Night Tastes Like
Night tastes like:
Hot, black coffee
freshly perked.
Dark pumpernickel bread
fresh out of the oven.
Sweet black licorice
stringy kind of course.
A thick slice of
Mississippi mud pie.
A piece of dark chocolate
slightly bitter.
Dark bottom shoefly pie
made with black strap molasses.
The sense of taste can
heighten our sense of
imagination.
*shoefly pie is Pennsylvania Dutch type of pie made with molasses*

let
your mind
be free
with
the
scent of
gingerbread,
pumpernickel,
nutmeg,
banana bread,
spring rain,
vanilla extract
and
sweetgrass
to be exact
is the
scent of the moon
at last
I
am sure
then
let your
mind be free

She was a rather bland woman
Dowdy, dressed in tans and browns
She did not share any history
I did not know any of her towns
She brought pumpernickel bread to work
And shared it with me, along with butter.
I did not care if she did not speak anymore.
It was fabulous with dollops of peanut butter.

Hooray! Hooray! It’s Bagel Day!
Or so I’ve heard it said,
So substitute a bagel
For some ordinary bread.
Since many so-called “bagels”
Don’t have what it really takes
To be authentic, you may find
You’ve scarfed down lots of fakes.
Do not be fooled by circled dough
Around a center hole.
They must be dense and chewy
Like New York ones – that’s the goal.
Now other places have their fans,
(Hats off to Montreal!)
But some who serve a puffed-up version
Have a lot of gall.
To me, some seeds are needed -
Poppy, sesame and, too,
In pumpernickel, caraway,
And more than just a few.
A bagel’s a delicious treat
So eat it your own way,
But I need no reminding,
For I eat one every day!

Dress up this tasty circular bread
with cream cheese, lox, or veggie spread.
A pumpernickel choice with marmalade jelly, just cried out to my empty belly.
There are too many people in this waiting line!
I arrived at 7:00 and it's quarter past 9:00!
I call out with a soft french shout,
"Quel est le problem?"
What's the wait all about?
"Le beignet......" "S'il vous plait." My bagel please, today!
Crunchy grapes, fragrant brie, so many toppings, too many to see.
These warm fine spreads will soon decorate my plate.
I would save some for you, but I just can’t wait.
My morning coffee just cried out , "Where is my companion? I might pass out"
Can you guess the treat of which I speak?
It’s a favorite of many, but not unique.
Round as a penny, near the size of your hand,
it’s MY savory BAGEL and just plain grand!
Bon appetit !

Pumpernickel and a pickle,
My favorite with a slather of mayo lathered on.
Often my friends say,"begone,
We don't like Pumpernickel and a pickle with mayo slathered on"!
I just smile and munch away.
More pumpernickel, pickles, and mayo for me today!

The sign read, "Just a nickel
for every party pickle
to buy some pumpernickel."
The wait in line did trickle.
For tasty party nibble-
place bread upon the griddle.
For sure, they did not quibble-
was their fun time to giggle!
"Come one and all, don't twiddle
let's eat, dance by the fiddle
played to a funny riddle-
and swing to pickle-wriggle!"
Now, that was worth a nickel
for every party pickle!
Food choice was firm, not fickle-
enjoyed the pumpernickel!

When I was old enough, my mom
Would send me to the store,
Specifically, the bakery,
For treats I did adore.
But first, I had to ask them for
A rye bread they would slice,
With seeds, of course, or else
A pumpernickel would suffice.
And then some Linzer tarts for her,
Those filled with berry jam;
Then finally, the cakes
That made me happy as a clam.
Their name was Charlotte Russe,
A sponge cake in a cardboard sleeve,
With whipped cream and a cherry –
Just too perfect to believe!
They put them in a cardboard box
For me and my two bros
And tied it with a red-striped string,
As all of Brooklyn knows.
Today I wouldn’t like them –
Linzer tarts have more appeal –
But with a Charlotte Russe, back then,
How happy I would feel!

Freshly baked warm spinach bread
all nutrient packed
and sliced up thick for grilled cheese;
a tasty delight
for those colder nights
oozy cheese,
yum!
Tasty pumpernickel bread,
tuna salad spread;
mustard, mayo, pickle too;
chases away blues
awakens palate
ready lunch,
good!
Potato bread croutons in
a nice green salad,
blue cheese dressing poured upon;
garden fresh onions,
sliced up bell peppers,
fit for kings,
ooh!
Sour dough’s scent fills my kitchen
joyous aroma;
egg salad spread piled between
two slices, oh my.
for dessert some pie
tasty lunch,
Fine!

I don't think I'm too fickle;
it should be kind of brickle-
without a nasty prickle
and just a bit of trickle.
My fancy, it should tickle;
goes well with pumpernickel.
If you can guess- earn nickel!
Believe me, I won't stickle-
my favored snack's a pickle!

Sometimes I seem to muddle through* somehow
but English "muddle" cannot outline
a Russian sin split in two parts, a dao
divided into yin and yang, a whine
of lonely hummer in the lack of sickle,
a German bread without pumpernickel,
"Timon of Athens" in a glossy mag,
enamoured Jupiter away from Io,
the old good Middle West without Ohio,
a suddenly inflated airbag.
The Russian language differs. I stay steadfast
to split my sins - an alcohol abuse,
a sloth, a pride as well as bed and breakfast
in half with you, my English-Russian muse.
* (rus.) to do smth with a sin in half.

Proud pirate flag, peacock, pumpernickel pie,
Perfumed prairie pinwheels, paper two-ply.
Happy hanging homebody having healthy hi.
Heaving hitting heartfelt Harry hopping high.
Ballooning blissful blossoms beaconing blue Babe,
Luxurious lumberjack licking lemonade.
Merry mashing marshmallows mysteriously made.
Fine frolicking French frankfurters fearful and afraid.
It is fun to throw some alliteration into a poem like this.
My brain is laughing at the silliness, it’s like a gentle kiss.
So when you think I have no more ideas, I am simply out.
Make a list of P words, or K words, and give a little shout.
Your ready muse will be happy that you are writing anything down.
It might not make any sense at first, but it will stop a little frown.
The thing is to keep the pen moving or the fingers across the keys.
Your muse so excited, when you make cute little poems like these.

I pity those who can’t eat bread
But opt for gluten-free instead
For sourdough with hardened crust
And slathered butter is a must.
A bagel topped with lots of seeds
Is all a body really needs
Or onion rolls that softly squish
To complement most any dish.
A loaf of rye with caraway
Or garlic knots can make my day
And pumpernickel, deeply brown,
Has never ever let me down.
A fresh-baked challah, ripped apart,
Then dipped in sauce – be still, my heart!
Focaccia’s another treat
That must be sad to never eat.
I could go on and on, you know,
Expounding on the joys of dough.
For me, the truth is absolute –
There really is no substitute!
