Here rest my oars.
A killick thrown to the school of fishes,
To still my boat from the peering waves.
Fishy-wishy scatter as water splatters,
Like wood chips flying when the pickaxe strikes.
A ship draws near, but my killick blocks its kiss—
Its stale mouth might stagger my rest,
And send my gathered fish fleeing the net.
Much of the mud my killick swallows,
So the wave won’t tug the boat an inch.
More students from the school must reach my net.
A long wait beneath the twilight-dimming sky.
Yet the fish market waits for a refill.
The cool breeze begs my eyes to close,
But hunger bites hard with its mocking teeth—
My killick just has to steady the float.

I spoke to the sea,
a calm breath
though a gale raged
inside of me – both my
sails shredded, I begged
for mercy:
“Thou art the greatest world current,
what brag would be a wretched notch
like me!? Devourer of coasts!
Reshaper of vast continents! Bane
of man’s mightiest fleets! Countless
formidable have foolishly challenged thee, and now
lie silent in your crushing depths...were I
added to such esteem numbers,
a bald-headed, gray bearded, toothless
old dote, it would be a disgrace~
better toss me high into the
air, toward that island over there, for
unlike you, Great Wet Majesty, crocodiles
and lizards have no pride; then there
not be shame of yours to hide –
promise, never will I return….”
and this, dear children, is why
grandpa cannot take you fishing --

No wish to carp or cock a snook
I won't leave you in the lurch
but oh my cod take a look
what a plaice to perch
as just for the halibut
putting seahorses out to paddock
is enough to give one
a severe bad haddock
so no red herring I don't flounder around
take a peeled eel flake of baked hake
plus pinch of pickled pilchard
and an ichthyic sandwich make
but if my words are vitriolic
you may grunt and kiss my bass
it's all a load of pollock(s)

I’m resting in bed
with an aching head.
Ma’s fussing and said
“I’ve cooked a huge fish
it’s truly delish”
I try to feign sleep,
pretend to count sheep
but I want to weep!
I’m craving beef steak,
rich cheese pasta bake
or a slice of cake!
Ma made me pike pie
And I cannot lie
I started to cry.
My pike pie I squish
I loathe this fish dish!

There is one job I could never do
ever since leaving school this was a no
never felt any real direction at that time
but a fish shop job was never ever so
The smell of fish always put me off
even from a early age to smell
I just couldn't stand this aroma
fish and me would not ever gel
Today when I walk past a fish shop
just have to move on up my speed
so glad to reach another store
for to any other shop I'll take lead
The thought of handling these creatures
so slippy, slimy, and lengthy things
my answer would be an immediate no
foreboding fish thoughts mindfully brings
Fishy smell is not at all me
its funny as I don't cause a fuss
most foods I like even some I love
but take away fish or I'll get the bus
( This is written about the one job I could never do for the smell would make me run away)

There once was a fish kept in a bowl.
In his little sphere he had control.
But then that damn cat
Knocked it over—splat!
And proceeded to gobble him whole.

We'd get the punt from St Mary's church,
We clambered aboard, with enough gear to make the punt lurch.
There was my Dad my Uncle, me and a family friend,
You could feel the day was going to be hot,
But off we went to discover our fishy lot.
We each had a very expensive rod, but we was one reel short that someone had forgotten,
But Dad didn't mind he was just as content to lay back and rest, while we all put our angling skills to the test.
We tried for at least 5 or 6 hours but we had nothing not even a bite,
Well except for my Dad who unknowing to us had tied a line to his big toe, and would you believe he had a sharp tug, and he pulled on board a shimmering Perch,
All we could really do was to fall about laughing and to cause the punt to make one final lurch.

SOUNDS FISHY
In this recent competition I was number one
And they confirmed officially that I had won
But I actually heard from entrant number two
And she was also told that she had won too
I do wonder what are organisers really for
So few entrants, as there were only four
The prize was a Scottish holiday up in Fife
Not for the full seven days, but only five
I requested if they could extend it to eight
But I never made it there, something I ate

The scales fall swiftly from the eyes
And suddenly, we realize
Those fish we flushed down the toilet
Were clever, sentient koi that
Faked their death and swam the sewer
(Shawshank-style, for savvy viewer).
Wool pulled by infernal guppy,
Now we’re walking the new puppy…

A school of silverfish looked up at me
At least it seemed their eyes could see
I acknowledged them with a bob of my head
They bobbed me back ~ That's all we said

A black cat with bright yellow eyes
Can go out at night in disguise.
He'll raid every pond
Then quickly abscond
With free of charge fishy supplies.
