We have this time around.
Thus all will fade.
Millenniums underground.
As bones turn to clay.
It is deeply profound.
To kneel down and pray.
For we know not that hour.
Nor the last day.
Matthew 24:36.
I turned ten two days ago,
I blew out the candles with a heavy sigh.
You were born today,
Still.
Your lips inherited
The reddest hue of cardinal feathers,
Your rice paper skin
Pale and soft, fresh as silken snow.
I never knew what your eyes looked like
They never opened
Infinite iris colors
Never to be discovered
When I held you in my arms,
The guiding hand of God
drifted away
I gave the coldest of shoulders I suppose.
I looked outside the hospital window,
A frigid breeze made
The trees sway with unease
But all the leaves stayed in place.
A confetti of dust drifted
In the air conditioned hospital room
And time yet stood still
On my brother's only birthday.
Lee Retiree, 66 Remix
Never one to be lazy,
Lee’s energy astonishes,
Clarity hallmark avoids the hazy,
Kristie et. al. he garnishes,
Materials investigator a la Dick Tracy,
Friends, Lee never tarnishes,
Quick stick moves as a Blue Jay,
Loyalty, he harnesses,
Learned from all at Poly,
Save the nobility (Kedusha),
Of the morning (Youthfully),
For some, retiree harshness,
An evening, but we wish Lee’s a dawning Be!

My mother had nine siblings
Two died young
Survivors were four girls, three boys
Girls were tight
Boys not so much
Four lived to be over eighty
I called Uncle Ray to invite him to Mom’s 80th birthday party
A total surprise to her.
Afterwards, she claimed she had not seen him for forty years.
I had no idea when I phoned him they were estranged.
He lived a mere sixty minutes away
He and his wife both came and glared at everybody.
I thought it would be a joyous reunion
It was not
I figure it will be another forty years
This time every year
September, I remember
a special surprise-
Placed into my toddler-arms
my newborn baby brother

Today is his 80th Birthday!
August 8, Esteemed Date
My brother the reflective other,
Thoughtful father, contemplative friend,
Helpful mend, curative treasure,
Michelle is Rob's God send,
Lucas his venture, a raison d'être,
My bro' bucks the trend,
One of a kind measure, to whom we're indentured,
So humble, Rob's beneath ground,
Big heart, quick start, smart ardor,
Laughing at life, he'll be among the standing at the end,
Rob's a Hall o' Famer but he'll decline the corridor,
Not one for honor, another's honor Rob would rather tend!
I miss you so much.
You left us too soon.
You brought us joy.
You were a happy boy.
So full of life, I wonder
what type of man you
would have been, I am
certain you would have
been an amazing man.
Sending you this birthday
wish heaven bound dear
brother with wings of love
I miss you very much.

Alexis Y.
I pick up the phone and call unknown people daily.
It is part of my job, and I get a kick out of it.
I call and talk, and laugh and chat, and it is fun.
I stare at the calendar. My brother’s birthday.
My sister has urged me to call him.
I have not spoken to him for six or eight years.
I doubt he remembers who I am.
I reach for the phone, stare at the number.
What would I say? If he would answer.
What do we have in common? What is there now?
I put the phone down, staring at the number.
It might not even be his number.
Ding ding. It is a text from my sister.
“Did you call Rex?”
This is almost as irritating as me not being able to call him.

Waking you tell me in a voice I no longer hear.
He came.
Opening the second bag you say.
My brother is sick.
You tell me its my birthday.
April !st.
Waiting by the front door and crying.
He never comes.
Hugging me tightly and telling me you love me.
I leave.
Sleeping peacefully the lid is closed.
I cry.
My Brother took a bag trick or treating for me when I was sick. He was found dead in 1985
