Best Language Barrier Poems

Language Barrier

I couldn’t understand the language she spoke,

at least not all of it,

but the emotion pouring past her lips,

the tears in her eyes, her clenched and shaking fists

enunciated more clearly,

than any piece of English Poetry I had ever read,

and grabbed me, held me still.

…In that moment, her soul was in my arms.

In that finite, tender breath of our lives,

she was my mother, my best friend…

but I could not console her.

I didn’t have the words;

and my heart sank into the

concrete between us,

wet with the pain of God’s rain

and her tears.

                  …Were my tears

So, I simply opened my palms

toward her crouched form and

spoke the only words I could

fathom, that would be accepted

by a stranger on a dangerous street.

"I am sorry, It will be okay. God will bless you."

I knew she did not understand…

"Lo siento"

                  “que va a estar bien”

                            “Dios te bendecira’ “

the words were as messy as the overturned

duffle bag at her feet…and fumbled, slowly

from my lips, as my knees hit the street.

Two strangers, cried in the rain,

knowing nothing of each other’s suffering,

and yet we shared the weight,

together, for those few moments;

the barrier of language was broken.

Love spoke for us.

…Love transcends any language

Never Fazed By a Language Barrier

A friend once told me
How he was fascinated by me-
By how I could walk up to absolutely
Anyone and be their best friend,
Switch cultures like t-shirts
Emblazoned with "I heart
Fill-in-the-blank..."
I'm not sure quite how to explain
How once you've observed society
For long enough you realize
That just about everyone you
Will ever meet acts just like
Your own teenage brother,
Like your mother, your father,
Like your little sister-
Like the best friend you've
Known for your whole life...
Everyone has heard the phrase,
"We're all God's children,"
But it seems like everyone
Is suddenly blind to their
Family resemblence
When one of them says,
"Que tal, manito?" instead of
"What's up, bro?"
Don't tell me that it's
Not possible for you
To communicate with
Someone whose birth certificate
Lists a country of origin
That's different from your own-
Don't say you can't pick up
New language when "YOLO"
Was not an expression that
Existed on the face of the Earth
Until a couple of years ago...
Besides, we both know how you
Always found a way to
Gossip in class, by shooting hand
Gestures and loaded glances
Halfway across the classroom-
Halfway across a globe never
Seemed all that different to me,
So maybe that's the reason
I was never fazed
By a language barrier.

No Language Barrier

A Chinese man who rolled his rrrs
Went into a shop to buy cigars,
He said, "Ri'll rav Renry Rinterman's rover rhere.
The grinning owner said, "Your English is bare,
But give me rifty rollars, here's your rox of rigars."

She arched her slim self,
Spun around,
Blushed a bit,
Held the river railings,
With both her arms!
No words were spoken,
But the body said,
If you love me,
You are on!

He squared his jaw,
Looked masculine,
Shaped his eyebrows,
Smiled broadly,
And held out his arms!
No words were spoken,
But the body said,
I do love you,
Let’s get on!

He offered his hand,
She took it slowly,
They held hands,
locked eyes,
And walked on!
No words were spoken,
But their bodies said,
We love each other,
Our lives are on!

Nothing lonelier than being alone in a crowd
standing still in a bustling sea of aliens
they speak their dialects and look
right through me as if I wasn’t there

Feeling insignificant I don’t belong
and everybody knows it
like an imposter trying to fit in
but wearing the wrong camouflage

I try to merge with oncoming traffic
but they ignore me and won’t let me in
refusing to give me a chance
I am not worthy and they let me know it

Secretly part of me thrives in their ostracism
content that I have made my attempt
that like amber in layers underneath
there is more to be found in silence

A sweet coed from Kalamazoo
met a young man in Lima, Peru.
But her lack of Spanish
made him feel less mannish
and hand signs were all they could do.
