A tangle of moss in the new gray dawn—
Palm fronds whisper hush, hush—
Waves shiver on the sand.
The sea sighs like a tired dreamer.
Fiddler crabs scuttle sideways in the hush—
Sideways like folks around here,
Slipping sideways in the hush.
Behind ragged shacks, I stand.
Smoke curls like a question mark.
A rooster crows a single note of gold.
Somebody’s frying fish, crab cakes,
And hush puppies.
Breakfast for the sun, maybe.
Somebody’s humming the blues—
A low, slow song of yesterday’s chain gang.
But the sea keeps calling—
Even the sand listens—
Dreaming of a better tomorrow,
In nineteen sixty six.
Shimmering in a chilly mist,
skyscrapers overlooking NYC.
August left into September's cooler mornings,
schoolchildren dressed in plaid and Hush Puppies.
In Central Park the leaves are a green-yellow,
squirrels scurry to store acorns.
Pretzel vendors appear as joggers feel
relieved from humidity,
in autumnal New York.
Driving headed north,
Upstate farms yield cider,
and the Catskills and Adirondack mountains
are banners of emerging colors.
Deer gather from the edge of the woodland
to drink from a pond as the fading moon sails,
in autumnal New York.
Years ago my siblings and I in our Long Island
suburban yard,
leapt into golden and red maple leaf piles,
and ate candy apples-
How much simpler and joyful our lives
were then,
in autumnal New York,
I wish I were still in,
autumnal New York. ~
Hush-a-by little baby
The lambs are bleating in the meadow
The local crooks are down the way
Giving hush money to all of them as pay
Hush puppy quiet. The fox will hear us come.
So hush puppy quiet. And all the hush be done.
Hush my dearest, close your sleepy eyes.
The butter’s out in the kitchen, drawing in some flies.
Hush-a-by little baby
The older children must get their rest
They have to go to school tomorrow
And take a science test
Get those suede hush puppies ready
For they are for my children’s darling little feet
Hush you local crooks with hush money!
If you wake my lambs, they will bleat.
YOUNGER: The truth be told
why would I do
what you suggest
put on your shoe
and take a quest
Just look, behold
my tattered shoes
Hush Puppies they'd be
naught bark nor snooze
so why pick me
OLDER: You talk so bold
of how little I have known
old am I, naught a child
aged I am and much I've sown
my shoes gone more than a mile
YOUNGER: I'm in the cold
for me to know your life to be
wear your shoes as you've asked
walk a mile, naught you just me
your trials revealed, in this arduous task
My soul I sold
for what do I care his life to be now
I've walked the mile and it revealed
his new shoes, to me he did endow
faraway, much he taught and yielded

The days as a counselor with the Y.M.C.A.
We had a Y.M.C.A. blouse and blue shorts with hush puppies.
My father Dr. Wolf had said that they are interviewing for the position of counselor,
I went to the interview and I was hired.
I had a group of young children to look after,
We went on hikes and sang songs.
Became a senior counselor after a while,
We had a camp out and cookout once a month.
The tent we had to put up ourselves,
Made our own campfire with sticks and matches.
We cooked food and marsh mellows.
We hiked along the Rouge Hills,
That is very scenic there.
I enjoyed those years,
The days in the fresh air were very healing.
We have such good memories when we were young,
I thank my parents for their excellent guidance.

Logic- well it doesn’t seem to really fit after all this time.
But emotions though; now that’s a different style of fit isn’t it?
Hush puppies with spiked heels and retribution cushions;
Comfortable yet attractive to the practiced eye right?
On a single lane highway that circles the inner fringes
They go laughing uncontrollably like drunks on an early binge.
And as the depth of their imprints go deep into the ground
One pictures that they are often lonely when there’s no one else around?
.
And attached to the lapel as if in display;
The badges painted red and labeled justified;
Signify the claim of a higher understanding;
Yet too often they are driven by a need to manipulate;
What they can never truly own.
