Opossum

The Virginia Opossum has
A funny little piggy nose.

She keeps her babies in a pouch,
And climbs with her opposing toes!

Gray Tones of Blahness

gray tones of blah ness
settle into apathy
yesterdays flatline

pathetically plain

Tails a Draggin

Dragon’s tail is dragg’in still; He’s been prescribed many pills. Tangled with Opossum brood; his tail’s been re-glued.

Peace Keeping Opossum

peace-keeping opossum with such an ugly pink tail
rids your yard of mice and snakes
a terrific mommy, she keeps her brood close
often is not dead so do not get too close too fast

Gremlin and Gargoyle

Gremlin and Gargoyle, a couple of giant alley cats
Swing their tails hard, knocking away six measly rats
They were looking for something meaty to eat
Finally found a opossum carcass, now isn’t that sweet?

Cacti Games

In the desert, succulents sun themselves; they’ve no need to work. Full of drink they bask; playing Opossum for predatory eyes. Any flower, wild or in a garden, must be jealous.

A Fellow Named Joe

There was once a fellow named Joe
Who saved money for an expensive bow
The bow was awesome
Used to kill an opossum
Which won him a trophy in a show

What Did He See

The opossum had an enormously surprised look on his face.
What did he see? A mouse? A croc? A snake? Guessed Grace.
We did not get to find out, for he screamed and ran outside.
Dove into a bramble bush and did his best to hide.

Cat Lassoes the Moon

The moon cannot be lassoed, the persnickety opossum said.
Cat next to him laughed so hard, his face turned pink, then red.
Depends on how magical you are, the feline said with knowledge of many.
He lassoed the moon, which gave us enough swiss cheese to feed twenty.

The Meals On the Other Paws

Alley cat sitting On a fence post, in the dark; Movement in shadow, Catches his marbled, green eyes; One leap and dinner is served. Such a feast will last Him and his friends, a whole day; Opossum will fight; But, alley cat’s determined One leap and cat is the meal!

A Vain Manx

I once had a Manx who constantly primped; her white underbelly never sported one piece of grass or dirt. She kept so clean and fluffy that we’d no idea he’d had her backside chewed up for three days, by an Opossum! In altercation My cat became Opossum Chow wearing teeth marks.

Objurgatory Crow

Objurgatory crow lookout
Cawing to obdurate friends
Telling them to flee fall garden
Opossum grins by Persimmon
Because berries gone as are figs
Every animal has eaten fill
Ready now for winter's rest

I Know a Woman

I know a woman who vacuums her driveway.
I have eight colors of paint on my hands and arms.
I know a woman whose porch is spotless.
An opossum and family of raccoons live on my front porch.
I know a woman who scrubs her kitchen floor daily.
I took a bath yesterday and I still have eight colors of paint on me.

Freds Opossum Story

opossum lies in the street today
I do not approach it right away
like to keep myself safe said Fred
these creatures often just play dead
Wife said get a shovel and bury it!
Fred did not want to, but she had a fit
When he got back the opossum was long gone
This was a bit of a relief to Fred, he told only one.

how was it back in the day

How was it back in the day? The second-grader asked me.
I knew by now he thought I was at least a hundred and three.
We rode in Conestoga wagons for months, I told him. Threw pianos out too.
Ate whatever we could find, lots of raccoon and opossum stew.
Panned for gold when we got to Califor-eee-ay.
That's how it was
Back in the day.

Annual Marsupial Luncheon

Marsupial luncheon was a huge success
We had enough food with a plausible guess
Kangaroo baby made an enormous food mess
We did not help mama clean it, I must confess.

It’s all in her pouch the koala said.
She is embarrassed. Her face is quite red.
Opossum did not reply. She was playing dead.
All marsupials were amply and adequately fed.

Right of Passage

Meandering along a graveled road I saw an opossum with six young’uns Hanging from her tail, quite a load Meandering along a graveled road, She was probably seeking a safer abode I stopped, letting her pass, her luck runs Meandering along a graveled road I saw an opossum with six young’uns.

Cheddy is Ready

A book is something I do not understand said Mom.
I do a little bit said the daddy opossum, we call Tom.
Let’s open it up and see what it does, junior suggested.
Baby opossum began reading it, and it was fairly congested.
Full of adjectives, nouns, verbs, and the like, read by Cheddy.
He will go to kindergarten next year, and he is totally ready.

Cozy Porch Kitten

The day was warm for November, almost seventy degrees. The cat unrolled her length
to glean the most sunlight possible. An opossum came up to drink the cat’s water, but the
cat was wise, not uttering a sound, understanding opossums do not usually appear in the day time.

Little Brown Rabbit

For many months my wife and I have seen a little brown bunny frequent our back yard from a field in the back that has coyotes, foxes, deer, opossum and raccoons. It returns to the field each day and we always think it will be its last day. But a few days later there it is again. A survivor for sure!

Mississippi Blue Skies

Mississippi blue skies on a Thursday morn The magnolia trees are in full array Close to where the delta blues was born, Mississippi blue skies on a Thursday morn As an opossum scurries through the corn, Where children gather in a sand lot to play, Mississippi blue skies on a Thursday morn The magnolia trees are in full array.

An Odd Noise

An odd noise
burglar?
raccoons?
opossum?
murderers?
home intruders?
My imagination is afoot,
and it is conjuring up some interesting scenarios.

A second sound.
also unknown.
on the porch?
in the garage?
in the bedroom closet?
are they coming to get me?
will this be the end?
are they brutal?
are they mean?
are they monsters?

I am deathly quiet now
waiting for them to get me.
