Premium Member Just Believe

I hear them singing,                                                      just believe~just believe.                                                Angels of all sizes were singing their hearts out,                the heavenly choir with words they did weave.

The beautiful music and singing,                                      just believe~just believe.                                                It is heard loud and very clear,                                        welcoming~comforting the angels did achieve.

As we stand at the pearly gates we hear,                          just believe~just believe.                                               We wait our turn to be happy and not grieve,                    do we get in or must we leave.

Wulf and Eadwacer

Wulf and Eadwacer
ancient Anglo-Saxon poem
loose translation by Michael R. Burch

My clan's curs pursue him like crippled game;
they'll rip him apart if he approaches their pack.
It is otherwise with us.

Wulf's on one island; we're on another.
His island's a fortress, fastened by fens. (fastened=secured)
Here, bloodthirsty curs howl for carnage.
They'll rip him apart if he approaches their pack.
It is otherwise with us.

My heart pursued Wulf like a panting hound,
but whenever it rained—how I wept!—
the boldest cur grasped me in his paws:
good feelings for him, but for me loathsome!

Wulf, O, my Wulf, my ache for you
has made me sick; your seldom-comings
have left me famished, deprived of real meat.

Have you heard, Eadwacer? Watchdog!
A wolf has borne our wretched whelp to the woods!
One can easily sever what never was one:
our song together.

Premium Member You Are My Sonshine

Inspired by Carrie Richard’s poem “Unlatched”

YOU ARE MY SONSHINE

Our song together,
just you and me

“You are my sunshine…”

Our song belongs,
only to us

And how I used to love
to pull you on my lap,
even catching
the last few times,
before you left
for college…

A son belongs
to his mom
for so short a time

Yet how wonderful
to see your success
in your job
with your wife
and kids

You are still my sunshine,
my only sunshine

a title belonging
to an only son
who used to call his mom
his princess
and heave his empty wallet
out of his pocket

“Get whatever you want, Mom”

Memories so strong
that hold open doors
for the one woman in his life
a lifetime ago
with a handsome bow
tied on a moonlight cradle

Now I cradle the phone to my ear
with bended heart
listening

to the grownup man...
Oh how proud I am.

Us Verse, After Auden

US Verse, after Auden
by Michael R. Burch

"Let the living creature lie,
Mortal, guilty, but to me
The entirely beautiful." - W. H. Auden

Verse has small value in our Unisphere,
nor is it fit for windy revelation.
It cannot legislate less taxing fears;
it cannot make us, several, a nation.
Enumerator of our sins and dreams,
it pens its cryptic numbers, and it sings,
a little quaintly, of the ways of love.
(It seems of little use for lesser things.)

Published by The Raintown Review, The Barefoot Muse and Poetry Life & Times

The Unisphere mentioned is a spherical stainless steel representation of the earth constructed for the 1964 New York World's Fair. It was commissioned to celebrate the beginning of the space age and dedicated to "Man's Achievements on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe." The lines quoted in the epigraph are from W. H. Auden's love poem "Lullaby." Keywords/Tags: Auden, unisphere, universe, together, lullaby, voice, verse, value, revelation, cryptic, legislate, enumerator, sin, sins, dreams, love, sing, sings, singing, quaint, quaintly, lesser, greater, mortality, beautiful, writing

Premium Member Spend Some Time With Me Collaboration With Sandra Weiss

This Lyric is written by Sandra Weiss and I have written and played the music for it.
We enjoyed bringing this song together.

Spend Some Time With Me

Feeling a bit lonely
Maybe feeling a bit blue
This is what I ask of you
What I need and it's free
Would you spend some time with me?

So much time spent alone
I'm always on my own
So if you have some time to spare
Nothing special just thoughts to share

Chorus:

It would make a difference
If you would be
Willing to spend
A little time with me
I'm not asking
For very much
Just to talk a while
I may have forgotten how to smile

I think a smile
It could happen again
If I can call on you
To be a friend
Would you spend some time with me?

I used to have much more
I could believe, felt secure
Things change, I ran away to hide
No-one remained by my side

Chorus:

It would make a difference
If you would be
Willing to spend
A little time with me
I'm not asking
For very much
Just to talk a while
I may have forgotten how to smile

Ending...

So you see, if you would only be
The person to spend time with me
Would you spend some time with me?
Repeat...Would you spend some time with me?

One of the Good Guys

Pop love song.

One of the good guys
By Michelle Morris
03/06/2023

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

You are the loveliest guy
A man who raises the bar higher
You always treat me right
And make my heart feel lighter

Your wonderful hugs and kisses
Your sweet words of encouragement
Wrap themselves around my soul
Like a great blanket in the winter

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

You are the loveliest guy
Our love gives our world meaning
You have the highest integrity
And make my soul feel free

Your wonderful love and light
Your soul path entwined with mine
We've met in every lifetime
Our love stands the test of time

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

One of the good guys
One of the good guys
One of the good guys
You'll always be
One of the good guys

They wait their turn,
Watching from the sidelines.

Cheerfully chattering, they speak,
Perhaps of weather.

Then suddenly they’re off!
Swooping down, they glide,

Wings extended in crucifix,
They brake. Alighting softly

Onto the pavement.
Here there are seeds scattered.

Tossed each day by a frail hand
From the porch above.

There is a bond here. An understanding.
Food for song.

Cheaper than cable TV,
At times more entertaining.

They finish now. They’ve had their fill.
They launch together,

Land together,
Watch and wait together,

From the bushes at the side
Of the pavement below the porch.

Tomorrow the hand will come again
To pay them for their song.

Sad News About Winged Warrior

Sad news about Winged Warrior

I just received word from the family of John Torchia, better known as Winged Warrior here on the soup, has passed away at the age of 61. He was fighting cancer and no one knew about it except for his family, and me. My last communication with John was about two months ago, he wanted to work on a Christian song together but he wasn't feeling well. He wanted me to let everyone on Poetry Soup know that he apologizes for not posting recently and not commenting as he normally does. I know he was beloved here for his deeply spiritual poetry, and his remarkable vocabulary, he truly loved writing and we all no doubt will miss him very much. I suspected something was wrong lately as he never responded to my phone messages or emails, it is with a heavy heart that I bear this sad news. RIP my friend....

Premium Member Song of the Troubadour

A troubadour came by my house;
beneath my window he did sing.
I had never heard such melody
or listened to like lyrics ring.
He sang a song I understood,
a song of love for me alone;
and , gazing through the latticed frame,
I knew that I would be his own.

The haunting strains, they wound their way,
even before I could resist,
my heart was bound by cords of love;
forever to his song I would list.
"I long to follow you." I cried,
"fair, wandering minstrel, gay and free;
I want to be your gypsy bride
and sing sweet songs of love with thee."

He bade me follow with a look--
a look my tongue cannot describe--
so tender that my heart leaped up.
"I will follow you! Oh, yes!" I cried.
And then I saw, just as I turned
to go with love forevermore,
what I had thought a laurel wreath
was but a crown of thorns he wore.

The robe which from his shoulders hung--
it had seemed spotless, white as snow;
but, then I saw it stained with blood.
yet, still with him I longed to go.
His feet and hands were bruised and torn;
"oh, who had wounded one so good!"
Just then I saw the lute he played
was but a rugged cross of wood.

"Oh, Love!" I cried, "dear, fairest one,
who dared to harm and hurt you so!"
and then I heard the song again...
"It was for you; did you not know?"
"For me? I do not understand;
for just today I heard your song."
He turned to speak what now I know.
"My love," he said, "I called you long."

We sing the song together now;
each day is but a new refrain.
Yet, still I marvel when I hear
a note of joy wrung out of pain.
I did not know when first I heard
his music calling to my heart
that love is not triumphant
till wounded, pierced and torn apart.

Let's Show Our Wings and Fly Together

An inspiring and uplifting song. May we each find our true tribe mates. And may we each find our wings... And fly!

Let's show our wings and fly together
By Michelle Morris
02/07/2023

There you are, sitting in one corner
Making a wallflower look sociable
Here I am, sitting in another corner
Looking around, wondering why I'm here

I catch your eye, and despite the sadness
There's a twinge of gladness
There's a relief that you're not alone
Yes, you're not alone in this moment

And between us, there is chemistry
And between us, there is energy
And between us, the light flows
And between us, the light grows

So, take my hand and let's get out of here
Let's show our wings and fly together
Smile and laugh and play up in the sky
Way up high between the stars
Is where we are
Together

Here we are now, sitting on a cloud
We can share our life stories and be proud
'Cos we made it through every day
Without a wing or a prayer, sometimes

Sometimes...
And yet we persevered
We had hope, we were brave
Throughout this long journey - life's journey

And between us, there is chemistry
And between us, there is energy
And between us, the light flows
And between us, the light grows

So, take my hand and let's live up here
Let's show our wings and fly together
Smile and laugh and play up in the sky
Way up high between the stars
Is where we are
Together

No more sitting in dark corners
No more hurt and betrayal as normal
No more sadness, loss of faith
Let's shine our brightness for the human race

And between us, there is chemistry
And between us, there is energy
And between us, the light flows
And between us, the light grows

So, take my hand and let's live up here
Let's show our wings and fly together
Smile and laugh and play up in the sky
Way up high between the stars
Is where we are
Together
