She sits there in seclusion
Recalling her glory days
Before internet and SATNAV
So changed the Mariners ways.
Sat on her eponymous rock
All the year long
She’d lure poor sailors with
A tempting siren song.
In the colder weather she wore
A diaphanous thermal vest
To avoid catching a cold whilst
Flashing her curvy chest.
Her only one motivation
A deeply fervent wish
To take revenge on mankind
For teaming chips with fish.
The Rhine’s a safer place now
Radar saving them from shock
Of seeing a sultry mermaid
Perched half naked on her rock.
To be honest these days
She seldom combs her hair
And grabs any possible excuse
To spend less time sitting there.
Yes the Rhine’s a safer place now
Since navigation went electronic
And the siren named the Lorelei
Has taken to gin and tonic.
The Bewitching Call of the Siren
She ululates a forlorn desire for a human love;
She’s pure evil, not from God’s Heaven above.
This siren’s seductive melody is heard on all seas,
And even on the largest lakes and flowing rivers;
Bringing even seafarers near Die Lorelei to shivers!
Beguiling young sailors to such a ghastly death;
This vile creature’s venom is felt with each breath!
Her visage is one of true love and blessed pulchritude,
Yet Lucifer’s mask is dark with great evil certitude!
Her perfumed scent enlivens her victims’ senses,
Whilst her dark green eyes and deep wet kisses;
Mesmerize her prey, oblivious now to all consequences;
Now feeling her fatal bites and hearing her hideous hisses!
She taketh all pleasure in her world of this evil measure,
Enthralling all her sad victims to a most horrible death;
Now Lucifer counts with joy the lost souls’ treasure!
Always sans merci this siren be to those in her grot,
As her victims find their souls lost to Hell’s dark rot!
Beware say I to all good seafarers, do heed this tale well;
Be deaf to this siren’s call or your life shall end in Hell!

He stumbled up the rock slope
To find the breaded man.
A six gun waiting at the ready,
The bastard’s flesh to brand.
A rock came loose
His foe came round
A stray bullet
Struck in the group
He could not believe his good luck,
His vengeance was at hand.
The race was on around the ridge
He chased that rustler scum
Until atop a stony knoll
He aimed his heavy gun
The shot rang out
The foe went down
The echo washed
Over the town
He stood over the silent corpse
Tired, raw, and stunned
He trudged his way back to the town
Finding faces froze in shock
The though that he might win the day
Their minds had wholly blocked
He gave a shrug
And walked on by
To Red’ Saloon
And Lorelei
He cared not what her job might be
He’d ask her, ready or not
She saw him coming down the hall
And wept their at his feet
Then led him back into her room
For things I can’t repeat
The stable boy
His pa avenged
When none would
Step up to defend
And claimed a wife all on the day
Fellows, that’s no mean feat

On the bluffs above the Lorelei Rock,
Overlooking the Rhine River near Bingen,
Is the Lorelei Ampitheater.
While stationed in West Germany,
Towards the end of the Cold War,
I saw there an awesome concert.
The main band was one of my favorite bands--
Possibly the best band America ever produced
(The only band that ever gave the Beatles any competition anyway).
Cheerleaders from the University of Nevada Las Vegas
Strutted and danced on stage
In uniforms, sarongs, and bikinis.
Rain didn't stop the show or discourage the spectators.
A significant percentage of the audience were young people,
Who liked the songs their parents treasured--
Songs about hot rods, love, and surfboards.
The song of the beautiful Lorelei below
Harmonized with the California sound above.
On Devon’s moors I found myself
walking to clear my head,
to shake off loss for just a bit,
and see a color other than red,
feel something other than dead.
A fog surrounded me that day,
but something stood within the gray.
It rose up high behind the mist,
a shadow only half-seen,
robust and solid in its build,
with hints of mossy green,
Like an aged, medieval dream…
How could this be? And yet I knew,
there stood a castle in the gloom.
Never had there been one before
in this quiet, desolate place.
I knew not where it came from,
if was even of time and space,
and yet closer to it I paced,
Then stopped cold when I heard a cry,
I knew that voice! My Lorelei!
Frozen at the sound, I gasped,
what I heard could not be.
My dearest was dead two months now,
cancer had taken her from me,
but the soft cries made me believe.
I sprinted hard, stumbling much,
my darling wife I longed to touch…
But as I neared, the mist shifted,
the castle faded, then was gone.
On my right I saw it once again,
far afield, the distance long,
but for her I would press on.
The castle moved as if on feet,
forward and back, ever so fleet.
Yet still I heard her yearning call,
and pressed the changing track.
Along the way a weight lifted,
lightness came to my back,
as if some burden now I lacked.
But I paid no heed to pain or strife,
I only cared to find my wife.
It mattered not, the other folks,
who walked out on the moor.
They clustered around a supine form,
but to their thoughts I was inured,
for Lorelei I must endure.
Lighter still came each long step,
but I haven’t reached the castle yet…
Yes, I see it! Now I see her,
a faint shape on the castle wall.
The cry keeps coming to my ear,
I cannot waiver, flag, or fall,
even if I have to crawl,
I’m coming, dear, I’ll be there soon,
I will reach that castle in the gloom.
Listening to the soothing ocean, I
Watch the waves crash the shore like a mad guy;
My happy heart gives a contented sigh,
God's been good to me through ups and downs, aye!
Troubles stifling me like a tight necktie,
All cast out when the sea like Lorelei*
Called out to me, "Come down here, don't be shy",
I feel like a mermaid, a charming fae**,
Or maybe a sea-loving Samurai.

For Hilo poet's "Monomixorhyme" contest
I’ve waited months for the day of your birth to arrive.
The time for you to enter this world is long overdue.
Your mother and I have been married for year number five.
It’s just before Christmas and all I want now is you.
When you didn’t come on time, I got a little scared.
That’s when I realized that I was ready to be a father.
Whenever you’re ready, I promise that I’ll be there
With open arms to care for both you and your mother.
You’ve shown me what it means to love someone so pure,
A life of innocence, with only love to give.
You will always be in my heart, of that you can be sure.
You will be my angel on Earth for as long as I live.
she was a sassy little mermaid
with only one ardent wish
to wreak havoc on mankind
for introducing chips to fish
she’d sit upon that lorelei rock
and keep her constant check
and in the cold weather wore
a cardi zipped up to her neck
but when she spotted a ship
she’d strip down to her vest
which was artfully cut so it
showed off her splendid chest
she’d sing her siren song
and lure them to their doom
there’s many a lovelorn sailor
in a cold and watery tomb
one cold september morning
she was singing for her catch
and she lured a certain vessel
and there she met her match
she tried for an old hull trawler
not sure where he should be
the skipper had gone and turned
wrong way from the north sea
and he wouldn’t tell his crew
no matter what the cost
that they’d be late home
because he’d got a bit lost
then he heard our little mermaid
and her wailing was the last straw
a carefully aimed beer bottle ensured
she bother ed them no more
and while she was thus concussed
he got his sextant out
and realising his mistake
went and turned the ship about
he arrived home a day or so late
but he went and told the crew
they’d been on a secret mission
and they believed him like you do
he never thought any more
about his little slip
nor did he remember the little maid
he’d nearly brained on that eventful trip
the effect on her was terrible
she turned reclusive and very shy
those waters now are quiet and safe
near that once dread lorelei
as for those hull trawlers
they go to sea no more
cos mrs thatcher sold them out
when we lost that last cod war
I never noticed diamonds in the sky before;
so mindless, let such moments pass me by before.
I never glanced a passing smile upon a face
of utter loveliness; it made me cry before.
I never hearkened such sweet, honeyed voice, so fell
upon the siren spell of Lorelei before
I never felt the brush of lips against my own
that were as soft as wings of butterfly before.
I never gave away the key that would unlock
my to heart be a caravanserai before.
I never suffered dawns sharp, stabbing agony
of partings, sorrow pain that I could die before.
I never knew it possible to soar so high;
and why? For there was not a you and I before.
