MAID OF ORLÉANS
Poem written for and submitted to “Myth and Memory” Poetry Contest, Vanya Evangeline, sponsor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A warrior saint came from the plains of rural France,
a beautiful maiden named Joan, dressed in simple clothes,
not of noble lineage, but of modest beginnings
her faith unmatched.
Shielded by heavenly whispers,
she took up a religious cause~
mounted on horseback, brandishing God’s mighty saber,
she fought for her country in the name of the Lord.
Unscathed from battle she emerged,
waving her banner of courage throughout the land,
but treason and betrayal
would one day bring her untimely end.
Alone she stood in the court of politicians,
falsely accused and forsaken; yet,
in the face of pain, Joan’s faith and resolve
would not be contained, her spirit and fortitude remained.
The humble shepherdess warrior, was bound to a stake
her body consumed by fire, her valor inspirational.
This humble warrior saint, later canonized and martyred,
continues to embolden and enthrall.
Hello, my most esteemed poets,
I am trying an experiment that I believe has not been done here on the PS site. I have posted a new poetry contest called "The Prismatic Self: A Gauntlet of Mirrors within the Arena.".
The JUDGES have now been selected:
1. Lin Lane
2. Ink Empress
3. Duke Beaufort
4. Vanya Evangeline
5. Anne Winter
6. Hiya Sharma
7. Andrea Dietrich
8. Daniel Rodgers
Since only one person can view the contest, all contestants' submissions will be distributed between the group for input and ratings. When the contest is complete and we have the final list of winners, we will have personal insights from all the judges for each winner and all honorable mentions.
Thank you for your time and patience
Blessings,
Daniel
Does an eager hand feel a throbbing heartbeat truly divine
making a lover's promise under a swaying, balmy pine?
Why look at blinking stars that aren't amazingly crystalline?
Isn't your wish another dream sparkling with starshine?
Cross those hands and embody the fidelity of a Caroline,
mix reality with dreams and all failures to divide dwine;
think how sweet was the fleeting kiss of that young Roseline,
her body was seductive, but her mouth was a real landmine.
Brides seem happy when their mates play Frankenstein,
but their jealousy hushes the faint voice of a thirty-nine
old girl on the other line shouting obscenities at Evangeline;
most wives won't excuse their husbands with a witty punchline!
Affairs don't last when commitment is shunned after drinking a strong wine,
a drunken person can't make a distinction between a dog and a feline;
here comes Kataline with her rolling pin with the angry look of a Delphyne:
" You've sworn your fidelity to me, not to a tramp you've found on Loveline! "
Amos made a promise, took a sip of wine,
Poured his heart out and he bowed his head.
Pledged to come back safely as Evangeline
Shed a tear for every word he said.
Polished as the buttons on his uniform,
Amos bowed to her and kissed her hand.
Gone to face the fury of the raging storm.
Hoped his lady love would understand.
Troopship cuts the water on a sea of glass.
Lookout taken with a homesick dream,
Focused on a vision of some cherry lass,
While a periscope lies dead abeam.
Walking down the corridor by candlelight
In a mansion full of silent rooms.
Loiters in her husband’s study every night
Where the presence of his absence looms.
Soldier comes one morning with a telegram
And a story of a ship gone down.
Sadly tips his hat and says, “I’m sorry, ma’am.
What a shame it is when brave men drown.”
Courage, honor, loyalty and songs of war,
Verse and chapter writ in martyrs’ blood;
Second-hand excuses from the time before,
Grand illusions worth their weight in mud.
A child was formed in the mother's womb,
The mother filled with many dreams of her child,
Filling joy in Mother heart in every kick and every move,
Wanted to be the one who will achieve everything in the world.
The one who is going to make many life memories,
The one who is going to carry many people's smile,
Day by day making the mother's expectation stronger and happier,
And the day came when the mother knew the child going to be born was a princess.
The mother was filled with joy and happiness but her family and society was filled with unhappiness.
They didn't want the princess to be born they wanted a pride of having a prince first.
The mother was soon forced to not have her princess and with sadness and unhappiness the princess was unborn.
All the dreams and wishes vanished away and the unborn princess spirit was reached to heaven before she could keep her step into this world.
Buttercup as an anemone, I see my bonbon
In the midst of a wharve spin,
Graciously thin languette,
Ecclesiastic, a true coquette,
Offered for a handful of sequin
On the 1000-thread linen, rests Evangeline!
Shine the uptown shrine with whispering vocal cords
As the frock is overcome with a slow descend,
Never mind the sallow ambience of
An ageing Jesuit mission, or thereof,
Words of prohibition annulled by disparlure:
Madame! – as they say, I don’t kiss-poor.
My appearance, utterance of faith,
Expected and grandiloquent,
Clasped the mortification with inflamed blood,
Yet budding desire, instantly prescribed,
Not to let it out of my sight.
But to greybeard wonderful torrents of luxury,
About to 5G live-stream this imperious rite
Will put a stop to any cavil,
A cue in hand to excite ’n’ appease the inner devil,
I abide the coming, Evangeline!
Cordial satisfaction, marvellous plantation of joy,
Memento mori, I must this very moment, I must die.
Fly away little bird
from whence you came
into my freezing hand.
There is little fire
in my heart
to keep thy soul in winter.
I can no more join
Thy sweet angelic psalm.
My voice is gone
From my lamentations
Of my lost Evangeline.
Fly away
Beyond dark snares
To perfect rest
My arms cannot provide.
Fly away
O prey of love
from whence you came
To the cage of freedom.
