Sea Change

A tusked wolf dips its paw into the brine
the sea is its restless mother.
A proto creature, its bones already growing
razorback fins and horns, it must seek a shell
to hide beneath. The fanged manatee dies for love.
Before the porpoise leapt, before the whale shipped
its gray prow,
Jekyll and Hyde clawed each other
through a gibbosity of flesh. Where the skin flew,
rat tails grew gills and jagged jaws, while
blind behemoths burst out from small pods.
a saline transitioning that even now
wave-washes my naked feet, as the sea
plows me deep -
and does this cold moonlight reveal
the hidden talons of my ever-flowing father?

Chubby cream grubby against white ice
Hungry somewhat clumsy polar bear heist
Hopefully loping over to an asylum of seals
Tusked beasts bound to become tasty meals

Damp nose oscillates, catch tongue anticipates
Hook claws extend, jagging his cumbersome gait
Ungainly angle rotates blundering bear ballerina
Jaws roar frustrated, mishap sadly signals dinner

Jolly bodied, barrel stocky well insulated brood
Swivel protruding chests to avoid being food
Fear pulls polar threat away, phew! - Relax
Pack pacify, raft drifts after cold cracks

Snowy blows his nose with hankie huge paws
Lucky that chubby has arms strong as oars
Iceberg dips, whiskers twitch while wishing
Imminent swim success - in frigid fishing

Vagabond Bears

Of the polar sort, I am a vagabond bear
Find me due north in the cold arctic air
A lone, tusked walrus is my only cohort
I am a vagabond bear, of the polar sort

Of the grizzly kind, I am a vagabond bear
Moving from one to the next hidden lair
Wander through forest with no place in mind
I am a vagabond bear, of the grizzly kind

Of the panda variety, I am a vagabond bear
In my travels, I can find bamboo anywhere
Playful when I want as is my propriety
I am a vagabond bear, of the panda variety

Of a wishful crew, I am a vagabond bear
A human tired of humans, who really don’t care
I want to stay lost and be someone no one knew
I am a vagabond bear, of a wishful crew

The Tops

up a steep and narrow road
reach the tops
wilderness reclaims a verge
of wintery snags
land juts and tilts
hauls out
lays treeless

clumps and hags
pitch up stricken soil
heap above the miry troughs

loud the heartbeat
nearer to feral thought
then any mouth or ear

swale and quag dawdle
appear to seep listless
no
every bog tunnels shrouded
to fetch up the feckless

harsh and gorsy
heather treading low
the moors mark nothing
only a head of gnashing wind
a whipping dinosaurs tail
blear and chill
bites and grapples

a stone-tusked marl
crofts under
tangles of un-spun fleece
in barb and thistle
sheep piss in running rivulets
thread through
mizzle-pecked rocks
inscribed
by whatever tortures the air

ravens picket grit edges
wings beating back the below
primal caws that lift and speak
for the standing stones
their harrowing
lime-cuffed history

before light founders deeper
black anvils appear
in the lowering

a scant anchoring
a bare farrowing
shorn and scoured aloft
by miles of orbiting
beauty

twenty years later
son sends pictures
of moors long traipsed

the sky in my phone howls

Sea Changes

I have stood on many shores
and felt the long evolution of the deepest waves
where life spawns its leaping adaptions.

I have listened
to the trumpeting of great armored sea-bulls
echoing in the shallow bladder-wrack,
and on that splashing surface
invisible snouts blow from
an ancient depth below.

There where the tusked wolf
first dipped a paw into brine
a proto-creature struggling to survive
its bones already growing
razorback fins.
There also did the fanged manatee
thunder in its savage heart
as it plowed the screeching storms,
tempests that shaped its life
with its glittering saws.

Before the porpoise leapt
before the whale shipped its gray prow
Jekyll and Hyde clawed each other
through a gibbosity of flesh,
and where the skin flew
rat tails grew gills and jagged jaws,
behemoths burst from
slow wading, pod sheltering strays.

All churned in a rolling race
as if a keen edged spray
modeled bones,
a frantic saline transitioning
that even now
as I stand by a washing tide
calls and plows me deep
seeking my own extinct
and monstrous forms.

Rachmaninoff Plays Rachmaninoff

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uqZhnqHMAg

The orchestra strains to be symphonic --- a bee in a tin box.
Cigar smoke thunders, molecules of sound wilt
only to be dialed up through brass lungs.
The combo is quaintly upholstered, a classic sports car
driven by Disney. Outmoded refrains gurgle.
We see the obsolete road ahead, feel the bumps,
the lack of shock absorbers.

The third piano concerto, the romance of the exile.
1940 is pulled from under its Perspex lid, served up
as fresh Prosciutto di Parma consumed in a diner
long derailed.
The mind warps eras, Michelangelo has gone Hollywood,
the 'Creation' sketched on a paper napkin.

Last notes.
Hands too large for tuxedoed minds, stamp
like rhapsodic elephants.
Percussive fingers slam-dunk ivory tusked themes,
Russian bells quake California.
Rolling vespers outgrowing each decade,
times now locked in a recovery CD millimeters thin.

Ode To a Guitar

Your tempered strings and true, O ancient lyre!
Harp-like, thy graceful template shall resonate
Within the hollow confines of my soul
Not tortoise and beech, but rather the ideal
Purity of your design (here but fully
Realized by half) speaks to me
Now as ever before in my youth
Touches, as it were, my heart-strings
(Not inaptly named!) and stirs forth
From the depths of my being a song.

O! if I could master that song sublime
A tune to capture thy several contradictions
'Twere a song would outlive the race of men
Embodying form and function, earth and air
Female grace in curve and force in line
With woman's waist and hips, yet double-tusked
Shoulders square, slender neck, even a mouth
Teeth of gut, a creature turned inside-out
A half-opened signpost to infinity.

Narwhal

Unicorn and fish
joined in, to create a niche
unlike a notion
in the waves of the ocean
it looks really awesome

A whale with a horn
Ocean has a unicorn
it just seemed to be
A Tale of a fish forlorn
Till all the male Narwhals tusked

Tusk and fight they did
For territory they lead
No risk of a fall
Polar ice makes resolve tall
They are nice and cool Narwhal.

Orca Whales and African Elephants
Both, Tower Over Man In Physical Measurements

Orca Whales and African Elephants
Both, Are A Fashion Sight One Won't Forget

Orca Whales and African Elephants
Both, Mammals - Their Offspring, They Protect

Orca Whales and African Elephants
Both, Thru Their Domains, Their Kingly Form Has Swept

Orca Whales and African Elephants
Both, Are Massive Beasts of A Mighty Project

One - Huge & Dry-Hide / One - Slick, Large & Wet

Yet, Both - From The Majestic Mind of GOD
They Loomed Magnificent and Leapt ...
