Bodega cat crept to the curb
And crouched down by a car,
His ins and outs encouraged
By a door that’s left ajar.
He stared intently underneath
The chassis, but to me,
There was no mouse or bird
Or other creature I could see.
I thought I’d stick around to watch,
In case he found some prey,
But realized if I saw him pounce,
It might just spoil my day.
So I continued on and left him
To complete his stalk,
While I did what I always do
And finished up my walk.

My name is Yù míng
Jade brightness is what it means
I’m a Praying Mantis and we look like string beans
I jump about the grass to chew up flowers, leaves
and stems of plants between the trees
It’s only these I eat, on insects I will pass
I never tire of living in the grass
Twigs and leaves I’ll rest up on in my new Eden
Of all the paths I came up on I choose your lovely garden
An evening serenade, a blusterous chirping song
My wings are light and striking as I glide along
Today I move on, but still the same regime
I'll creep between the grass blades gently and so feminine
I do the Praying Mantis pose it comes naturally
It’s a yoga stance, and they named it after me!

Detached from my consciousness,
the monster attacked
Feasting first on my memory,
the front then the back
Now living inside me,
all day turns to night
Connection—rejection,
devouring the light

Remember when time was new?
An early day, a long night too!
Remember when you once knew a child who put up a fight with you?
A child who saw the fading light in you. A star so bright you both once knew.
Perhaps you live a lie deep in the mind of you?
Perhaps you didn’t see it die in the soul of you?
The child who’s mind was a sky of blue, who’s dreams were fields of pastures new.
You saw him run away from you. He stayed in the light of day while the preying night found you. You scoffed at all the dreams he’d had. You drank away the steel his eyes once had.
You let go of your dreams you fool and now look what’s become of you?

the ravens rest upon the graven cross,
for it is time to guard death with their wings-
they prey on souls who endure love and loss,
as a demon weeps and an angel sings;
barren branches wither to ash and bone…
one ebon raven longs to perch alone
I chose #2 (black ravens on a cross in a graveyard)

I'm like a SEAL team commando
After several cups of espresso
I like to dive bomb
With great aplomb
A gyrfalcon? I think so
To poach me is illegal
My name evokes the regal
I reach astonishing speed
When I'm ready to feed
You can call me a golden eagle

The Preying Praying Mantis
She folds her limbs and waits
quietly.
He comes near, she waits
silently.
They do the dance,
Then comes her chance.
And snap!
Off with his head
quickly!

Northern style with whirling a momentum kept
Southern style quicker and hidden short n sharp
Ref.Kung-fu styles
The Southern style was not based on Mantis movements at all.
But called such to confuse the Qing government –it was actually Chow Gar.
I bet that’s bored you all a little !
Carry on with your burgers !

Preying mantis prays,
“Thank you God for meat to eat.”
licking raptor legs.
I Missed Carolyn's Contest, but here's a Preying Mantis haiku anyway. I love preying mantis. They are a
gardener's helper since they eat insects. And they are such fun to photograph. Did you see the picture in my
book, "100 Poems for Life"?

Eagles doth float on thermal rise,
Nary a flap, remaining high,
Then one fell swoop, with no loud cries,
To a prey, diving sharply nigh
With preying talons,
Be rats or pythons.
Sharks doth circle on hapless seals,
The lost or young or badly maimed,
Serrated teeth lethally kills,
With jaws since ancient times untamed
The sea’s true hunters,
Bloodying waters.
Lions prowl with sure footed stealth,
Camouflaged amidst dry bushes,
Against the background they then melt,
Attacks are quick, sudden rushes.
Deadly when they hide,
Royal in their pride.
Wolves criss cross creating eddies,
The chase arduous and oh so long,
Baying on weak, weary bodies,
Each one doth make, the pack strong.
The triumph they share,
Be it moose or hare.
