“Eat chocolate, be happy. It’s less a suggestion, more a dare.
Try to frown with fudge smeared lips. You simply can't. Pinky swear!”
“Guilt? Maybe later. Right now, there's only chocolate,
and the profound understanding that sometimes, the answer is simply…
….more chocolate.
Twenty-five years
since we agreed to this and still,
I vow to be there,
just outside your line of sight,
as you confidently mispronounce quinoa,
as you decide, again, that the best way
to check if the pan is hot
is to touch it.
I vow to say nothing
as you eyeball the rice-to-water ratio,
as you insist the foundation holds weight,
as you press snooze believing
time is different for you.
I vow to remain clogged-drain quiet
as you tell the plumber,
No, I got it.
As you grab the Tupperware
stamped Do Not Microwave.
I vow to never stop you,
never correct you,
never intervene—
just smile softly,
like god’s understudy
only to exist,
always,
just beyond your reach,
a presence, a history, a silent witness
to your worst ideas,
like a Liberty half-dollar trapped in a garbage disposal,
like a key locking the door from the outside.

And I was not excited in the least
I tried the kale and beets; they weren't for me

I knew you got frustrated as I smirked
You might think to yourself "Is he for me?"
I knew I'd have to try again for you
The next time we made lunch I took the lead
The jar of sandwich spread that I revealed
It made you smile and look me in the eye
The mayo-nnaise was made with olive oil
Less calories and saturated fat
We spread it on the bread from multi-grains
I said the special words; you knew I cared
"...with Olive oil". You said, "I love you too."
The greatest lunch I've ever known
Consists of just an ice cream cone.
The flavor may be stuffed with chips
To form a dam against the drips...
Or else have nuts to add some crunch
And justify it as a lunch;
But even choices smooth and creamy
Make a mid-day meal that's dreamy.
Health food folk won't understand
And might resort to reprimand,
Reciting every benefit
That quinoa has to keep one fit.
But keep your salads and your grains.
This is one chick who still refrains
From lunches served within a bowl;
Each lick a smile remains my goal!

Dolloped desire dropped in
