Premium Member An Arctic Story

At first light trudging through the Arctic Snow,
Is it for thrill or just a Facebook photo show?
As the Arctic wind buffets our flushed face,
The long-awaited walk soon becomes a shambles of a race.
Hands morph to splintered wood, eyebrows deftly freeze,
And yet the brochure promised we’d do this trek with ease.
Soldier on, embrace the frigid grind,
Pray aloud that inner fortitude to find,
Not a sound outside our laden breath,
Every move made with fractured hapless stealth.
But coupled to the cold a streaming sweat,
A larger wager would I not have surely bet,
That a saunter on the glistening Arctic Tundra
Would at most develop the art of soothing Mantra.

Then a booming voice disturbs this quiet introspection,
As the guide engages in frantic group inspection,
His walkie talkie comes suddenly to life,
Stern commands soon wailing shrill with strife.
Bears ahead with teenage cubs in tow,
Keep down, stay low,
Curb the chatter, pretend you’re but a stone,
Form a line, don’t venture out alone;
Rifle’s cocked, don't turn around,
Polar bears don't run - they bound.
Now move backwards, avoid their steely gaze,
Take full advantage of this soaring Polar haze.

Maybe minutes, but seemingly an age,
As we shuffle blindly stage by stumbling stage;
Our Dunkirk - the waiting rubber boats,
Ecstatic for anything that somehow runs and floats.
Back to the ship, sodden and quite sore,
Not to mention frozen to the epicenter of our core,
We huddle around cups of steaming tea,
Sharing stories of all we had to fear and see.
You may well ask, was this the fateful end,
Did we to natures will forlornly yield and bend?

It's true the thought did rather cross our minds,
Fearful of more unscripted scrapes and woeful binds,
However, a good sleep and liquid strength galore,
Did somewhat mollify that sorry shameful score.
For as dawn broke early the next day,
To a person did we in seeming chorus say:
Off we trudge as more adventure waits,
To experience all that Nature's majesty creates,
Our only thought one of craving more,
And so we went, still frozen to our core.

Thank You To the Ones Who Carried Me Here

thank you to the ones who carried me here
the ones that became my parents when my parents couldn’t hear me
the ones who took in that little girl and saved her
the ones who became her friends when the ones she had made her feel like who she was was wrong
the ones who defended this body and kept us safe
the ones who protected us and took care of the hard things
the ones who led us to a future and gave us time to realize that we could have one

thank you to the ones who held me and thank you to the ones that let me hold them
thank you to the ones that let me in
and thank you to the ones that pushed me away

thank you to the ones that forgot and thank you to the ones that made me remember
thank you to the ones that helped me forget when it felt like my every cell was splitting and like my brain was oozing out of my ears
when my heart was pounding so fast and so loud that i thought it would break
when part of me wished that it would

thank you to the skin that i destroyed
thank you for repairing what i broke even when there was barely enough strength to keep our lungs pumping
thank you to the stomach that did its best to keep down food and water
thank you to the nerves that signaled when something was seriously wrong and we needed help
thank you to the legs that kept walking
to the arms that kept lifting
to the hair that kept growing
to the mouth that kept talking
to the ears that kept listening
to the brain that kept thinking
to the heart that kept loving

thank you for not letting us go
even when it felt like the world did

thank you to the ones who carried me here
and thank you to the ones that showed me a reason to stay

Mask

Got to Wear a Mask

Protect your self
That's what we were taught
Growing up
We survived doing whatever it took
Now life for the past two years has been a task
Now you have to wear a mask
Wear a mask to protect you from an airborne virus
That was later called Covid or Corona
Got to keep your mask on ya
When you go out
And enjoy life
It comes with a price
That we shall not ask
We should do what we are told and wear the mask
Whether in a grocery store
In a hospital
Or a restaurant
Wear it and don't share it
Because that germs and we are trying to keep them away
How long is this virus going to stay
They told us to mask up put on gloves and we did
Yet some still caught Covid
So how do you know it will ever end
Now when you get dressed don't forget your mask
Please people do as they ask
Now it's a rule you have to wear them in school
I saw last night that a parent was pissed and now she made a threat to load the gun
Because we have to protect the children and staff
Please do the math
Figure the equations
Do what is told
Do not fold
Never knew the crime
Of protecting yourself and others
We have to start looking out for each other
Who would have ever thought
The day would come when we would have to keep our mouth covered
To keep down on contracting this virus
Urgent cares on packed hospital as a matter of fact
Numbers surpassing
Keep on your mask so it won't keep lasting

The Life of a Libertine

She’s moaning: (”She’s primed and ready. I’ll turn off the light.”)
She’s groaning: (“Off with her clothing and I’m in tonight!”)
She’s shrieking: (“Keep down the noise or the neighbors will hear!”)
Bed’s creaking: (“I hope those termites weren’t nibbling here.”)
Just some of the sounds,
When the girls come around,
Simply put, I do it the best.

Deep breathing: (“It’s not the size, but the motion, you know.”)
I’m seething: (“This one! She always gets off so slow!”)
We’re thrashing: (“Yes! This is it! We’re both going to do it!”)
Bed’s crashing: (“God damn those termites! They beat me to it!”)
Just some of the sounds,
When the wives sneak around,
Simply put, I do it with zest.

She’s scheming: (“Tell me you love me. I’ll leave him for you.”)
You’re dreaming: (“I told you before to forget it! We’re through!”)
She’s crying: (“Oh God! You’re a bastard! How was I so wrong?!”)
I’m sighing: (“Babe, it’s been great. Now I guess it’s so long.”)
Just some of the sounds,
When I play around.
Who cares? I’ll pick from the rest.

She’s screaming: (“It’s over! We’re finished! Don’t shout!”)
I’m steaming: (“But how in hell did he ever find out?”)
Disconnected: (“Hide! Oh my God! He’s loading his gun!”)
I’m detected: (“I think there’s some packing I’d better get done.”)
There won’t be a sound,
When he does come around,
because I’ll be gone way out west.

Funny Bone

I wish I had a funny bone
One that was my very own and not cloned
And so I asked God one fine night
When the lights were off and it was all very quiet
God, damn the Adam whose rib got me saddened
Give me a bone that would only gladden
Something to chew which would make words spew
Into colorful smiles not just to a few
So HE gave me the jaw bone of a donkey
One he borrowed from Samson, now isn’t that funky
He told me to fix it on my jaw and then I would he-haw
It would slay a thousand people and leave them in loud guffaws
And so it went like this
The peeping tom, tomtomed his way
to the top of his team
By dancing on a totem pole
And when the girls were in the changing room
He would peep into the keyhole…
The butcher was butchering the beef
Beads of sweat bursting on his brow
With bated breath and hands that sweat
he slipped the dollar bill in his bin…
Mary had a little lamb,
I thought his name was Jesus
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall,
Can someone tell me how he landed there first of all
A penny for your thought?
Beware you might just step on a mind-sweeper
Four and twenty black birds baked in a pie
They must have been all crows who were caught telling a lie
Trumpeting is Trumps trump card
No money, no honey
No problem I’ll go for a beach bunny
And now the night is on..
Its time to keep down the jawbone
And I hope I don't get stoned

Dysfunction Junction

Politicians are just like flies
Great big mouths and bulging eyes

They talk and talk and say very little
And always refuse to meet in the middle

They walk the halls, back and forth
And get themselves all out of sorts

Over some imagined slight
Maybe some reporter will catch the fight

Then they get want they seem to want
On tv! Themselves to flaunt

And the day will come when a law they will make
And praise themselves, then take a break

Laws for the rich to keep down the poor
You don't have to be a woman to be a whore.

Just pay a lobbyist to buy a vote
Or if you're rich enough, just write a note.

The goal seems to be to make themselves a name
They seem to forget the job is not a game

Global warming and immigration
Healthcare reform and nullification

Legalize pot?-Not in Texas
Just build more prison complexes

Over population? Don't mention it!
The religious coffers wouldn't like it a bit

Tax dollars there, tax dollars here
Whose pet project gets done this year?

Forget the homeless, forget the ill
Just spend the money on Capitol Hill

Who needs water, who needs heat
It doesn't matter, there's someone to beat!

All that counts is the party and the pride
And the country is just along for the ride.

If we get smart, our vote they'll not receive
If they continue this practice to deceive.

Just Be Fine!

Where the Rich and the poor, they co-exist
Each being is humane, and yet there are misfits
Eating Vada Pav(Read “Veg Patty Burger”), adds vitamins
Every diet is a myth, so say the Shrinks

Making money is now every human aim
Quite a challenge there now, Oh damn!
If you are not - in the right profession
Oppression is the challenge that will give you tensions!

With great deeds come greater responsibilities
Every person is now managing credibility
What greater reason to not own yourself
Than making it look like somebody else’s mess!

Every child is learning the path of technology
Every human facing the wrath of technology
Remaining aware is the pitch of the day
Else you tend to each day, easily fall prey!

New nuances, Newer the crimes
Every day is a search for new dimes
This nation has fallen to a lot of prime crimes
Yet it rises each time, to shine!

From Ghettoes to Gated Communities
From Prime time to noted Celebrities
Every day is a Page 3 Event
No News Channel survives without subscribers brent!

Cleaning Canals, rivers and the Oceans
Humans they tend to keep down their emotions
When someone concerned asks the right questions
Emotions turn to fuel the wrong notion

Mind you these are just events in time
Creating history yours and mine
When will we wake up to exciting times
Where we will co-exist and yet be fine!

Modern Life

Housewives peer from behind dirty windows
Catching signs of the scurrying nightlife
They know killing time is really a sin,
Though they can be absolved by watching Ellen and her wife
Where you can rediscover the inner you
She’s got one so you’ll want one too
Can’t call that greed it’s already yours
And coming up after this break.....it’s the daily chores

Stacy cowers beneath the roar of her make up
Had her eyes opened now she just prays she would wake up
Every nerve exposed to the daytime jury
An army in skirts, ‘hell hath no fury’
While next to her sits the great unwashed
He took all her dreams and had them squashed
So she’ll take the tea and sympathy
She just don’t like her slice......Of Modern life

Meanwhile a demi god is sulking in rehab
His powers gone his plumage so drab
He ponders how his life took this nose dive
Was it that third album?
The stuff they found on his hard drive?
And now his life’s laid bare for all to see
He’s the poster boy for grim reality
But he’ll turn this round, he’ll be back you’ll see
If he can just keep down this slice….of Modern life

And there through a gap in the trees
You thought you saw Albion
Endless rolling fields
Under a golden sun
There through a crack in the wall
You thought you saw paradise
But when you looked again
It was only
Your modern life

Fault: Remember, We'Re All Human.

First i say I'm sorry for what I've done
I've had nowhere to go, to hide, nowhere to run.
This isn't the first and certainly not my last
Hard times call for hard choices, to take or to ask...
Rejection, a pill no water can keep down
My life for hire; to the providers I am bound

I can't do this, I'm sick of being alone
Every time i called; no pick up, just the ringing from your phone

The horde it calls me time and time again,
and still you wonder why i ask so little of someone, you, a "friend"

I can't say no, not to you, not to anything you do
It is your choice, your calls, I've got mine to make too.

All I ask is this, just one small thing, pretty please?
How can you say you're something you're not; a friend, just an arrogant tease.

God hear me now, you're vote really counts,
One in the chamber with the barrel in my mouth.

All I ever wanted was for you to hear me out
All I ever did was cry, scream, and shout.

Why if you're real should i feel this much hate
Alas, it's time for our trigger happy date

Goodbye cruel world full of ignorant bliss
Goodbye my fears, nothingness must be tenfold better than this.

With a deep breath, i close my eyes, and i hope....
You were right there before me; with a click, dear God, your swing vote.

Premium Member Summer of '65

Summers meant harvests of berries and such,
chores to do before play.
Running barefoot in lawns that were lush,
the smell of fresh mown hay.

Hoeing the garden to keep down the weeds,
cooling off with the hose.
Bagging up the dried Marigold seeds,
finding Ladybugs in the Rose.

Swimming holes, Dead Mans alley, long evening walks.
Picket fences lead the way,
as I walked with Grandpa and talked.

Summers were the time for Rights of Passage,
lessons in growing up.
When bravery or cowardice sent a message,
with buddies there for backup.

Warm nights allowed for camping out back,
fireflies aglow.
Lying in wait for a surprise attack,
until the lantern burned low.

In those hot Summer days of sixty five,
something in me changed.
Through my talks with grandpa, a calm came alive.

He taught me how to feed the birds,
standing quietly as you can.
They would come to his whispered words,
eating out of our hands.

Grandpa taught me the importance to truly see,
what was slipping past.
I watched the world, as other kids ran free,
knowing Summer wouldn't last.

As for me, I was content to let pass,
those Summer days in shade,
learning to whistle, on a blade of grass.

**Thank you Grandpa for all you taught me.
