The Early Morning
…… is an inspired artist
with a palette of celestial colours;
its paintbrush, brilliant sunlight.
I sit in the hub of the garden
absorbed as the sun clambers skywards,
chased by several scribbled-inked birds.
Sunrise now reaches out to anoint my house,
daubing vibrant light that glistens like gemstones
on windows, downpipes and lazed, garden furniture.
Even the washing line blinks in the morning glory
while casually tossing shadows of clothing
onto the faded backdrop of a lifeless fence.
Slowly, the morning’s lungs breathe out
and shirt, jumper, socks and trousers
start to shadow dance across the enlivened screen.
Then plants freckle themselves onto the slatted stage,
a neighbourly, mop-headed flower peeks curiously over
while an aged, garden spade stirs from its earthy reverie.
They all want to connect to the merriment,
parading in this slapstick, fashion-lit show
while the garden fence just creaks with laughter.

A panda, called Amanda
thought she was so much grander;
and ever so much finer
than all the tea in China.
Although a little fatter
(Which did not seem to matter)
than leopard or the monkey;
she was, for sure, less chunky
than mistress trunky trunky;
who had the largest belly
this side of Eastern Delhi.
Amanda lazed, ate bamboo;
sometimes practiced her Kung-Fu
(which didn't make her leaner,
or alter her demeanor).
The panda called Amanda,
knew she was so much grander
than all creatures on the earth,
even with her portly girth.

She'd spent the day on the beach, all alone,
as skies of morning peach turned amber gold.
Silence broken by cries of gulls, echoing her own
as waves were curling; over the ocean they rolled.
She lazed in a hammock strung beneath palm trees,
trying to erase from memory the words he spoke.
His voice drifted on the wind of a warm summer breeze.
Utterances about the promises he'd made then broke.
She read a little, did too much thinking, mostly slept.
It was exhausting to do nothing and yet feel so jaded,
unless of course she counted the hours she'd wept.
A shadow fell across her face when sunlight faded.

When I was young,in summer sun
the excitement of life,just begun,
hours seemed like days, and days
by brooklets,still,we lazed;
When I was young,in poverty
simple pleasures were had ,for free
improvisation was our key,
for sport,fishing or climbing tree;
When I was young,before tv
books and radio were for me,
putting a face to voice and place
the birth of creativity.
Frugal times,spent so close to home
sans shopping malls and telephone

Bitty birds scuffle and flounce
under the roofed-in.
Barn dusted, rafters crust and whiffle.
Snuffle go the whiskered,
the mousy muzzle's
all along the bent beam wood.
A pepper powdering
in the chink-lit sunbeams.
In this his tumbled castle-keep
youth sky-larked a being
a ghostling ally sight unseen
there in the day-baked barn.
Long days he communed and lazed
in dim swaddled and idle ease
stretched-out and dream-basked,
seeped in the tar caulked wood
steeped in a gown-shadowed glow
with the evening-come nightly
jackdaw and crow.

We lazed in the sun, a small town square;
I ate a croissant while we were there;
she had a coffee, and I, a tea.
I glanced at her, and then she at me.
Somewhere in France, not sure even where;
Sunday, people coming from prayer.
We thought to ourselves, “what do you see?”
“Is this quite how you thought it would be?”
Under a hat, a lock of gray hair;
slight tarnish on the silverware.
A leaf slow, gently fell from a tree
and landed softly upon your knee;
its rusty fall red, a scar to wear.
We sit still awhile; we look, we stare;
“I so love you still,” you say to me,
“I you too, as it should always be.”

She calls herself Katherine,
She thinks she's high and mighty.
We girls know better,
She is vain and flighty.
Prudence is careful
And a little mean
She is never playful
To her, it is obscene
Prudence is very serious
And finds it hard to take a joke
Katherine doesn't like her
And says she will find it hard to find a bloke
Ginger piped in and said, "I love to dance,"
A rueful Prudence remarked, "dancing,
It puts me into a trance."
Maggie entered looking very swish,
She held a plate that was full of fish.
Maggie was a kind girl, easily pleased,
Who vivacious Ginger often teased.
Pooh! " What's that horrid smell that is offending my nose?
It's Maggie with that smelly fish for our lunch, I suppose.
The girls lazed around chatting,
Meow! Meow! Meow!
Maggie made her exit with a swish of her tail!

Its Christmas time again
All around the world
And right here in my living room
Old dog’s lazed out on his mat by my fireplace
Dreaming dog dreams of a bone or two
To be found on Christmas morning,
While old Tom Cat purrrrrrs, in heaves,
In my, his, lazy boy chair
Dreaming cat dreams of his favorites, too.
In every country kid’s letters are
Being read to fulfill their wishes, high,
As moms and dads look in their eyes,
Forgetting naughtiness gone by.
And there are those who will go through
These days and nights that come around
And they can see no change from yesterday
Or days they suffered through in June or July.
So, drop a five or ten in kettles red,
A smile or two to faces met,
A “Hello! How are you?” to someone new
And say a prayer for everyone
And every Tiny Tim.

Leopold was the most comfortable tom cat in the world of soul,
So relaxed, that others often begged him to know,
What can we do to be as cool and awesome as you?
They came to watch him slumber in his leopard shoe.
It was a stiletto with a curvy curve to die for.
Leopold lazed right down, and soon was in full snore.
One small kitten asked a question and was quickly escorted out.
Her mother was prissy about it, leaving with a tiny pout.
The rest of the observers watched, in awe, at this relaxed cat.
He was as confident as Top Dog, Garfield, and Baby King Louie Fat.
Slumbering away, as the gawkers watched him from this dismal alley.
We should move him to a safer space one said. She was removed from the galley.
Leopold opened one eye and told them lessons he would give.
For he knew how to relax, slumber, nap, be sloth like and live.
Some paid him up front, others went on a payment plan.
Your first step is to find a leopard shoe he said. He truly was the man!

Exquisite Queen, conclusion to my quest,
I burn bright now that I have you in sight.
Too long I've lazed about the plain at rest,
I'll dare desire, let's love by divine right.
No more do I cheat the bite of love's reign
I have come prepared for our promised rain,
Let's shake off all the rust and end the pain,
For I am your lion, see my mane,
Though, still, I am a King in cheap clothing,
While you're so many curves for which I've sighed,
Let's run, let's fly passed all fearful loathing,
You leave your hive, honey, I'll leave my pride.
Magnificent woman, my monarch true,
Where is thy sting? I've longed so long for you.

Nearing the end of our summer days
Warmth and sunshine as sleepily we lazed
With the sun's warm rays
June's promising days
Looking to summer's quiet morning haze

SUMMER IN THE SUN
There was a young man from Verdun
Who lazed in the hot summer sun.
He reclined, all revealing,
Till his skin started peeling,
Then he said, “I reckon I’m done”

There once was a young lady from Bligh
Who wilted when temperatures got high
So she lazed in the shade
And she drank lemonade
And said, "Wake me when Autumn is nigh."

There was a young lady from Norway
Who lazed in the light of her doorway
The young men came and went
When their last cent was spent
And it cost some extra for foreplay
The young lady was soon put in jail
She had no one to put up her bail
Failures now she could see
Should have given some free
To ensure the next time she'd not fail

Clouds lazed in river-mirrored sky
As we picnicked in tall spruce shade.
"What lies beyond the river bend?"
Ma smiled, "I never went that far."
Under a raven’s watchful eyes,
Blue water streamed beneath the sky.
As he rode the west wind that way,
I trailed him ‘round the river bend.
With youthful whiskers on my chin,
By clear waters, I carved a path,
Tramping through bright flowers and grass
Beyond the bend in the river.
I never took the path back home.
Nor did Mama learn what I found.
Water gets muddy far from home,
Beyond the bend in the river.
