I am acetylcholine
I am self-aware
I am norepinephrine
I am energy
I am serotonin
I am emotion
I am GABA
I am pain
I am dopamine
I am pleasure
I am an ancestral soup
Of neurochemical harmony
My steps are predetermined
There are no choices
There is no truth
Faith is superfluous
Hope is an illusion
Love is obviated

St. Duloxetine, thee we beseech
Our chemical plaster to fill the breach
Between raw emotions and hard reality
Our primal instincts and plastic society
Give to your supplicants a brightened scene
With norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine
So traffic jams hum not so loud
Mindless tasks morph to puffy clouds
Pastel pinks from glowing reds
Dark clouds lighten over our heads
Ease the wear of countless miles
Flatten our frowns, deepen our smiles
Relieve of us of our myriad obsessions
Lengthen our spousal bonding sessions
Allow us to be more like our Savior
Free from socially unproductive behavior
No clay-colored stools or gastrointestinal pain,
Just another day without psychic rain
And of burning questions in our heads
How gently you put them to bed
And should we cry as it all flies by
Sing our weary souls a lullaby

I saw alchemy love gods in the hierarchy,
Testosterone that regulates sexual desire.
Phenyl ethylamine makes a person catchy,
Its effect is time-bound but not entire.
A love interest is signaled by Dopamine,
Your attention on the person is alright.
Your blood is set racing by Norepinephrine,
And prompts you for action ‘fight or flight’.
The control of moods goes with Serotonin,
And violent behavior is almost set light.
Released at the moment of ****** Oxytocin,
Influences bonding between the two alright.
Suddenly awoke, many gods and paths that wind
If you don’t mind call me in case more you find.

Everyone says the government will be the first to develop mind control, (or that they already have) but it seems as if a species of fire ant (Solenopsis geminate) has beaten them to it. Entomologist Anastasia McKay noticed that animals tended to avoid Solenopsis geminate nests; this made her wonder, what causes the animals to stay away? After studying the chemical releases of the ants she found that they continuously release small amounts of epinephrine and norepinephrine; the chemicals that create a fight or flight response often known as fear in most animals’ brains, including ours. When the animal’s brain registers the chemicals they will veer away from their path, causing them to completely avoid the fire ants’ nest. “This form of natural protection is ingenious and unheard of.” McKay says. So, the next time you feel an unnatural fear you know that either the government has finally developed mind control, or you have come across a Solenopsis geminate nest.

Espresso and billows of cigarette smoke
start your life each day, to underwrite and
elevate the squeaky neurosis you display.
Freud and Prozac and Xanax keep you level
but flat, add 60 milligrams of amphetamines
to get your motivation back.
Some say its “creative style” while others say
“you’re very ill” as civilized, certified doctors
proclaim: “swallow every pill!” No more
“Carpe Diem” nor “beckoning to swim out
further,” celebrate you right to cope,
with therapeutic fervor.
Your fading friends alas, contend: “your
brain is now asleep!” Just tweak your dose
and animated you will arise and leap! Skies
ginger with days ablaze cobalt space,
your ability to marvel struggles in
a foggy and muddled place.
Synapses firing, “Control!” my mind has ordered
Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors…dreams
Carl Jung has ordered. Dopamine, Zoloft or
Ambien, competition to attend, the
imagined dangers that never
really end.
