I may be almost four foot long,
but you scare me a bit
I shall retract my neck and head into my shell
what are you doing in Galapagos anyway?
you do not look like our usual species
I am the oldest living land animal in the world
yes, I am reclusive, so please go away
I will live to be one hundred and fifty
if I am not disturbed

Galapagos, o once mighty island
Rising up from the sea
Fertile, green, teeming with life
And lovely as can be
Your majesty exceeded all
And told a different story
Of species that regaled the earth
In different forms of glory
And everywhere, there is beauty
In things which grow and creep
In things which swim and fly
In precious things to keep
For millions of years, these islands
Were jewels of land and sea
Of all things bright and beautiful
In splendid greenery
The fires once that fueled these islands
Are fueling other plates
And yet, in peace and beauty still
Are creatures with their mates
Dear Galapagos, dear island home
The loneliness of thee
Becomes thy time on Mother Earth
Thy lasting legacy

Galapagos Island Ignoramus, (oops) Iguana
or
Seventh Grade Craziness
Written: By Tom Wright
12/12/2003
I didn’t mind being called an ignoramus,
The class was divided; about half thought it was a compliment,
But I knew she was calling me some sort of big lizard.
I was happy that it wasn’t dimwit or blockhead.

The queen of Galapagos
Limerick
The queen of Galapagos burst through the seas
She loved to give us a treat of soup and peas
Her soup was of cantaloupe
Her peas were of Pantaloupe
We left the island with a big piece of cheese

Lizards of Galapagos
Lizards on Galapagos are large
With appendages going this way and that
Not human in most regards
Iguanas crawl and that’s not all
They dance the Fandango but not the Hula
(In consideration of the rules)
We are happy to report
They eat flesh but not in church
Sex is forbidden as well
In isles and in pews
All creatures on Galapagos have lizard smiles
Are quiet when they sleep
And when they die…
Become extinct

Note- These massive turtles live in the Galapagos Islands. They are herbivorous
creatures eating prickly pears, cactus, grass, and ferns. The Geochelone Elephantopus
species have been known to grow to 500 pounds and live to 170 years. The Galápagos
archipelago is a Province off the coast of Ecuador.
A herd of turtles slither down
The Isle of Galapagos.
One huge centenarian
Was quite cantankerous.
Elephantopus was his name.
Six feet long, his moniker matched
The enormous frame
Dragging by in slow dispatch.
He stopped to eat some prickly pears,
A real reptilian feast,
Swelling out his shell of bone
This mammoth tortoise beast.
One-hundred-seventy-years old,
With five-hundred pounds pantomimed.
He gave me no quarter;
I gave him no dime.
