Basil Huckleberry was an unassuming boy.
We called him boy even though he was in his fifties.
He rode a bicycle around offering rides to everybody
Touched is what grandma called him
He had a low mental IQ I was told
This was before anyone knew about an Emotional IQ
His was off the charts – he loved everyone he met
And he met everyone
Basil spent all day riding that bike around Chariton, Iowa.
When he saw you he would click the bell six or eight times
Unless there was a baby on the block then he would just yell
We all knew his voice; some ran from it. Others stayed to visit.
Basil was pure in one thing – he wanted people to like him.
He wanted everyone to be happy. He lived on pop bottle money.
He could get paid two cents a bottle. Many people saved them for him.
My own mother used to call him over when she had a twelve pack.
He would be beyond grateful for this huge twenty-four cent gift
I remember thinking it was silly how excited this made him.
He never said a bad thing about another person.
Asked if we had prayed for them. Emotional IQ at genius level.
I’m your huckleberry
Always makes me smile
Since Val Kilmer used it in the move Tombstone
My husband and I used it over and over
The month after we saw the movie
Delighted us beyond any sane reason
To this day when I hear it
I have the same reaction
And I smile
pap comes on whisky;
whenever he falls down, says
wildly, "Who pushed me?"

Spread it on toast,
slather it on an English muffin.
Use it in your milkshake,
to make a smoothie,
top off a sundae or
crown a banana split.
Drop a dollop on a cracker
and plop it in your mouth.
Put it on a plate,
mixed with tiny chunks
of real creamery butter,
then spoon onto a
piping hot biscuit.
Rich, dark, tantalizing . . .
one of life's sweet joys,
Huckleberry Jam.
This has got to be the best pie in the world..
It is a meat eaters pie, abounding with tart flavor
which explodes in your mouth with each bite.
It is not a subtle or beautiful pie, no fancy
decorations here. Just a perfect crust, not to
delicate..it must hold up to the lovely purple juice..
It takes a pie maker with experience. The berries
vary each year in tartness..the right amount of sugar
makes all the difference. Just enough , but not to much..
dont want to overpower with sweetness.
But the thing about the huckleberry pie is the fact that
it is so labor intensive. Picking the berries is not for the faint
of heart. They grow in the woods ,beside logs, on side hills,
in the brush.. Cleaning them is a labor of love. We use the
old" roll them down a clean blanket" method.. Some years
the bushes are loaded..some years not a one.
So, if you are ever offered a piece of huckleberry pie
(a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, perhaps)..take it.. It means
you are fondly thought of..we dont give this
pie to just anyone...
