Healing Power of the Drum

your labored breathing
called out to me
and in my soul I knew
what needed to be done

I reached for the drum
to summon the spirits
called out to ancestors
and anyone who’d listen

gently tapping to the rhythm
of our beating hearts
united as one in a prayer
released to the universe

filled the silence of
your labored breathing
drumming for hours
till the pleading was done

everything had been said
the prayer consummated
left in the hands
of the universe to respond

then it did in no uncertain terms
in an exorcism of sorts
draining the passages
to free your breathing

and so it was
in tune with the universe
the healing power
of the drum

Sundown Meditation

Take a deep breath
Let yourself relax
Close your eyes
Come with me

Inhale
Exhale

Let me guide you
I’ll take you on a magical journey

Give in to the moment
Relax
Breathe
Close your eyes

You’re there
You’re there
You’re outside the Taj Mahal
A full moon bathes it in a silver glow
It’s serene
Take all the time you want
Enjoy the scene
There’s no need to hurry

Inhale
Exhale

You’re tired
Winding down
It’s after hours
And no one is around

The stress of your day
Is the coat you take off
One sleeve at a time
Let it drop to your feet
Feel the freedom
Of the weight off your shoulders

Take a deep breath
You’re at the main entrance
You’re calm
Slowly slip off
Each shoe one at a time

Take a deep breath
Listen
It’s just you and the echo of stillness
It’s majestic with the high ceilings
And luscious marble all around you

Listen
Feel the resounding silence
It’s charming and inviting
It’s calling you from within
Go ahead
Follow where it leads

Enter as the richness
Of the silence envelops you
It’s a droning melody
That feels peaceful and safe
Soothing
Beckoning
You feel light
You feel transported
Your feet barely touch the floor

Inhale
Exhale
Stay as long as you like

You’re exactly
Where you need to be

Relax
Take it all in

When you’re ready to leave
Have one last listen
To the melody of silence

Step over your shoes and coat
You might as well
Leave them behind
You don’t need them

Treasure this peacefulness you feel
You’ve earned it
Let it lead the way
To a relaxing evening
Where sleep will sway you
Between the realms
Of fantasy and reality

Breathe
Relax
And enjoy your evening

Dream Big

Set your sights high
Follow what your heart desires
There’s nothing you can’t do

With your deepest breath
Take in the universe
There’s nothing you can’t do

Dream your dream in vivid colors
Make it all come true
There’s nothing you can’t do

Live the life your soul desires
There’s nothing you can’t do
There’s nothing you can’t do

Sunrise Meditation

Stop in your tracks

Take a deep breath
Stop and relax

Close your eyes
Exhale a slow deep breath

In your mind’s eye
It’s early dawn
It’s quiet and serene around you

Look far out at the horizon
There over the peaceful rolling sea
See a fine line of light in the distance

The sun is about to rise
There’s just a fine line
Of warm brilliant orange
Where the water and sky meet

It’s beautiful tranquil blissful
Let it all soak in

Inhale slowly
Exhale

The sun is about to rise
And you’ve got a front row seat
Nothing could be more important

You’re holding a remote
And you get to press
The PAUSE button
You’re in control

The show is on hold for you
The sun won’t rise
Until you’re ready

Breathe in the panoramic view
Nothing could be more
Important than to be
Right here right now

Put the remote in your pocket
Take a deep breath
Keep looking at the horizon

Inhale
Exhale

See that fine line of orange glowing
And know that you have it on pause
It’s not going anywhere

Take a deep breath
You need to do only
One thing right now

You need to take the time
To unclutter your mind

Much like pulling weeds from a garden
Look at your troubles your worries head on
Call them out
Disown them
Reject them

Grab them by the throat
Pull them out by the roots

Gather every one in a bundle
Take your time
Turn them in one at a time

See how uprooted
They are powerless

Every last one of them
Bundle them all
Into that wooden chest in front of you

Take your time
Take all the time you need
When you’re done
Close the lid
And lock the box

Catch your breath
See how the horizon
Still has its bright orange line
And you still have the remote on pause

Take a deep breath
Feel the freedom
With each breath you inhale
Slowly exhale

Throw the key away
As far as you can throw

Inhale
Exhale
Time is on your side
Relax

You’re holding the remote
You’re in control
The sun won’t rise till you’re ready
Breathe it all in

Right now it’s just you
and your sealed wooden chest

It’s heavy but you can do it
Go ahead and push it off the cliff

One more push should do it
There it goes off the cliff

Watch it tumble down down
Your troubles and worries
Out of reach

As the box hits the sea
Listen to the distant splash
And watch the box sink
And hit the bottom of the sea

Exhale a deep genuine sigh of relief
Inhale your first emancipated breath

Taste the moment
Enjoy the unfettered feeling

Inhale
Fill your lungs with the freedom
You remember as a child

Running through a field of flowers
With the wind through your hair
And laughter echoing from all directions

Soak in the moment
And only when you’re ready
Take the remote in your hand

Feel the power the control
Feel the anticipation of the new day

Only when you’re ready
Press the slow motion button
Let the show pick up
From where you left off

Connect with that thin
Orange strip at the horizon

Be one with it
Feel it slowly widen

Control the speed of the day rising
Let the orange ball of fire slowly emerge

You are in control
One with the universal energy
And nobody can shake your strength

You are light and carefree
In the depths of your heart
Infused with energy

Let the day begin…

A Kind Hello

Proverb 12:25 "Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up."

a stray lost
in her thoughts

i saw her
sitting there
nursing a frown

so i
reached out
compelled
to offer
a warm hello

no reason
no motive
simple
unadorned
unpretentious

the smile
on her face~

it startled me

made me forget
my troubles

suddenly
all seemed
so insignificant

it was a smile~

that changed
in one instant
the color
of my sky

The Elephant and the Ant

There once was a little mighty ant
Who was extravagant and arrogant
Known to be exorbitantly militant
She was so combatant and petulant
They nicknamed her My Commandant

One day she came across an elephant
Elegant and obviously dominant
She started on her typical rant
Then stopped and decided to recant
Both agreed it was all very insignificant

They chatted, it turned out the elephant
Was actually the ant's aunt
Suddenly the intolerant ant
Has become cheerful and exuberant
And now routinely breaks out in chant

Today I Learn To Be a Widow, Lesson 1

lesson one

i wake up alone
for the first time
the silence is deafening

i want to get up
but every fiber in me
is dead weight

i want to call my mother
and ask her how a widow
gets out of bed in the morning
but i won’t do that to her
i will figure it out

i remember how yesterday
i had to run an errand
and the cool breeze
was a reassuring sensation
against my cheek
it felt much like a caress

so i coax myself to get up
and step out onto my balcony
but my body wants nothing to do with it
and won’t move

finally somehow i am up
yearning for that morning caress
i bundle up
to face the november chill
and there it is
around the corner
a sunkiss meets me
my first of many rendezvous

see you tomorrow sweetheart

i love you
you’re beautiful

Don't Overthink

Go with the flow
Where zephyrs blow
Parallel the weather
Light as a feather
Set it adrift
Life is a gift
Open your heart
Play up the part
Let your mind soar
Your passions roar
Wonder if you have a hit
Stop don’t overthink it
You risk paralysis
With excess analysis
Set your dreams free
You be you and I’ll be me
