Premium Member Ragnarok: the Storm

With the end of days upon them
Nears the time of final battle
In the halls of high Valhalla
Asgard senses its death rattle

In the forest crows the rooster
In the sky the sun does darken
In the cave the hound is howling
To these signs the Aesir harken

Heimdall blows the Gjallarhorn
Dark the rainbow bridge is turning
Vivid lightning cleaves Yggdrasil
Then the central tree is burning

Aesir watch in fascination
See volcanoes spew like fountains
See the heavens splitting open
See the oceans climb the mountains

See the continents convulsing
See the forests burn to ashes
See the sons of Mim awaken
In the fatal lightning flashes

As the winds consume the wasteland
From the south Surtr advances
With his minions tearing corpses
Bright his sword and sharp his lances

Aesir then prepare their weapons
Eyes are clear and arms are steady
The Midgard serpent Jörmungandr
Upon the battle plain is ready

With his heavy hammer Mjolnir
Strides the mighty god of thunder
To do battle with the serpent
And to rend the world asunder

N.B. This poem is an Epyllion, a brief narrative poem with a romantic or mythological theme. It is written in trochaic tetrameter, like some of the ancient Eddas.

Valhalla - Vikings' Paradise : Mythology

In Asgard, kingdom of the mighty God Odin
A place awaits all battle fallen warrior heroes
It's in Valhalla where there is endless feasting
And an ending of all griefs and sorrows

The Valkyries, Odin's warrior daughters
Carry the fallen heroes from the battlefield
To Valhalla to join other fallen warriors
Where they are restored to life fully healed

Each day the warriors fight on Asgard's plain
Their battle skills to sharpen and maintain
Every evening wounds and injuries they sustain
Are healed and each warrior made whole again

They dine on liquor and fresh cooked meat
That is always in great abundance for all
Providing a delicious gourmet treat
At Odin's banquet in Valhalla's dining hall

Addition:
Here is the poem which aroused my childhood interest in the Vikings, and to
which I referred in my reply to Shadow. I would like to share it with others.
It is "The Sea King's Burial" by Charles Mackay. It recalls the days when a
Viking chief died and his body was placed in a boat. The vessel with full sail
set and a fire lighted, was then sent drifting out to sea. It is a long poem so I
am only quoting the first and last verses:

My strength is failing fast
(Said the sea-king to his men).
I shall never sail the seas
   Like a conqueror again,
But while yet a drop remains
Of the life-blood in my veins
Raise, oh, raise me from my bed,
Put the crown upon my head,
Put my good sword in my hand,
And so lead me to the strand,
Where my ship at anchor rides
      Steadily;
If I cannot end my life
In the crimsoned battle-strife
Let me die as I have lived,
      On the sea.

.......................................

Once alone a cry arose,
Half of anguish, half of pride,
As he sprang upon his feet,
With the flames on every side.
"I am coming! " said the king,
Where the swords and bucklers ring,
Where the warrior lives again,
Where the souls of mighty men
And the weary find repose,
And the red wine ever flows,
   I am coming, great -All-Father,
      Unto thee!
Unto Odin, unto Thor,
And the strong, true hearts of yore:
   I am coming to Valhalla
      O'er the sea."

Bad Breeding

the list that was a fist
a) it is possible
b) it is inevitable
chained to a million pleasures
an astonishing compendium of compulsions
honed bright with a fool's ardor
the kind you'd wish for in a movie script
undulating at the tar pits of amor
the land rich with autographs
bruised and humiliated reciting the alphabet
backwards on the curb with Officer *****
a limited perspective but not without its ironies
blazing trails to metabolic equilibrium
using every crutch and cane there is
to seek out and embrace ignorance
in a fanciful play of medieval shadows
colliding with the grace of mosh pit elbows
and that pretty much nails it
the rest is a problem of amplification
if looking can blind you I'm blind
he seems to have a button gone missing
ripe to the skies with the stink of deduction
hell was upon us and none grieved
in statistically relevant numbers
apparently they had finally reached
the bottom of the barrel
we still wage war upon feudalism
good advice for any century or cemetery
touch something holy once in a while
and mighty Thor will wing above
ah sure right uh huh you bet
needing humor the wires tried to sing
the blades of the switch bit the anode
all is broadcast everywhere right now
on all the boogie woogie coordinates
how's that for karmic indifference
some curse some utter gratitude
may the good fairy console you
and turn the illusion of warmth
up a little higher
since it hasn't yet been made a crime
to destroy your own mind
until the foundations of the world
thunder and come apart like cooked meat
but working on the problem
is better than nothing
even if you really don't know
all that you think you know
even if hideously scarred in battle
a terra cotta bust hot from the oven
smelling of sulfur and bruises
tempted by radiance and music and poetry
which could get you jailed tonight
so pretend you have wide angle vision
under a curse with an escape clause
in varying pedantic proportions
for another illegal exit
from Average and its Law
played to hI fives all around
kindling fires of rebellion
the Metaphor League saw to it

In awe, I welcome Thor with utmost glee.
The powerful celestial force set free
amongst the hills and over the coarse scree.
The winds that whip and slink — the hailstones loudly clink.
Flashes segue to link — I quell the urge to blink.
My pulse quickens at the rank petrichor.
I ignore being drenched, making my soul soar,
I turn my face to the rain to taste more.
The storm will not abate — it’ll make me very late
for meeting that’ll seal fate — my destiny won't wait.
Our tempers complimenting to a T,
and search for impressive clichés in sync.
Remembering that which had gone before,
I’m quite blasé about the hot debate.

This poem was included in the 11-poem anthology dealing with hailstones, in the online publication Pick Me Up Poetry, March 2022:

Jaws was once a frightening sight… Now Sharknados have hit the land!
And Dragon can’t wait to participate… To him it’s sushi on demand!
Lately, he’s become a bit put off, cause none have ever come near him.
But he won’t give up, cause we’re in tornado alley, don’t you know! Amen!

I almost had him believing me… That it’s a MOVIE and doesn’t, really exist.
Then, you know, a second one hit New York, now he’s really, totally, convinced!
He wants to be a Super hero, by stir-frying sharks, while they’re still up in the air.
He says, if Dragons are in movies and he exists, then, so do they… somewhere!

I can’t argue his logic, since his line-dancing penguins, are so hard, to explain.
I blocked the Sci Fi and movie channels. What else could I do? And that’s a shame!
He won’t give up on Sharknados! He’s ready, now! Yep! He really, hasn’t got a clue!
Tho I thought he was a tad bit gullible, even for a two-year-old Dragon… it’s true!

But Grandpa Troll says Dragons are all like THAT, for the first few thousand years.
He saw ‘Dragon Heart’, on TV and thinks he’ll go to Drago when he dies. Oh Dear!
So I finally, out foxed Dragon, by telling him ‘Poseidon has reigned in his sharks…’
Unfortunately, our Sunday School Teacher, and Preacher were tsk’ing at that part.

I know! I could’ve explained it better, but he also believes in Thor! I just can’t win!
He watched that movie, too! And yes! He swears all lightening comes from him!
He couldn’t wait to meet Thor so flew off, in a lightening storm. Yep! Off he flew!
All because he wanted a turn to play with Thors’ trusty hammer…Mjolnir! It’s true!

Tho Dragons are tough, he got struck, and his pride and top notch were badly singed.
Now he’s mad, at the meany, Thor and says he WON’T EVER play with him, again!
But never fear… I am here, and won’t ever give up, on this, my never-ending quest.
Still Super Heroes have taught Dragon of truth, justice, the American way and trust.

At least, he doesn’t believe in Zeus, but it’s likely, because he’s not a Super Hero Star.
One by one, I’ll fix them all, before I’m driven to that squirrel nest, amongst the stars!

Deeper and Deeper

Deeper and deeper We go,
inside hell,
While shouting paradise is for the rich
So we hope, so we smoke dope
Deeper and deeper we go
The abyss, the hell I had to come out of
To my dark complexion that I'm sentenced for life in,
Cops and crooks,
Cats and rats so don't snitch!
Mouths sealed and bottoms up
That's straight to the rear end,
A watchtower and a lighthouse
Curse it, dogs are watching again!

Deeper and deeper we go
Hell for the mind,
so i took hallucinations to gamma radiations,
Feeling The effects and having lucid dreams,
altered perception and seeing myself as hulk
High levels of toxins and perceiving my friends as The avengers,
Mumbling to myself that we'll avenge the wrong doings done to mankind,
My brother snapped! and told me to stop with the childish fantasies,
Like the high was over
 that's when Thor answered
“like who invited you to the helicarrier”
so we continued,

Deeper and deeper we go
The abyss, the hell for my people
So they gave the keys to my equal
Strange!.....
So he betrayed the clan
To join the kings of the land
Damn that rat!.....
A red dot on the forehead
I ain't the devil so don't you dare!
But I'll be rebelling and not ruling
Well that's what you get for fighting for humanity,
a big sign that states Reality Check,
so curse it!
Drawing circles and inverted crosses
So they call me a satanic,
cause im drawing shapes on the ground and scrambles on walls,
Strange........
This is the call of the kid,
The son of man so there's screaming and worshiping,
we all feeling the spirit.

deeper and deeper we go
We in hell,
Streets and pavements
Tied up, watch out for the cross roads,
That four way leading to the great work
So we walked, chased by dogs,
Curse those hounds but thanks to the man for his kindness,
Loren whispered "what about her?
I replied oh yeah and Marvin grabbed tons of antibiotics,
I guess he had bacterial infection
So I jumped out the window
To escape through the c section,
But i made sure to document all the facts
To adding emphasis so y'all be interested
Thank you all mates.

Kaos In -Part 2-

Humorous Humors and tumorous assumers and crazy-fascinated consumers spend their money with wings on luxuries of the heart, going topsy-turvy over pleasures and expensive firs
Throw away past pleasures beyond blessing-cursing measures - nothing lasts like future pasts..nothing matters, so don't bother to be the opposite of abstract abyss blurs

You're outta luck
Better luck next time
For trying real hard, here's a buck
Shucks, you're real nice and our irrelevant relationship is super sublime and quite crime

Calm down...faith weighs a pound and hopeless is field-of-avarice-grown
Don't wear a frown
Hyper much? What's for lunch?
Love me a bunch? Here's a punch...
Drink up the blud of defeat
It's from my heart to yours
Let your hands fall to your feet...
Perfect feats and epic, RAD beats got me rocking on my car seat with a seatbelt of course

Threatened like Thor with a hammer...
Attacked a predator of evil endeavors
I'm not antman or any man at that lever
Captain America and Batman saved me and like catman, oh do I let out my thankurrs (thank you purrs)

Stand tall
Crack open the backtracked lies
Don't fall
Or you'll lose it all in farewell's, goodbye's
Boy, how time flies
Girl, you're my seasoned fries
Give it your all tries
Try to make out self-controlled replies

Patience is a peaceful, virtuous vibe I get from you
I getcha loud and clear, misses and misters
You're a disaster in disguise of a dream come true
Fetch me, ah, your scars that turn to embarrassing blisters...shocking to the sight...like hustlers, trying to be like preachers...practice what you preach, gold diggers
We are on the same bus
So don't fuss and cuss...
Unless I say so or He says so, which is hardly ever
Go wherever you wind flows and blows...a mighty blur and I blurt out His Word that heal and my words that injure like gossip murmurs

Sit down
With your grace gown
Disgrace clown...
Mind-blown...got owned - home-bound with a sound of we-are-outta-town

Zero in
Infinity out
Peace out
Kaos in
I liv to luv
I die to h8
I liv to expresssss
I die to impressss

Song of My Love

The song of my love is heard
It travels over Seas and mountains
Bearing cadences that make the fishes dance
It frolics over hills and oceans
With rhythms that adorn the eyes of the sun
Sniffing the scented air that enflames the smouldering harmattan ash
Dancing with the guileless glee of a soul at ease

My love wakes
Glowing with the shimmers of sunrise
As it emerges with the pleasure of a shy bride
Rising in slow degrees from the east coast of India
Glimmering as the mirror of the stream flows with easy glide
Shining like the smiles of the unbridled sun as it beams with pride
Gliding with lazy grandeur like the procession of a Royal entourage

My love breathes
It inhales the sharp scent of burning wood
And savours the sweet smell of the lilacs that bloom
The breath of my love gives life to hyacinths
Shrunken and withered and makes them blossom anew
It is warm like the caress of wool on a night of chilly cuddle
It's journey down the spine generates shudders of flurry relish

My love sees
It stares with eyes that sparkle
Like the flash of lightening on a sultry night
Piercing the flesh as it comes in contact with the soul
The eyes of my love are sharp
Swifter than the swoop of an eagle on a chick guarded by the hen
It is strong like the hammer of Thor
And it makes mountains crash like an avalanche
It is hotter than the smite of the sun at its peak
And it melts the heart frozen like ice

My love grows
It feeds on smiles that clouds tears
Subsumed by the tapestry of the sun's golden gaze
It thrives on the rhapsody of gleesome hearts
Dancing as they laugh in unrestricted boisterousness

My love is a story
Told on nights of twilight beauty
As lasses blush before flames that smolder
And lads boast of valiant feats unachieved
It is that song sang as the arms of the wind spread over herbages
Clothing them with perfumes that issue from dancing hibiscuses
It is the hidden hymn of covenant
Sang beneath the lustrous peek of sleeping stars
When the transient sneer of the sun hide behind the moon's smile

A Sestina You Would Harley Notice

Paul C. Burk

A Sestina you would Harley notice.

No mere mortal will ever ride a Hog
that shines and gleams in all its chrome
and paint. It’s a steed to search for one’s spirit,
a quest one hopes will never come to an end,
forcing one to ride an endless journey clad in leather
and boots. All this. one’s armor, makes one feel like a god.

The power I control is that of a god
because it feels unlimited upon this Hog.
I learn to love the feel of the beautiful black leather
and the way it looks on me in contrast to the chrome
of the beast that could easily end
my existence and destroy my spirit.

A Harley-Davidson is the best way I set my spirit
free. They call me Thor, the god
of Thunder, for I control all that I see and all this end-
less power stems from one source, this fantastic Hog.
All strength and fury are reflected in my chrome
heart as well as my mighty hands wrapped in leather.

Deep within this man, beneath studded leather,
is a powerful force, a relentless spirit
that shines free, as much as the sun reflecting off the chrome
exhaust pipes, which call out, as does this god
a force to be reckoned with a man and his Hog.
If you cross one, you cross both, which will be your end.

The iron horse is my true friend.
Tougher than an army grunt or any leather-
neck marine. It’s a vicious machine, the awesome Hog.
Within this beast lies a relentless spirit
that needs to be controlled, and controlled by a god.
We need each other; our joy is glimmering chrome.

The man and the beast like paint and chrome
forever together riding always until the end
when one day I will be called to answer the gods
wearing my boots and clad in my best leather.
I will answer them truthfully with a strong spirit
that I share as one with the mighty Hog.

There is nothing finer on a Hog than bright beautiful chrome
which reflects a spirit whose power will never end
and is as strong as leather and as omnipotent as a god.

The Seals of Ragnarok, Part Ii

Odin looked confused, and Thor did too,
But none of us bothered to wait
Ten thousands years of warrior souls,
Charged the dark foe right out of the gate.
My boys they shot out Fenris’s eyes,
And the old 7th cav, they rode in
Slashing hard with drawn, curving sabers,
They cut off the monster’s four shins.

The wolf he roared, and his great mouth flared
Blood-read teeth set in wide-open jaws…
But a slew of TOW missiles leapt from the lines
And streaked into the beast’s gaping maw.
The wolf he collapsed, trailing gray smoke,
But Fenris’s life had yet to be spent
So the samurai charged, long katanas drawn
And his flesh they chopped up and rent.

Up came Jorumgandre, the world serpent
Expecting a loud chorus of screams.
Instead he went up in a fiery rage,
Bombed by a hundred B-17s.
A breaching charge set against his flank,
Tore a great, gaping hole in his side
And the Boys of Dunkirk rushed in headlong,
Shooting up his guts ‘till he died.

Then Surtr drew near, his big sword aflame
Ready to bash, to burn, to lay waist
But along came the treads of Patton’s brigades,
And shelled his ankles to make them break.
Surtr fell back and was lost to a swarm
Of plaid Highlanders dense, in a charge.
And when they sheathed swords, all that remained
Was a corpse, quite unusually large!

Finally came dread Loki, marching along
At his back the great host of Muspell.
But from the rear came Puller and US marines,
And to that dark horde, they brought hell!
As they fought, the Berserkers, they charged
Norsemen delivering the last blow,
The horde crumbled quick, turning to flight.
Leave Loki standing alone in the snow.

He turned to run but I shot out his knee
And then dragged him to the gods in chains.
Thor just shrugged, and Mjolnir he swung
And dashed out the deceiver’s brains.
It was the only blow the gods did land,
Most were too stunned to lift an arm.
The Einherjar had slaughtered all before them,
Not a single god had come to harm!
