At the supermarket, squeeze this,
sniff that. Of course, color is the
first attraction: Fruit should not
be green -- vegetables must be!
So, green is not always best.
Children, take note! (Her daughter,
Little Genie, as ordered, wrote)
And if the same price for
one, choose the largest and weigh...
but scales sometimes are purposely
light, seldom right. (Genie again
wrote) Now let's do this again: I said
vegetables should be green...though
carrots better orange-yellow. Then there
are eggplants, they must be deep
purple. Oh, and the beets should
be nice, round, earthy red. Sweet candy,
gumballs, hot-dogs, highly processed
foods, hormone chicken and beef,
barbecue with artificial flavoring
should be avoided like the class
bully. (Genie wrote, if it taste good
it is probably bad for you) Read labels
on cans: Mono-this, Chlor-what's it,
if you can't say it, never plate it. Make
a list of these chemicals. Genie
used all the reminding pages in her pad.
(ended with, in the future, only go
shopping with dad)

There is an enormous gumball machine in this hair cutting place.
It was probably gleamingly shiny and beautiful once.
Possibly held three hundred thousand gumballs.
Yes, Virginia, it is that big.
This machine is pathetically empty now.
There are only enough gumballs to fill the bottom inch of her bowl.
I feel sorry for her.

Cocoa tacos and cacao pizza,
fudge fries for sweet crème dipping;
I missed one! Forgive my amnesia;
A jello slide right into gumballs,
just be careful how you ride down;
Children are accosted by its falls;
The root beer float can refill itself,
so stay mindful of your limit;
Cannot be wise to inflate yourself;
Rosy field of strawberry shortcake,
You can eat it but at your own risk;
Berries bite it’s not an easy bake;
Chicken and waffles at every hour
dressed all over in sugared maple;
They won’t sweeten someone sour;
Look up at neon marshmallow moons,
grab ‘em for drinks that glow in the dark;
Stir them with candied edible spoons;
Vanilla mountain with a peach flume,
things missed in Wonka’s chocolate room.

Poet Soul on Fire
Fill your page till it is no longer white!
An overwhelming tsunami painting for others,
Words you pray, which have meaning..feeling.
At last, you breathe total satisfaction.
It is now utterly complete!
You sit, waiting to see if another can relate.
Oh, Lord,what shall be my poetic fate?
That is only is but portionof the joy of poetry.
Like dancing gumballs in a crystaline jar,
Gleaming with joy to see another go far!

Chink! One quarter in the machine ...
Crank! Crank! Crank!
Gumballs tumble ...
Plunk! ... I got one! ... Open the door.
Why was it always ...
Never the color I wanted?

Modern Appetite
by Michael R. Burch
"Women, wine, song ..."
It grumbled low, insisting it would feast
on blood and flesh, etcetera, at least
three times a day. With soft lubricious grease
and pale salacious oils, it would ease
its way through life. Each day—an aperitif.
Each night—a frothy bromide, for relief.
It lived on TV fare, wore pinafores,
slurped sugar-coated gumballs, gobbled S’mores.
When gas ensued, it burped and farted. ’Course,
it thought aloud, my wife will leave me. Whores
are not so damn particular. Divorce
is certainly a settlement, toujours!
A Tums a day will keep the shrink away,
recalcify old bones, keep gas at bay.
If Simon says, etcetera, Mother, may
I have my hit of calcium today?

I'm going to sea in a blueberry boat
Full of bananas and chocolate like an ice cream float
Raising cotton candy sails with my best friend
Picking up speed in the pixie dust wind
Rock candy dolphins jump in the strawberry sea
My crew of gingerbread boys sail with me
Gumballs, candy and sweet lollypops
Yummy filled pies with whipped cream tops
Sailing to Toy Island for girls and boys
Games for everyone and lots of toys
Do everything you always wanted to do
Where magical dreams really do come true

If I had one word to describe you I would say perfect, undeniably, unchanging perfection.
Your skin is like caramel, Your dreads are like licorice.
You eyes are gumballs, And your smell is so wonderful it fills the air with a warm chocolate aroma. You teeth are as white as marshmallows, your tongue so sweet When you use the beautiful mouth to speak, Its as sweet and delicious as honey. Your heart is cased in hard candy like a jawbreaker, But I will take my sweet, and glorious time licking, tasting, enjoying every layer of you into until I hit that soft sweet spot of your as you drown in pleasure. From my hungry, quenching, thriving tongue. You'll want more, and more of me. Your sweetness is my addiction, my hunger is you desire so lets satisfy both our wants enjoying each other and our self proclaim bliss. Some one made you me my sweet, sexy, appetizing Island dream. And I am your duchess of sweets sensual, and loving queen. You are my addiction, and such it is my price because you alone can spoil and rot me to my core. As I finish devouring and conquering yours.

What If?
What if guppies and goldfish could swim through the air?
What if birds could only relax by sitting in a chair?
What if spider webs looked like charming bungalows?
What if cheese sticks had to be hunted out in the jungle-os?
What if curtains were carefully hung up in the Maple trees?
What if cookies only came from buzzing little bees?
What if horses were allowed to take rides on our backs?
What if skateboards could take a ride on the rail road tracks?
What if Saturdays came more than just once a week?
What if at your birthday presents you could take a peek?
What if alligators played music every time they’d sneeze?
What if teachers taught Algebra to the chimpanzees?
What if delicious gumballs grew out in the yard?
What if scoring soccer goals wasn’t all that hard?
What if arching rainbows were something you could touch?
What if with each of the colors you could skip Double Dutch?
What if the medicine that the doctor gave you tasted like ice cream?
What if you and your best friend could go to sleep and dream the same dream?
What if all of these things were completely true?
It wouldn’t matter at all to me because I would still love you.
