Premium MemberA Plea to the Dry Guys

Moving like moonlight
I am the OG silver surfer
Fleshwalkers, Dry Guys, Land Livers,
Have been around for,
What, 300,000 years?
Try 20 million years.

We eat stingrays.
Literally. For breakfast.
I have a 360 degree field of vision.
What's directly in front of me?
Don't ask.

Listen, Humanoids,
I'm delivering this plea
To your nearest post office.
Luckily I found a stamp
With my photo on it.

The plea is:
We are different from the other sharks
(Uhh: other sharks don't use post offices)
And are undeserved of their
Ruthless, roguish, reputation.

Yes, we are younger
Than our arrow-headed brethren
(Just 400 million years younger.)
But our brains are bigger.
Evidenced by our lack of interest
In Walky-Talky interaction.

Check your stats.
Us Real Heads are considered
"Shy" among you. Right.
You wouldn't believe
The number of karaoke
Joints down here.

The moon now
Has dipped down
From the world of air
While the sun has made it's rise.

I'm starting to tan in the shallows
A tad too much for my taste.
Stay safe, sentient skin slickers!
I must be one my way now
At 20-25 miles per hour.

Premium MemberThe Breakwater

Large boulders piled high
stretch out into the bay
and form a breakwater
that shields the beach
from high waves
and heavy swells rolling in
from southerly gales.

I have stood there
at the end when the sea
was hurling its rage
and all fury exploded
like bomb bursts of watery
shrapnel into the air.
I have seen such power
subside and tamed
to compliant licks
around the feet of rocks.

More than forty years ago
on a deep breath
I snorkeled down its ledges
into the rock strewn and weedy
world that lay at its base,
places where stingrays slept
and where fish glided
effortlessly along crevices
and over sponge
covered outcrops.
I cradled a fragile seahorse
in my trembling hands.

I no longer have
the confidence to rock hop
its length to the end
but stand where it butts
the land, commanding memory
to whip up a wind
and set wave upon wave
to awaken a soul
from its sleep
and make it feel
the sting of a southerly gale,
wet, cold and wonderful,
once again.

Reasons To Stay

Our sizzling temperatures
like the month of August
on our skyline above the clouds

Swimming with the pigs
dolphins, sharks and stingrays
in our crystal seas

Sunday strolls
on our gorgeous sand banks
and surprising boiling holes

Extravagant boat cruises
to Rose Island
and Blue Lagoon Island

Shaking up to Rake and Scrape
and Goombay music
in our streets

Feeding the taste
of Goombay Punch
and Sky Juice
on our tongues

The sensation
of tropical conch salad
and coconut tarts
filling up our guts

Listening to folk tales
from Bookie and Rabbie
eating flour cakes
and ring playing
on our Out Island playgrounds

Premium MemberFort Myers Beach

The tides began to roll in,
around four a.m, all was silent.
as the stingrays gathered,
constantly, circulating the giant
snails, all the while the docks
shuttered and bounced behind,
the pier while morning shellers,
held on to straw hats, while grabbing
the daily news, from vendor stands,
bicycles lined estero entrance way,
the gallantly, glowing red sun, begin
to rise, the gulf of grandeur, comes clearly
into view, over looking the Caribbean Sea,
colors begin exploding, igniting painted
walk ways, swinging gates, through
brilliant chimes, creating tropical
melodies, where butterflies dances,
as reptiles wink, the pink flamingos,
dip their feathers into cool teal waters,
while sinking beaks into soft sands.

Premium MemberA Martian's Fantasy

The fantasy of a Martian like me
is to explore Earth's vast blue seas
to fraternize with dolphins and whales
to return to Mars with many a tale

of octopus, squid, stingrays and eels
the intense water pressure one feels
perhaps experience rapture of the deep ~
long as my fifteen heads get their beauty sleep

Going West

Once, a hundred cigarettes
glowed in just one cinema.
Arrows flew yet all were near misses,
random unaimed bullets easily knocked over
bunches of whooping Comanches.
Some horses were shot unseen off-screen.

In small Midwest towns fantasy roamed unchecked
nibbling at young hearts and brains.
Many adults pinned their hopes
on the aerodynamic tailfins of Chevy Stingrays
and more spaceship roundness in their homes.
Malls proliferated on the edge of cornfields
where prayers were answered on Sunday.

All this was normal, no one marked our
lack of awareness, we were painted innocent
by a world that had come to terms with
its time.

We knew much was wrong
some radicals fought for the oppressed.
Texas Rangers stood ready to lasso
hordes of cartoon villains.
A few federal agents imagined time travel.

The whole country was going somewhere
and working hard to ignore where we were,
as if in fact, we were all stuck in a movie
peering over the glow of a hundred cigarettes.

The Amazon

The Amazon
By C. Russell

Water flowing fiercely
Blue and green and brown;
I’m wanting to see clearly
Through your liquid gown!

The Armoured Catfish wriggles
Through the sticky mud.
Arapaima gliding,
Splashing with a thud!

The Tambaqui quietly
Searches for a seed
From the nearby rubber tree;
A giant fish indeed!

Pancake stingrays dancing
A watery ballet,
Piranhas darting here and there,
Inviting you to stay!

The electric Eel,
What can I say?
Don’t get too close,
Or you will pay!

The Joys of Nature

He painted the ocean
in fifty shades of green and blue
with his mighty paintbrush of perfection!

He sculpted a garden of coral reefs
and barrier reefs for us to see
with his powerful chisel of praise!

He sketched the outlines
of slithering bonefish and Nassau Groupers,
and sneaky Spiny Lobsters and humpback whales
with his graphite pencil of glory!

He shaded the colors of gliding dolphins
drifting sea lions and green turtles
and soaring stingrays
with his pastel sticks of righteousness!

He crafted a collage
of magical starfish, sand dollars, seahorses
conch shells, oysters, clams and seaweed
with his scissors, glue
and construction paper of greatness!

Into the Blue

paddling out
	in a stylised freezer container
sustainable propulsion
for a fossil fuel by-product boat

he floats into blue tranquillity
	watching the bottom slide by
as rocks weeds and shellfish
	give way to the unfathomable

he navigates his speck of flotsam
	into a world
where cormorants bathe
and stingrays bask in the sun

his cares
	stranded on a sandy beach
their urgency diminishing
in a shrinking line of importance

paddling into blue
	his thoughts ripple
like wind gusts
	stirring but brief

internally focussed
	waves rise like an epiphany
dragging him in
	to an uncharted future

Hull, City of Culture 2017

Hull is the great and unique city where I was born
Sitting on the Humber estuary...proud and all alone
Known for keeping Charles I and his army out through courage and bravery
Also the birthplace of William Wilberforce who helped abolish slavery
The most bombed city outside of London during the 2nd World War
This made a strong community stronger even more
With a long and colourful history in shipbuilding, fishing and trading
The old image of Hull is still there ...but it's fading
The docks have been redesigned as shopping centre's or parks
It has an amazing aquarium that's got jellyfish, stingrays and sharks
The music and arts scene in Hull holds its own against the rest
The 2 mile bridge that spans the river is rated amongst the best
There's many green spaces to chill or restaurants to drink and dine in
It's now not unusual for Hull City or FC to score or even get a win
Hull has been rewarded with the City of Culture 2017
The redevelopment of this great city is very welcome but totally unforeseen

A Murder of Crows
A Shadow of Jaguars
A Flamboyance of Flamingos
A Mess of Iguanas
A Congregation of Alligators
A Crash of Rhinos
A Band of Gorillas
A Thunder of Hippos
A Pot of Water Buffaloes may wallow away,
while A Wisdom of Owls roost for the day.
A Battalion of Falcons would indeed prey,
upon A Horde of Hamsters if that horde came their way.
A Tower of Giraffes galloping by,
while A Caravan of Camels migrate close at their side.
A Conspiracy of Lemurs,
A Court of Kangaroos,
A Harem of Chimpanzees,
A Nursery of Raccoons,
A Shiver of Sharks and A Fever of Stingrays
compete to survive beneath our oceans' waves.
A Pride of Lions,
A Prickle of Porcupines,
and that's today's lesson in animal group classifying.
