Many starry nights I lay
in my wooden cabin next to your 
sanctuary waiting for whisperings
from your past, wisdom words

I wrote odes about a nurturing 
grey wrinkled body smelling of hay
overripe fruit 
transferring images about your life
into quilts in dead of blue nights
your babes

Willy a Wooly Mammoth

Willy, a wild mammoth lives in my yard
Shedding head all over in clumps
Neighbors come by and collect it in bales
Making comforters, pillows and plush cushions
They bring casseroles, carrots, croissants and canapes
Willy has the best life, and he knows it
Milking it for all it is worth

Kentucky boasts about her Mammoth Cave
People exploring it are quite brave
Four hundred miles
Giving them trials
Exploring her passages is a fave.

Mammoth Drift

Taken sideways, swept as a web strung spider
Sand sugar legged staggered specimen lured by weightless
            Drifters soon to be lifted by unruly tide's violent 
Fears ditched for the squall enthrall of ocean fizzed caress

          

M Is For Mammoth

M is for mammoth, big as a barn,
with long woolly hair that's much warmer than yarn.
He's 15 feet tall from his toes to his head,
(much too big to keep in the gardening shed)
He's got really big tusks and he weighs 13 ton,
and he stomps on saber tooth tigers for fun.
He wandered the plains munching bushes

Trapper Dan's Mammoth, Part Iii

Dan found himself between
the angry mammoth and the cliff.
He had no choice but to retreat,
though the fall his flesh would rip.

Then about six feet down he saw,
a tree growing out of the wall,
at a slanting angle he could catch,
so Trapper Dan let himself fall.

He snagged the trunk and hung,
his legs dangling free in space.
