I was in yoga class,
in the middle of Salutation To The Sun;
and in the moment, I imagined an hourglass,
drip, dripping- then words came in my head one by one;
and I was putting them together till a line I had spun.
We had moved on to Swan,
oh, such a lovely poise but I was syllable counting;
I was there in class but from reality I was withdrawn,
words kept drifting in my head- in words I was drowning;
we were doing the Cosmic Dancer- ouch pain was mounting.
My lines became more lines,
then we did Camel and Bridge- and a poem was in motion;
I was trying to keep the words within my mind's confines,
and finally we had moved to meditation and I was full of emotion;
my poem and I were floating in the deep blue pacific ocean.

Just an Old Cooler
Not much to look at,
Hard to carry,
Won’t through it away.
To you, it looks dirty,
To me, it looks used.
From the late 1960s
To you, it appears empty,
To me, it's full of memories.
I miss my dad so much,
The tears well up, flowing out.
Camping trips to Spruce Knob.
Just me and dad and
The squirrel that got the Oreos.
Yes, they eat chocolate.
The cooler was full of ice.
With drinks, sausage, bacon,
Eggs, hamburger, hotdogs. and potatoes.
Everything a father and son needed.
Camel tent camper with
Nothing fancy, two beds,
Screened in room.
Coleman stove on the picnic table,
Old Cooler by her side.
Fishing Spruce Knob Lake by day
The fresh mountain air.
Campfire by night
Marshmallows, chair, lantern,
Nature one of God’s greatest blessings.
That old cooler made it to
Cherry Grove Beach.
Drinks and sandwiches for the day
I just wanted to play.
Drinks from the
Old Cooler, refreshing.
Old Cooler even went deep sea fishing.
Drinks for the day.
At the end of the day,
Filled with Sea Bass
to filet.
Old Cooler you made me cry.
Now I’m happy.
You really are full of memories
Thanks for letting me reminisce.

Eye of the needle
“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle,
than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” ~ Matt 19:24
***************
Scarred by violence
of estranged silence,
soul behind the screen,
loses it’s bright sheen.
Thought ripples in space,
lost agendas chase,
yet what’s left behind,
are fetters that bind.
Love resource deployed,
infused in the void,
leaves no residue,
as bliss beats renew.
Watch ego undress,
when love makes ingress;
as boundaries blur,
joy begins to stir.
Cleanse heart’s aversion
by soul immersion
in the stream of bliss,
of soul to soul kiss.

Another staff meeting,
there are lizards at the table,
a few goats, an ass.
I know they return to
the fold of a superficial normality
at weekends,
some even rock climb
or enjoy a quiz-night at their local pub,
one builds model ships out of matchsticks,
but here they exist zoologically
on the musky fumes of
their animal instincts.
I consider myself human
but at times my self-image slips
especially when i'm a cog in the machine
The actual boss is not here
yet his name floats in the air
as if powered by a constant
airconditioned camel fart.
Drone, drone, drone,
forced laughter.
Intimidation is in the air
it is as thick as hand soap.
The squeakiest wheel pipes up –
kill me now.
We are all expendable and know it.
Even the warthog
at the head of the table.
The warthog glares at me
while his forced grin smacks my face
like an oily rag.
I catch my reflection in a window,
I am turning into a bedside lamp.
Hours later, driving home, body drained;
bottom sore from extreme sitting,
a mad impossible dream.
I want to go back
and beat the warthog over his head
with my 60 watt brain
until he promises never, ever
to speak to me again.
You missed creative writing class today,
but don't worry about it. It's okay.
Similes were on today's agenda,
and I took notes which I will lend ya.
I'm happy to be of assistance.
Let me give you a "for instance".
The ocean is like the desert, friend,
Like my poems, they have no end.
Of course, the desert is a little hotter,
and the ocean has a lot more water.
Sailing makes you sick? Okay, smartie,
riding on a camel ain't no party.
Both of these are the kinds of places
where you get lost and leave no traces.
You just want to get home for dinner.
How's that for a simile beginner?
Tim is a thinker and operates within the logic of his brain
Reasonable thoughts solutions imperative webs rule
and divide analyses paradigms and guidance from hell
He googles and ogles centrifugal dispersion displayed
on the smoke screen of distracting internet searches
A seeker he is however the computer can think but not feel
He had encountered Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
with the message of emotions complementing his
cognitive certainties meant to assemble the wise mind
Zen it must be then but even the information highway
takes him to Zen Mate a platform for hyperspace security
He can’t even delete it once installed hook line and sinker
Zen Zero Engagement with Nonsense obfuscates imminent truth
looms large as he decides to simply be under a luscious fig tree
An orange loin cloth covers his modesty as he attempts humility
Yet meditation still takes him far away from Gautama Siddhartha
to associations of Gauntanamo Bay Cuba and Alejandro Fidel Castro
but what has Tao got to do with it anyway what about Mao Zedong
Tim’s soul drifts away from internal Peace he is not yet cut out
for relaxation and confuses and corrupts to settle in Nirvana
His begging bowl calls for saffron delight without caviar’s caveats
Descartes shouts 'Carpe Diem' Marx wants knowledge with action
Nietzsche implies Zarathustra but golden ‘zarat’ remains fool’s gold
and ‘ushtra’ the camel does not fit through the third inner eye
Why cannot simplicity be more simple when the here and now
drifts away towards where and when as Tim tries to capture
letting go and let God while enlightenment is clothed in darkness
Tim’s Nike trainers suggest he can do it and Greek philosophy
reminds him ‘Hic Rhodos Hic Salta’ to jump here and not anywhere
else but leaps and bounds refuse to reach outcome detachment
One day he dreams that he might reach what is so close but obscured
for now sandalwood fragrances incense his inabilities to achieve
the essential meaning of life without target driven performance

Fantastical our minds...
MASTERMIND
Catacombs of memories..swirl.
Fusions of light..
Wisp frantically..
Playing with my brain..
Serpents dance to the sound..
the sound of peace in my mind.
Smokey visions of angels in blue.
Violins enchant.
Orchestra sounds..
Jesters practice for the King.
A Camel lays in the sand.
The sun's last radiance..
pierce the darkened sky.
Salt in the sea breeze..
I breathe.
I duck into the tent.
Lantern's glow and candles flicker
Golden lights and Stain glass..
rushing passed me.
I am fleeing down the Cathedral concrete hall.
Must I get away?
Who are they?
Why do they chase me?
I SNAP awake..heart racing.
I smile..
hoping to return again..
I close my eyes.

Whatever pets your monkey
Whatever frosts your cookies
Whatever spills your pills
Whatever trips your trigger
Whatever humps your camel
Whatever melts your chocolate
Whatever peels your onion
Whatever chafes your carrot
Whatever flops your mop
Whatever rocks your socks
Whatever teeters your totter

Made Perfect from Weakness
Of the numerous transient things we make our present desire,
who can avoid all misgivings that deny, lest need only one require?
The battlefields from such pursuits are strewn with the fallen.
But to one a throng of boisterous voices herald victorious,
and to the heavenly Conductor there sings no choir.
From across those fields lifts a low murmuring,
as a fog that shrouds the dead and dying.
Their voices go mute or muffled with prayers for Grace from distress,
while a loving Spirit meanders among them,
comforting them from suffering and making perfect His strength from their weakness.
Who then shall inherit the kingdom, we ask?
Is it they with vanity by works with favored worldly judgment?
Or be it they who are meek, delivered by faith with His Grace, alone?
Elusive is our eternal sufferings,
blinded by countless victories to Him we deny.
So richly blessed are we without thankfulness,
will find it more difficult to enter the gate,
than for a camel to pass through a needle's eye.
Honor and glory to God,
Martin Braun
