Clearing Ice

Mammoth cold this morning.
There’s been an ice-storm.
Stiff-meat meets chilled ribs,
I am creaking and walking
shovel in shrinking hand.

Robins pounce on frozen worms
Siberian tigers in a flying flurry;
if they stop for a moment
death and life falls over everywhere.

I work the wide-plastic spade
its red mouth scooping
a deep glacial gravity,
pausing only to sag
under the wind's frigid whips,

An old guy shoveling snow
can have heart failure,
better to go this way though
than sitting on the toilet.

Mammoths are now snow piles,
broken branches protrude like tusks.
I lean on my shovel,
watch the robins
shake off crystals of sky
from heat-hugging wings.

See how hectic they fly?
Some may fall by evening;
in this kind of freeze
death and life falls over
everywhere.

A Letter To Winter and Spring

Dear Winter and Spring,
Read this letter carefully.
It's very urgent.

Winter, we've suffered
From freezing our booties off,
Horrible snowstorms;

Shoveling outside,
Thirty mile-per-hour winds,
Falling on our butts;

Icy streets and slush,
Sidewalks covered with rock salt,
(Did I mention snow?)

And the worst part was:
Coughing, stuffy nose, sneezing,
And stressful headaches.

We've all had enough!
Pack up your stuff and get gone!
Don't come back no more!

Spring, you're here at last.
What the heck took you so long?
Come and thaw us out.

Finally, it's time
To bid "Sayonara" to
Our winter gear.

We look forward to
Warmer temperatures and
Showing sexy skin.

There'll be rainy days,
But we'd rather have that than
Shivering outdoors.

What we're saying is:
"Good-bye, winter. Hello, spring!"
Sincerely yours, Us.

Premium Member Winter's Blanket

Feathery snowflakes as large as silver dollars waft slowly to the ground!
It's been snowing since yesterday and in the house we are cozily bound.
It has blanketed the lawn and adorned the ponderosa with garlands so grand.
Jack Frost has etched arabesque designs on our windowpanes without end!

My spouse and I are cuddled on the couch sipping Beringer Chardonnay.
Shadows dance about the room from the fireplace log smoldering away.
The lights are low and Montavani's soothing music is so pleasing to the ear.
'Tis the perfect ambience as we watch it snow and reminisce about yesteryear.

Spooks the dog and Simba the cat have called a truce to their usual brawling.
They seem to be at peace and, entwined, nigh the hearth they lie sprawling.
Outside, the snow is drifting and suddenly I hear a horse's muted neigh,
Trotting merrily along with a load of cheerful folk in an old-fashioned sleigh!

Currier and Ives would be hard pressed to depict such a scene as this.
With the one you love before a glowing fire on such a night is pure bliss.
I am going to savor this special evening 'cause just as sure as I'm alive,
I'll be up at the crack of dawn shoveling heaps of snow from my drive!

Premium Member Snow Blind-

By the grave I saw blacken snow flakes
Lightning flashed as I witness
Drawn down from blacken purple skies
Burst of brilliants, winter blast snow blind
Upon a midnight electrics static,
you came gently clanging
Deep into that darkness changing, snow blind
To warn me about the steady
That incremental isocheim - that incremental isocheim
Death shall bring trends
Eagerly I looked for tragedy, wintertime
The festivals alteration adjusting
The dynamics brought such sorrow, snow blind
I have dreams of flows misting snow men and women kissing
I crave the coolish, changeable climate
The cyclic cold snap contouring
Take thy gruel hot coal from out my heart
Come stand wit me twit the freezing blizzard
Come dear heart
Much I marveled the integrated icebox
The snow-covered snowplow steadying shoveling
So inviting is the thought…
To be frozen with me come not see will be so kind
If together we be 2 frozen lovers just snow blind

Premium Member Sullied Threads From Yesterdays

There's a pile of sullied threads on the floor
from muddied quarrels of our yesterdays
Remnants of life that we stripped bare
like sheets from a bed needing laundering

It's a hoard of soiled and frayed toggeries
too foul from words to be properly cleansed
I thought of trying to bury the lot of it
but shoveling the hurt left blisters on my hands

Invasive memories haunt many of my dreams
They are suffused deep within my thoughts
An inured scent of us will linger, unbleached, abused
like worn jeans as long as they remain unwashed

How long before I can ignore them lying there
gathered and rumpled in an alcove in my mind
Dark stains that only bring me pain and discontent
Too tainted to be purified by dirty human hands

Premium Member Helping Others Eliminates Sad

Self-serving people are ever so sad.
Selfless people have hearts that are glad.
When people are down and ask for advice,
I tell them to help others, not just once or twice.

For when things are awful, and horrible and bad.
Helping others will help eliminate all kinds of sad.
As you help a little one learn to read or to write,
Your own weary woes quickly ease out of sight.

When you are shoveling your neighbor’s walk,
You do not have time to grumble, complain or squawk.
When you are listening with all of your might,
Your friend’s grateful smile shines with inner light.

So the next time you feel sad or blue,
This is what you truly must do for you.
Find a young mother who needs a break.
Watch her children for your very own sake.

Find a neighbor who needs some errands run.
Stay for coffee and cake. It will be fun.
The generous heart, so loving and giving.
Truly will make your life worth living

Premium Member Winter Storm

The wind roars like a lion
As a sheet of snow, blows on by
Dusting of white sticks to windows
The weighed down bushes tip over
Outside, there is a brewing war
I walk, bting wind on my face,
By the snowbanks climbing higher
I hear loud scraping of plows
The tree branches crack like gunshots
Suddenly, blinded by white-out
All the animals have hidden
Parked cars are buried, pillowed mounds
No time to keep up with shoveling
The storm is whipping nature
Then it slows, miraculous ways
Change tames wind all around
Smoke now seen from.the tall chimneys
Light breaks through and the war is won

Premium Member 'my Winter'

I was born in a snow storm,
and for that very reason I seem to love winter
with all the lovely filigree snowflakes falling
from the sky.
            Outside my window,
is a pure white winter snow blanket.

Some would like to just stay warm inside,
not me- I want to walk in the snow.
A quick breakfast and I dress for winter
with a hat, scarf, mittens, and down-filled coat
oh, and my warmest socks and high boots,
see, I am Canadian and I know all about winter.

My cat wants to follow me out the door,
but I tell her NO, you will get frostbitten!
Oh, the air is crisp and it is bitter cold
and the trees are frozen soldiers
standing silent guard.
                                 A snowflake kisses me.

Already a snowplow has cleaned the street,
and people are shoveling their driveways.
Across the street,
some kids are making a snowman
oh, this brings me back to winter memories
when it was I and my friends playing in the snow.

Turn, turn back the clock to those winter days,
of yesterday skating, sledding, snowball fights
and making snow angels and later hot chocolate
with gingerbread cookies,
and we all had rosy cheeks.

But even nowadays, there is plenty to do,
my city has many outdoor festivals all winter long
and horse carriage rides through downtown!
There is a huge Christmas tree lighting event
and we boost of the longest skating rink
                            in the whole world.
Where you can get beaver tails to eat (not real)
but a delicious pastry and maple syrup sticks.
Oh, have you ever gone horse back riding in snow!

I love the Christmas craft fairs,
and the chilly walks around my neighborhood
looking at the flickering house lights and decorations,
there is a peace like no other
when your feet are creaking in the snow
on a winter night.
