I wake up make my breakfast

I go up stairs on roast my sister

Jose, the kid on the corner --
El Macho -- who knows no English
and who sells himself to eat
(being still not quite dry)
slept last night in an alley
shielded from wind and eyes
by the bulk of two dumpsters
positioned at angles to each other.
This morning, his smile's
as brilliant as sunshine.
And if he's not exactly squeaky clean,
he's only a little the worse for wear --
probably more immaculate than are we,
potential buyers to whom he flaunts his wares....

They say I'm poor.
They say I'm a whore.
They say they're better than me.

Their words like worms
crawl under my skin.

They might as well give up
trying to push me down,
squash me on the ground.

There's a spirit in me,
that rises with the sun daily,
driven by my ambitions.

It carries me to the sky,
where I belong.
I'm a shiny star.

I ascend like a tree,
sturdy like its trunk.
No words can penetrate me.

I know I am decent,
