When abandon runs dry

For the Contest: Abandon
Sponsor: Constance La France
Written 20.05.2025

To live with abandon is to spend your soul as if the tab will never come, but it always does – by unknown

When abandon runs dry

He spent money with merry abandon,
Like laughter thrown into the wind.
Tossed akin to confetti in events of fleeting joy.
He kept no tabs, no ledger,
there was no tomorrow.
He moved through life
as a flame burns through paper.
Notes flew from his hands,
the way birds scatter startled by gunshots.
There was no guilt in his pockets.
He opened the tap and shouted the bar.
People called him legend and slapped his back,
till the wind changed and downturn came.
Then the centre of gravity shifted,
the barstools cooled,
the phones stilled,
silence frosted all the beer steins.
He found himself orbiting absence
nobody patted his shoulder,
nobody flipped a coin in his cup,
He had poured himself into the room,
and when the keg ran dry,
all the lychees vanished…
they all abandoned him.
He doesn’t speak of it now,
just nods and smiles with that tired kindness
you only learn after the last music notes.

Love you Joe

Premium MemberOktoberfest

It is that time of year again
wooden clog upon the cobblestone
the red telly in view beer maids
slide the giant steins across

long tables inside the crowded tent
huge pretzel and brats hang sparingly
over the doorway entrance while misty
fog pour in chasing hedge hogs

throughout the forest a rather full
Marketplatz beckons my attention span
I notice the Bavarian alps in view
while riding the mechanical bull

I'm quite taken by the lanky block
in the far corner adjusting stocking
dashing to buy a few more hummels
wooden nut crackers and incense burners

Oktoberfest

Stopped at an Oktoberfest
Just to catch the scene -
Big steins of beer, a German band,
Appropriate cuisine.

Some lederhosen wearers
Did compete at beanbag toss,
Then swigged their pilsners cheerfully
With every win or loss.

The port-a-potties waited
With a needed job to fill,
For after every jumbo stein,
I guess you know the drill.

We only stayed a while
On this bright day in Oktober
For I think it would be much more fun
To patrons not quite sober.

The Ole Dragon Dungeon Market

The Ole Dragon Dungeon Market
Shuffling through the remains of the charred village
Massive stone blocks stand tall, majestic ruins
The Ole Dragon Dungeon Market
hidden among the rubble, bones, cleavers and daggers and steins are layered in ash
reins now brittle wrap the post, barrels scattered about
a scorched sign peering out “Pit” portrays an arrow
that has now lost its way, irony.

Beer

Barrels

On wagons,

Surrounded by

Bavarian girls

In folkloric costumes-

Waving at all the tourists,

Raising beer steins as they roll by.

The beginning of Oktoberfest....

The opening parade's in September!

Premium MemberThe Pub Ii

Inside pub steins stout magic spoke
‘neath genie wisps of bangle smoke
Brown cone cigars, deep chubby pipes
Aromatic spills to breach the night.
Music calls to muted songs
Rough knuckles echo Bodhrán drums.
Flute, melodeon, bouzouki*, mandolin
Penny whistles, uilleann pipes, one feisty violin.
Pied piper rhythms, pied piper beats
Bold Celtic persuasions to move proud legs and feet.

To Daver and friendship, thank you!

* Bouzouki...A stringed instrument that could stand up to the volume and intensity of fiddles, flutes, accordions, and pipes.
*uilleann pipes...Irish bagpipes...melodeon. an Irish accordian
