiate? Ignore? Pray for them? For me? Listen more, talk less? Kill them with kindness? All of the above?
Disagreements are part of life. Not everyone thinks like I do. Listen. Walk in their shoes. Try and understand.
Or is it OK just to go ahead and dislike? I do enough of that already, without help from anyone. God knows.

I don't really see how disagreements would end up as someone not liking the other person. Why should people agree with me? (Rhetorical)

When a disagreement escalates. Coached boys basketball for 25+ years. Really hard to like some parents. But loved coaching, and loved the kids.

Very interesting and timely topic. It is not the disagreements that cause me to dislike someone... it is how they handle their side of the disagreement. As you mentioned, when they get abusive is when I lose respect for someone. But yeah, the question, "what to do?" I think it's best to ignore them, though it's really hard to do when you see them being rude to many. Especially when they act as though they do nothing wrong... or they make excuses for their rudeness. Thought-provoking blog.

Great blog. I argue frequently. (hear the laughter?) Maybe it stems from having to fight to survive my childhood - I was meek. Then, I went through hell with an abuser---I accepted his worst & didn't confront him. After I escaped, I vowed to never again be the door mat and to stand up for those who could not stand up for themselves. Age has made me too blunt, too frank, at times. I try to find balance and often fail. I feel most comfortable in an environment where lively & intelligent discussions are encouraged-- as long as respect is shown for everyone. Maybe its due to exhaustion, deplete of energy, but I can no longer accept snips and snaps which I believe to be toxic. Your blog is timely and very much appreciated. I am such a mash-up and I wonder if I will ever find true peace while alive. Blessings to you... and I hope you have a good day.
