Oldest of five brothers, I was the one who got away with everything. Spent thirty years as a Navy Reservist. People say I'm a little crazy. Thank God, normal people lead mundane lives. My greatest love is kids and I spend weekends working with abused kids with psychiatric problems almost always created by adult animals. I like music, mostly country and early rock. Married for forty years (my wife will be given the Medal of Honor) and have four kids, a 36 and 35 year old and two 23 year olds. The twins are a boy and girl. Including me, my wife has five. Got 5 grand kids. I'm big on amusement parks and would work for Mickey and Donald any day. I've seen a lot of the world (14 countries) and definitely miss the travelling with the Navy. I'm a firm believer in the power of prayer. I love this planet, so I'm going to stay awhile. I do believe war could be a necessity only in defense of your country and not as an excuse to prospect for oil. I believe that if there is any honesty or integrity in Washington, the guy is in the wrong city. People I most admire include Jimmy Carter, JFK and Billly Graham. I'm pro-life and anti- political correctness. I think the problem with political jokes is that most of them get elected.

69--Ooh! My Head

Not realizing how fast life goes by, I just remembered one of my favorites as a kid turns 69 this month. On May 13, 1941, Concepion Reyes bore a child, Richard Steven Valenzuela. He was still to be remembered today, but never to have seen his eighteenth birthday. A career that lasted approximately 8 monthes in the limelight, he took the country by storm with "Donna", "La Bamba" and "In A Turkish Town." Part of the inspiration for "American Pie", I just wonder how far he would have gone had he not taken the plane. Another of my favorites had given up his seat to JP Richardson, The Big Bopper. Waylon Jennings had made it big later in the country music field. Still love the oldies.

I remember walking home from school and talking with my friends. Rumor was he had a rosary in his hands when they found him. I was in seventh grade and wondered why or how. I remember dancing to Donna and jitterbugging to La Bamba. I played th 45 until it got warped. Frank was right, we lived the music, dances were special and the music rocked to our beat. Vince

Nice little history review. I didn't realize that was his birth name. It's Richie Valens, right? big bopper, valens and buddy holly all taken down in one shot. It happened in my home state Iowa, dang it. Waylons sure got lucky that day! I love american Pie!!! May the holy trinity live on! andrea

Wow, he really inspired some great songwriters in his short life, Vince. Don McLean's American Pie has long been one of my favorites. I'm wondering which lines Valenzuela inspired. When the song came out, people found references to many great artists. And I still love the oldies, too. Got to see Waylon perform once and seeing Willie Nelson is on my bucket list. Thanks for the stroll down music's hall of fame. Love, Carolyn
