Shetland Isles
Above Barley,
Clouds Dance Enchantingly.
Flooding Glorious Hills In Jubilant Kaleidoscope.
Lending Motion, Natural Opulence,
Peacefully Quiet. Ranges Slumber Tranquilly,
Undisturbed. Vibrant. Wheat Xylan Yellow.

Shetland Sheepdog Charlie jumped high in the air
Sheep he could handle, but this creature was unfair
As far as he knew it was an alien or a creature from far away
I was lucky to have my camera that day
I wish now I had put it on video, for it was a hilarious sight
Charlie ran off and hid, almost into the night
The mouse had been scared too, but he was braver now
He scuttled in the barn and hid under the cow
My children were going to call Charlie names like Scaredy Cat
I told them this would hurt him, so please don’t do that
One of them wanted to keep the mouse in his room.
I scooted the creature out of the barn with a broom.

Tavish Macbain had a funeral pyre that amazed most of Shetland Isle
You could see the burial ship burning for a solid Viking mile.
His days of valor were behind him, he had shown the enemy a good fight.
We watched with awe as his ghost ship flashed into the August night.
His relatives had been Picts, tattooed with interesting items indeed.
they spoke the ancient Celtic language and knew how to ride a steed.
Tavish Macbain will be welcomed with open arms in Valhalla for sure.
His fighting prowess was amazing, and his ideals were spiritually pure.

Who never ate anything but baloney
He soon came to find
He could no longer climb
Up onto his Shetland pony

If those who brought from the East black gold
had listened to the forecast,
they’d have set a different course and saved
the innocent from slaughter.
But no! Shepherds on Shetland pastures
were summoned not by angels,
but by choking, crude coating of flocks
to rescue; while others mourned
defiled purity, lost innocence, wrecked.
Where is our Saviour from short cut slaughter,
from competition and commerce worship?
Can compensation insure or restore?
Does not the Light shine in black storm chaos
that confoundered the Braer, yet has power
to return from flight a New Creator?

A speck drifts in the wind blown hither and tither,
Briefly settling then takes to the air once more.
Now a charged particle thanks to the storm,
It flitters around like a beautiful butterfly.
Travelling the world at the whim of winds
visiting Australia, Asia and Africa on its way.
The frozen plains of Europe weigh it down
As it mixes with ice that freezes it hard.
Drifting aimlessly northwards, it, then
picks up the gulf stream still heading north.
Finally over the Shetland Isles it comes
to rest, Oh the tales that it could tell us.
Now it adds richness to the thin soil
here spring plants will take a grip
and burst into wondrous blooms
all due to a small mote of dust.

I woke my daughter up this morning
She sat up and I said, "Good morning, sugar."
She looked at me and said, "A monkey's uncle."
What's that kid dreaming about, anyway?
Our dishwasher went out
So I told my wife she would just have to wash by hand from now on
She said, "That's fine. You can use your hand from now on, too."
So I bought a new dishwasher
My dog, Zayla, got into a fight with a Shetland pony
And lost horribly
The pony stomped one of Zayla's toenails off
So I tied a hawk feather to her collar
And have been calling her Zayla Three Toes
I named the Shetland pony, Dances With Hooves.
I told my wife I was going to strip down, put on a loin cloth,
and attempt to ride Dances With Hooves
She said, "But what if the neighbors see you?"
I thought about this
And replied, "Then maybe they'll start keeping that darn Shetland pony penned up."

Skyline of rowed houses
Rolls past and
So do the greys of labour,
Conservative and otherwise
Are boarded on the decks of
Oil tankers; hollow
Hulking HMS something
Sleeps in the docks
Of the town once red
Now muddy brown
And sick,
Labour wise and
Reading Caledonia.

When i close my eyes
To follow Scotland's coast
I am so undecided
To which part i love the most
From the Shetland Isles
To the Borders so green
These vistas of miles
Really have to be seen
The Isle of Arran
And the Island of Mull
To the Minch of Lewis
I fly with the seagulls
When you go inland
Crystal waters run through the glens
Have seen the rise and fall
Of many, many men
As you walk round our cities
In history so steep
The tales of the past
Would make a grown man weep
Every so often
As i close my eyes
I soar with the eagle
Through our Scottish skies
