I had a dream that I was a butterfly
winged iridescent; my life would flutter by
as I was dreaming a dream of a dream of
my own lepidopteron being above.
Hither and thither I flightily flitted,
or so it seemed, as illusion befitted,
with troubles, eidolons, and nebulous fears.
And thus it continued for one hundred years.
In the Nymphalidae family was I,
akin to the nebula high in the sky
with beauty Cithaerial shimmering bright
in colors that cover the spectrum of light.
Knots and shells detailed in this Hubble capture
glow in light show that can bring about rapture,
cause soulful poets to sing about gladly
(seeing a butterfly wing about madly)
or brood over sadly with soft doleful sighs
the ultimate stages before its demise.
Stargazers perceive it with scientists’ eyes
and give facts and figures astronomer-wise.
The lobes of Twin Jet PN M Two Dash Nine
expand ever outward in pinion design
from central star system, in gaseous streams
of splendorous rainbows pellucid in gleams.
The binary stars at the nebula’s heart
go round one another in luminous art,
spending a century in this rotation,
and form the wings through their stellar gyration.
But let us return to the classical theme
of the Chinese philosopher’s famous dream
(which these rhyming stanzas have sought to extol),
where I found myself playing a starring role.
Diaphanous butterfly wings had I then
in the long-lived dream that I dreamed ten by ten
decades lastingly onward in cosmic time,
as did Sleeping Beauty in legend sublime.
Yet when I awakened, no alae had I.
No longer was I slender winged butterfly,
but veritably was a human once more,
with life to engage in, encounter, explore,
or just suffer through in a sentient state.
How would I create my tellurian fate?
Still I wondered if this was ‘reality’.
Could I be a butterfly dreaming of me?
To die, perchance dream; ay, indeed that’s the rub
that makes us endure the heartache and hubbub.
For death claims all beings as part of its sum.
And in sleep of death, who knows what dreams may come?

My life and my love are the open sea. I do not fear her and she has come to respect this old sailor man.
Alas, it may be that my life of bliss is only temporary because a magical conclave has condemned my tidal journey.
Today, you see, I crossed paths with a dark mermaid whose trickery has anchored my adventures with the briny deep.
That salty wench took the wind out of my sails, leaving me as an empty hull, a moored starfish, writhing in the summer sand.
The gypsy mermaid led me astray with her siren song of sea foam trysts and moonlit water dances.
At once my eyes took sight of her damp bosom and over the bow of my beloved vessel I jumped, nary a hesitation.
Stalwart journey lost.
I swam with all my might so that I could lay my weary head among her iridescent scales with the hope of exploring her seafaring mysteries.
In her arms I laid and to my dismay, the spectacle of a creature more hideous than any life form should spawn, violates all that I can see.
With a hiss more guttural than a sea serpent, she opened her maw.
To my eyes appeared a cavernous gap filled with remnants of my beloved ocean life.
Disgust crawled over my skin as I stepped away in horror, the stench of death permeating the air.
Falling back into the wet abyss I could hear the gypsy mermaid sing her song of death all around me.
Harder and harder I raked my bony appendages, struggling mightily to widen the wake until my despair took over.
One last breath and I let my old friend the sea, take me away.
Fluttering slowly into the liquid unknown, I closed my weary eyes and let go.
At once I sputtered to life, woken by a brackish breeze on my check, burning eyes open as my spent body writhed in the hot sand.
My thoughts are a blur, no conscious desire to wonder upon my seemingly swift arrival to the quiet shore.
I live.
While death continues to burn deep within the recesses of my throat and my heart beats, still I feel lifeless.
Death came for me in guise of that gypsy mermaid and I ran to her without pause, arms wide for embrace.
So, it seems not even the cooling swells are enough to secure me this earthly plane.
Clearly my soul longs for life in the blissful, ethereal realm.
Perhaps next time I cross paths with the gypsy mermaid I will give in to her voracious hallow.
Next time.
Eyes are the windows of a soul and they say ‘Love is blind’
But how do you describe colour to a sightless person?
Such depths to your violet eyes
The windows of your Soul
A flickering source of emotions
Speaking volumes ~ though sightless
Not limited by vision
Not obscured by darkness
Your dazzling beauty of true colour
Conceals your inner world
Of complex greys
Your smiles create rainbows
That stay
All through my day
In a world of colour
For some eyes
Sadness and mistrust linger
Your eyes mirror only
Beauty and Hope ~ Love and Joy
You ask for a detailed description of
the colour of your eyes
How can I?
Futile will be my try
No Master’s artistic brush can decipher
That deeper shade of violet
Changing like the sun’s ceremonial display
Retaining an aura of mystery
Seeking only truth
In your abstract blur of colour
Though ~ let me try
Here place your hand on my heart
How can one see colour
If it can’t be felt
Look through my eyes
Feel that majestic sky
With its beautiful variations of blue
Serenading the aqua sea below
Through sparkles of iridescent silver bursts
A tinge of pearly pink lazily drifts past
I hastily dip my brush just a touch
Do you see? Swirling pink with the blue
Another dip into the aqua of the sea
Hints from the bushes of lilacs below
A smidge of the red poppy
Blended till it’s the right shade of a violet hue
Can you feel my colour?
Behind your veil of black velvet?
My humble artistic attempt
Going beyond my range of limitations
Your
eyes glow
in approval
In that spinning vortex of
violet complexity ~ We dance in your world of darkness
As you whisper to me ~ that your eyes have always seen the stars.
We both look~~~~~incredulously ~~~~~at the same spot
A starburst ******************of light
A ~~~~~~~~~~~~~shooting~~~~~~~~~~~star
My wish ~~~~~~~~~~for you~~~~~~~~~~my love
To be ~~~~~~~~~~~~forever and~~~~~~~~always as
Brilliant as~~~~~~~~~~*********~~~~~~~~~~~you are

True Colors movie clip – with vocals Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake
In ancient looms of my homeland,
Fairies once shuttled across threads of rainbows
Weaving folklores of gods and goddesses.
Our tapestry needed no haberdashery of
Brabubahanas and Chitrngadas or a vijay panchali,
For no tantric-needle knitted our folktales.
I want to go back and melt in folk songs
Of shamans, who rejoiced in carnival of ripening rice,
Possessed by jingling moans of a pena.
I want to orchestrate, one more time, the ballad
Of Luwaopa and Koubru Namoinee, and
Feel the heartbeats of Henjunaha and Lairuklembi.
I want to burn my poetry in immortal angst
Of Khamba-Thoibi, and blow the ashes
On winds above Loktak's gentle ripples.
I want to defy traditions, once again,
By falling in love like Chingsompa and Panthoibi, and
Tell the world I inherited their sweet arrogance.
I want to retrace petals of
Thainagi Leirang, leaving no stones unturned,
Until I find the lost quill in ruins of alphabets.
I want to ask children of my land
To perform Eemagi Pujah by planting a Madhabi
On the stage of another Shingel Indu.
I want to revisit a forbidden village in my past, and
Reopen the second chapter of Jahera
Sitting by the old mosque with a green door.
I want to hear young Khongjomba sing
Lamphel Patki Kombirei, while I sip chilled Atingba
From a bamboo mug, in a karaoke bar.
I want to see Pidoinu dance in a discotheque
To the exotic tunes of Khulang Eshei, while
Her Moirangphi floats with iridescent embroidery.
I wish to put my ears on grandpa's clay courtyard, and
Listen to Leipaklei's sprouting sighs in a crack,
For the last time in this lifetime.
Finally, I like to be frightened again by Tapta, and
Wake up in a faraway dream where
My homeland shines as silvery as the milky way.
Note -
Names of mythical characters and entities from our folktales, history and books are used in the poem.
Pena is a stringed traditional musical instrument, played with a bow with tiny bells, of my homeland.
Loktak is a lake in my native state, which is the largest fresh water lake in eastern India, where the world's only floating wild life sanctuary lies, on which the almost extinct brow antlered deers known as Sangai, in native dialect, are preserved.
Atingba is a locally brewed rice beer.
Leipaklei is a rare orchid which sprouts out of cracks in dry soil/grounds.
~ Oh, maiden of light cracks the wispy air open ,
wandering around viscous spaces
like virgin shadow caressing the edge
of sleep… and the days stretch longer,
taller than guava trees dreamingly shedding
laces of northeast streams when
songbirds, orbits, and a pageant of flowers listen
to a single humming breeze… and when all else
is sprawled quiet, waterfalls marry her certain
lingering star straying on mouths of gentleness
past eons bound by nuptials in iridescent realms…
*O, ilaw, sa gabing malamig, wangis mo'y
bituin sa langit… O, tanglaw, sa gabing tahimik,
larawan mo, Neneng, nagbigay pasakit. Ay! *
Somehow ,curlicues drape a fragrant smoke
leaking out a folk sky; dancing in the mirror
of the mountain pool… a serenade weeps;
quivering, moaning along the inland pass that
someone said morning becomes electra,
that learning how to hear her blossom or
pearl stone unravels the very skin from
which it was born is allowing time to
shed her purity far beyond unknowing a
water’s need to keep still: the juice spills…
**Gising at magbangon sa pagkagupiling
sa pagkakatulog na lubhang mahimbing;
buksan ang bintana at ako'y dungawin,
nang mapagtanto mo ang tunay kong pagdaing. * *
Peeling new faces of time, shaping the width of
endless rhyme in sprays of endless mystery...
like so, a thousand times before and after,
twilight and daybreak entwine… oh,light elusive,
passing through calm eyes of young maiden’s season
is love’s way of coming back to itself. ~
--------
* O, light, in the cold night; you're like a star in the sky
O, light, in the quiet night, your picture, Neneng,
makes one ache…. Oh!
** Awake and arise from slumber,
from your sleep so deep.
Open your window and look out to me
So that you may understand my true lament.
~ this poem is inspired by a harana, a traditional Filipino serenade. The suitor
is accompanied by his friends who back him up both vocally.
At first, the woman's window is closed. The man calls out to her
and if she's interested, she'll open her window.
Singing harana originated during the Spanish
colonial period in the Philippines.~

For Debbie’s Bi-lingual Poetry by nette onclaud
A sense of completion in the
depth of our twining souls, existing as featherless angels, in this plastic world of diffusive masks, and veiled faces of insincerity and darkness, my Venus.
I feel in my veins the healing essence of your being, the lifeblood that nurtures and soothes my unseen wounds and agonies, with the balminess of your majestic seraphic aura—the sacred elixir of life, my Korean princess.
Devoted to you in your every breath, dying, inhaling and exhaling your existence in the glimmer of lunar and sun phases, illuminating my artistry of magic and poetry, with the shimmering light of your irresistible ebony eyes, where i see our future, my marvelous creature.
Our promises of tomorrow, to be the light and cure on our path of being featherless angels, fighting storms, adversities, turbulent currents of anxiety, as demon’s whisper deceit within my mind, flying towards cobalt skies of serenity, merging our spirits, becoming one, my blue rose.
In indigo twilight, your heartbeats rhythmically blends with mine, serenading love songs in mellifluous breathtaking melodies and symphonies of forever us, as i show you my devotion is deeper than the ocean, giving you hope and faith through my pure sentiments, gazing into my eyes upon an iridescent light of profound love, my beautiful soul.
I take and hold your hand tight, promising you to be your home, your shelter, your safe place in every lifetime, giving you all of me, wrapping you in a warm embrace, my blue butterfly.
I found my Eden when i met you, knowing that you were my eternal love, angel of mine from the first soft touch of your soul, grace, profundity in your inner beauty, for you are a rare special being sent to me here on Earth by God, to be by my side to the moon and back, everywhere you go, you illuminate my days and nights, where you have become my world, my reason for living, my juliet.
You give me strength, making me believe in myself when i lose my fight with hellacious nocturnal anxieties—you are my oxygen and my blessing, helping me thrive in this life, my great love.
You are me, i'm you,
together we are the sparkling constellation of forever and beyond astral cosmic connections, in aligment within our parallel universes.
Eternally you, the ocean of my breaths,
my infinito
To where does my soul belong?
at times my meandering mind wonders…
Is it to the vast blue of the boundless sky
or the tangerine rays of the sun at the crack of dawn
or to those stars that glisten in it when light descends and night ascends?
Is it to the fluttering wings of the luminous iridescent blue butterflies
or the petals of gorgeous tulips that greet me to a dreamy paradise
or to the melodious tinkling of the temple bells in the morning?
It is to the mango tree that I see every day from my kitchen window
or its green leaves, twigs, trunk and roots
or the playful bushy-tailed squirrel
that scampers from one branch to another
or to the little brown sparrow
that chirps cheerfully in one of its branches?
Is it to the blank laptop screen that I was staring at a while ago
or these scribbles filling the white screen little by little
or to the flapping of multi-hued wings of my vivid imagination
that soars high and glides, as I write this poem,
smoothly transgressing the boundaries created by reality?
Is it to the tune of my favorite melody I hum often
or the swing that oscillates in my mind whenever I sing it
or to the breeze through which my humming gently wafts?
Is it to the rhythmic ebb and flow
of the silvery waves of the cerulean blue sea
or to the tiny boat far out there, bobbing up and down the waves?
Is it to the gleaming full moon spreading soft light at midnight
or the wick of the flickering candle diffusing hope in darkness
or to the buds finding way to bloom at the trench of rocky soil?
Is it to the relaxed, steady-paced ticking of the needles of time
or the lull of stillness of the pitch-dark night
or the evanescent dreams I get before sunrise
or to the sweet aroma of coffee waking up my senses in the morning?
Is it to the refreshing drizzle of the memories of childhood
or the pleasant petrichor after the first summer rain
or to the arc of vibrant spectrum of colors of the rainbow that emerges?
Unbound, yet bound….
In the all-pervading cosmic tapestry,
to where does my soul belong?
What goes on in the mind of the rain drop
that clings to the tip of a leaf
and is about to fall to the ground beneath?
“Do I belong to the leaf or to the soil underneath?”

What do you tell me, My Beauty?
You turn and stop..,
you look at me with your wistful eyes,
your luscious lips are apart, but you remain voiceless…
The pearl in your ear shines ~
light on your face shimmers mysteriously,
your eyes are calm ~ reflecting, refracting
the depth of your emotions…
those dove-like eyes are artist’s inspiration!
The topaz blueness of your headscarf
with which you have covered your sensuality,
surround your face with serenity of
the ocean, gleaming emerald green
of your dress evokes the unspoilt
beauty of your youth…..
You are not what you appear
to many souls in this mundane world…
they don’t see the painter’s Muse…
You are the nymph, who visited me
for a rare moment of tranquility,
the Pearl shone, an iridescent
gem sparkling, opening your heart~
You remain immortal in my creation...
my masterpiece?!

In a beautiful land far across the ocean,
People used to celebrate Christmas all year round,
Trees along the streets adorned with flickering lights;
Down the cities were malls seethed with shoppers…
All in frantic, but no harm in their enjoyment of time.
Grandiose buildings and churches,
Stood magnificently as the music of the season played;
Lanterns were hanging on walls as church bells ring,
Announcing the season of birth of Christ the King.
A dazzling panorama of the whole place,
With the nearby sea on its serenity and calmness;
The aromatic freshness and coldness of yuletide’s zephyr,
Giving resplendent smiles- rhythm of iridescent glow in ones’ eyes.
As people enjoyed from morning to Christmas eve
Children’s laughter exuded with the gifts they received
They sang joyfully with thanksgiving on caroling
A herald on the season of love in a spirit of giving.
Time came in the beautiful land far across the ocean,
When people didn’t have any single clue of the dangers to come,
A week before the season with no ominous sign,
Trees on streets were washed out in an instant;
A gigantic catastrophe passed by engulfing everyone
Mangled and jostled into darkness where they’re hard to be found,
At snap of fingers… is there another joyful Christmas time?
Grandiose building and churches,
Turned out into a mass grave with flickering candles;
Flowers were scattered where each body laid,
Mourning of their fate…a rescue they begged
All praying for mercy of Christ our only Savior and King.
At vantage point was a horrible scene of a ghost town,
Where green trees and buildings seemed thrown in garbage cans
Marred souls were wafted in stale air…
Starvation and unseen love ones, they grieved.
Just in time came in a devastated land across the ocean,
A miracle happened in His Love Divine
Sympathy and passion reigned in the heart and mind of all men;
People around the world joined hand-in-hand and rebuilt ‘tis land,
The most perfect Christmas gift which arrived on time.
