To self: Today, be mindful of growth.
At some point in everyone's life we naturally stop growing physically. Sure we often continue to put on pounds, but our height, bones and body frame stop growing. Unfortunately, too many of us stop growing emotionally, spiritually and intellectually as well.
Don't lose your desire to learn. Read. Study. Take up a new hobby.
I have no regrets about returning to college at age 48 to obtain a second degree and begin a teaching career. Be open to another change. Another challenge. Maybe it's time. Time to grow some more. God knows.

"Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but - I hope - into a better shape."
      - Charles Dickens

"Seek out that particular mental attribute which makes you feel most deeply and vitally alive, along with which comes the inner voice which says, 'This is the real me,' and when you have found that attitude, follow it."
      - William James,
         The Principles of Psychology

Appreciate those quotes. Particularly the Dickens one. Such is the apparent nature of life, and fighting it accomplishes nothing IMO. A midlife reimagining is a good thing--I just turned 49 and started writing again (wrote prose in early 20s). No more formal education, though. Pretty sure my wife--who put up with every last millisecond of premed, med school, residency, and fellowship (12 years)--would scalp me.

So, you are telling yourself its time to grow some more. Cool! What are your plans? What is next for you? You mentioned a second degree at 48! Awesome... as a retiree, what is your next challenge? I know many. I knew an 80 year old who still went to university.. took one course a year. Are you planning something similar?

UNIVERSITIES FREE?!!! Holy cow... how wonderful. We have good healthcare, here, up in Canada... but we don't have free education past highschool! That is amazing! I've always dreamed of taking University English courses...sigh...maybe one day? Should you go for it, please share your experiences! How inspiring! Gives me hope...

Not sure. 65 in October, at which time I can attend public Universities free in Ga. Creative Writing Masters peaks my interest. So does travel-writing.
