Word of God

Blog Posted:6/20/2015 8:54:00 AM

Yet again I find that my beliefs are strengthened when being challenged not by arguments that will make me reconsider and evaluate, but by being told what I must believe and that I have no right to call myself a Christian simply because I do not exactly prescribe to the interpretation others place upon the scriptures.

My views change, I have never intentionally tried to inflict my views on others, just inform them of my opinions for them to make what they will of it.  As I said, my views change, given new criteria or understanding my conclusions will obviously alter in relation to what I gain from new knowledge.

The bible is full of conflicting information and, although I have read it, studied it, and learned from it, I will still come to my own conclusions from its scriptures.  It was written by man, not God, and therefore contains truths, lies, inaccuracies and misinterpretations.  The classic is about 'a camel passing through a needle's eye', later it was found that the word 'camel' was mistaken for the word 'rope' which looked similar in it's original language.  If you can mistake a camel for a rope imagine how many other discrepancies there may be!

According to the Old Testament neither my wife nor all of my children will ever enter heaven or should enter a church:

Deuteronomy:
A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD. (23:2)

Likewise, when I slipped onto the crossbar of my bike when learning to ride, I could have suffered a similar fate:

Deuteronomy:
He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD. (23:1)

Sounds funny doesn't it? But not long ago a church in England refused to marry a couple because the man was impotent!

So you see, I have to use the brain God gave me to come to my own decisions!

There is however a lot to be gained by reading the scriptures and I will leave you with Chapter 3 of James as this possibly affects our responsibilities as writers.  Whilst technically this is talking about the tongue it equally applies to the written word!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
James Chapter 3
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
For in many things we offend all.  If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.)
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing.  My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
Have Fun and don't believe all you read,
Re the camel or rope..Its not important what it was,what is important is that the message remains the same..Again I love to see the full picture..as if Im seeing a parent with achild..A parent can tell to his child ,you upset me with your behaviour,im mad at you ,but at the same breath ,the parent is saying -I lov e you ,I want the best for you,and I always open my arms to you. So many interpratations,religions,confusions,but only one same word that knots each loop..Thats Love.
Hi dear friend ,many times like you I have questions about the bible,but I know I cant take 3verses from the bible and decide the message given from them.One has to see the time it was written,the people ,the culture,and what the real message was.Words can easily be misinterpratated if not taken in full contest.I do believe Jesus was sent to renew the bible by the message of loving,forgiving,and He came to save us all.So I do believe We are all welcomed to his promised land. You are not a bastard in God s eyes.We are children of the same father in Heaven.Thanks for sharing your blog dear friend..Charma.
Charmaine thanks for your welcome response. In my summary I say don't believe everything you read, but you should definitely read and interpret things the way your own experiences, morals, standards and common sense tells you to. thank you once again for your words.... Ivor
Broken Wings.... just the point I was deliberating! I am somewhat surprised that a few think I was stating my absolute beliefs as I was putting my thoughts into a pot to think about. I don't ask anybody to read my work, agree or disagree that I should share my thoughts, but obviously welcome the feedback....thank you.
Ivor, God did not make those silly rules in the church, the church and writers of scriptures did
I am no Bible scholar nor had read the Bible wholly but am so amazed on how those verses changed the lives of so many people.. The verses provide lessons, guidelines, stories etc.... It depends on how we, the readers perceive such and how we apply.. but with my experience, they are Living Words tempting me in a good way to read more and share... Written books older than our age, sure no one can prove they contain 100% truth.
Mystery... but it is in us, with us our own freewill to believe or not.. Rather taking only a part of something and interpret it as a whole, take, understand and realize the whole... Misinterpretations comes from the readers and not to the writers. I myself disregarded finding unsearchable answers to questions, what I focused on is how it changed me, and others whom I've known~Olive Eloisa
Ivor - first let me say congrats on having the 'stones' to post this blog. Concerning the Bible, you said "read it, studied it, and learned from it". Those OT examples, did you pray for understanding? Be cautious concerning the Bible, for if it is living and if it was written via proxy by God, calling parts of it lies or inaccurate could be a serious sin. I am no Bible scholar, but I think you tread on dangerous ground. One more thing, I also heard once an interp concerning the eye of the needle - was a gate in a city wall that was designed to allow camels to pass through single file but with alot of effort, this to allow access, but not prone to mass assault like a wide gate.
Jesus which was not his name since there are no J's in either greek or Hebrew. His name was Yeshua Son of Joseph and was teaching Judaism. He was a Jew. The only thing and it is a major point is that this rabbi felt all human beings where the 'chosen of God/ the Father and not just the Jews.
We certainly need to judge between good and evil practices, as you say Ivor, and to stand up for what is right, drawing inspiration from what Jesus taught in his parables.
I am not a Bible expert. I am just a Christian who firmly believes the Bible is true. Not trying to start an argument, just wanted to state my beliefs as you did yours. God Bless! (my motto: Agree to disagree)
The old testment was meant to be a history of the Jews, the New Testamant was culled from the writing of the years after the death of "Jesus" - there were many differing accounts of him even among the apostles.
Date: 6/20/2015 12:49:00 PM
I have to disagree with you, Ivor. I believe the Bible is the holy Word of God. Yes, it was written by men, but men inspired by the Holy Spirit of God to write as He directed. Yes, there are some passages that are difficult to understand - especially in the OT. Part of this is because of the use of Jewish idioms not familiar to anyone not of that time period. Also, if you are in Christ you are not under law but under grace. We are no longer under the law (the OT rules and regulations) but our salvation is through faith in Christ by God's grace. Since we are no longer under the law, the passages you quoted above do not apply to you. to be continued...
If a person is comfortable with their connection to God that's great. Organized religion 'missionary faiths' do nothing in the long run but cause wars and destroy perfectly workable and caring shamanic beliefs systems that we have so much to learn from.
Debbie, Actually I never stated my beliefs in this blog only my questions as to interpretation and accuracy. I wrote this blog as a blog is intended for my own benefit to look at my own mind set to help understand it. It was not prompted by others on the site and I am somewhat confused if anybody feels I an challenging their beliefs by quoting from the very Bible they uphold!
Date: 6/20/2015 12:39:00 PM
I'm sorry interacting with others on this site has caused you to feel the need to write this blog. There are many Christians on this site who find it is their duty as a Christian to bring ours to the true God. (That's the one they decided was the true God.) We are not all like that here. Yet, it is beyond useless to tell folks who believe with all their heart & draw comfort from that belief that the Bible is not the word of God.
Tom I am not slamming anyone yet you are slamming me. I'm used to it. I am not the one trying to turn you into a free thinker. I want all to have what they need to be the best humans they can. And Judiasm is NOT missionary. Of the 3 Abrahamic faiths - Chistianity, Judaism & Islam only Judaism does not try to raise converts.
I have tried in many ways for years to explain Bible history to said "Christians" but it is like talking to a 13 year old with their fingers in their ears going "lalalalalalalaaa". Believe what comforts you and helps you grow in the Light. Smile and nod at the folk that God has chosen to approach differently.
Ivor, the two most important words in the bible that need no translation and that you fully understand are: JUDGE NOT
There is no judgement here Judy, simply, amongst other things passing on Jame's warnings, about what we say! But mankind was meant to judge or we could not see the difference between good and evil (or God and the Devil)
