A Salute to One of Our Own

Blog Posted:1/5/2022 8:12:00 AM

Consider this challenge; first, write a proper English/Shakespearean sonnet which requires 14 lines with a rhyme scheme of ababcdcdefefgg all in iambic pentameter (not simply 10 syllables - that's easy, but true iamb meter). Now think of writing (stay with me) seven of those interlinked by the last line of sonnet #1 becoming the first line of sonnet #2 etc, until the 7th sonnet where it is concluded with the first line of sonnet #1, that's called a crown of sonnets -- you might say wow, but I'm not done. Now consider writing 15 sonnets where the first 14 are linked by the last line of each becoming the first line of the next and then sonnet #15 is made up of the last line of the preceding 14 (all rhyming the proper way etc.) That's called a Heroic Crown -- you might say "no way", but I'm not done yet. Consider writing a Heroic Crown and then another & another & another until you've written 14 Heroic Crowns and then the 15th Heroic Crown is derived from the first line of each of the sonnets contained in the previous Crowns. That's called a Heroic Crown of Crowns! It's over 200 sonnets and almost 3,000 lines of iambic pentameter. I understand it and I'm confused! Now consider writing a Heroic Crown of Crowns about a historical event like the American Civil War and you've done what our own Mark Massey has accomplished and published. Oh btw, from what I can find, there have been fewer than 10 ever written outside of Europe and certainly none on this topic. You can peek at a preview of his book on Amazon, it's called This War of Brothers. This may be the single greatest accomplishment by any of our peers here on the soup or anywhere for that matter.  Bravo MARK!

Congrats to you Mark on the completion of this heroic effort. To write one meaningful sonnet is hard enough, but to create over 200 with the stringent constraints of the HCOC and remain true to an historic narrative just boggles the mind! Well done. And hats off to Craig... I love seeing poets promoting and supporting other poets.

I don't think people should help their own blogs go HOT (like some do) - but this deserves to be, not for me, but for Mark.

An achievement worthy of high acclaim, Sir Massey, and one you should be very, very proud of! I will be ordering it myself very soon. A very sincere congratulations to you for this stupendous watermark accomplishment, and thanks to Craig for the heads-up - we should ALL have such a dedicated promoter! Blessings to you both for continued success in all you do - above and beyond, Mark … above and beyond!!

Wow, you guys ... I am humbled by your comments, and not nearly deserving of them, IMO, though I thank you so VERY kindly from the bottom of my heart for your generosity! I don't know if I'd ever be capable of such a monumental accomplishment, but there's such a HUGE difference between capability and accomplishment, and what Mark has done here is far BEYOND extraordinary, and can not be overstated - I have only read one other in my lifetime, and I remember distinctly thinking to myself how nearly impossible it was, and what incredible focus, patience and talent it had taken. I doubt I'll ever find such dedication in these aged bones to attempt such a miraculous endeavor, but I know there's a universe of difference between having a "possible" ability ...

(2) ... and actually seeing it through, and I can only dream. Mark has the realization, and that is a unique crown that he can wear proudly, and a legacy that will carry on for a very long time to come. I am honestly just stunned by this literal feat of poetic excellence, and bow in humility at the feet of a Master Wordsmith! Seriously - it means more than you know that you both think so highly of my work, but I've never done ANYthing that approaches Mark's amazing book of sonnets, and I doubt I ever will. I love you both for the kind comments, because there are few of my peers that I admire as much as you two! Bless you both ... I am truly humbled. But this is Mark's limelight, and he is so very deserving!! :o) <3

Craig, your statement sounds like challenge, in my humble opinion, for the finest poet on this site - no disrespect to fellow poets... but several of his sonnets (as well as other forms) are masterpieces.

Gregory - You are correct in noting the promoter. One of Craig's contests years back was an inspiration for the book - and I also reached to him for help with editing and accuracy. He responded. This site is filled with positive supporters that are dedicated to the art (or craft) of poetry if we are willing to accept it.

Congratulations to Mark Massey for this outstanding accomplishment! I know a little about what he did as I wrote my first (and only) Heroic Crown of Sonnets (The WORD) a few years back. It is not an easy task. Will have to check this out! Thanks, Craig, for posting on Mark’s behalf! :)
