"Fragments and crumbs of life,
all the little pieces"
John Ruskin 1853
Having lived with our Mom in Sydney for six months
Federal Police returned us to live with our father
He had begun working as the art teacher
at a small Christian school in Tasmania
He and other staff members lived at the school.
I was 8, my sister 6. Geneva was experimental then.
Elementary students were taught together in one hall.
Desks divided from next, talk was completely disallowed.
An American curriculum called ACE was adhered to.
As the art teacher's daughter, naturally I washed all the brushes.
Three utterances compiled in class per day earned detention.
Despite it being 1991, rulers whapped knuckles on occasion.
Cherished butterfly catching buddy, best friend, Penny
Fed apples from ample pile to fence wire necked horses
Dawn saluting dairy sold milk for locals, chapel on site
Peers lived a wall away, an idyllic community lifestyle
Generally, three afternoons per week, my father took
My sister on playground, shopping outings.
I stayed home. Instructed not to go outside.
Staff's children grassy antics gazed at through glass.
I ate vitamin c tablets by the dozen, and scrapings of butter.
A staff member bought all our groceries from a limited list.
I sang for company. There was no radio or TV.
My Dad and sister returned at nightfall. Chewing on sweets.
Alone in the house, I imaged it was a cruising ocean vessel
I sailed down the dim driveway, swamped by giant pines
I took apples, a cow, a Bible, pencils for sketching horses
Sailing on jaunty sun hugged foliage, I was captain

Bio
Diving deep into the depths of her soul,
I knew I would love her forevermore.
Smiling shyly, she left love in control,
seductively sighing, desiring more.
Golden sunlight gilded her honeyed locks;
like spun silk, gently blowing in the wind.
We stepped outside of time; no need for clocks;
regrets or forgiveness, for neither sinned.
We felt our two souls melding into one:
now there is no 'I' or 'me': only 'we'.
We no longer desire to find someone:
for the moment, I found her; she found me.
It is no surprise, love evolved from trust,
but so did hope, defining love from lust.

Sonnet
He read history, and wanted to change it,
joined it, and changed nothing.
And then he dreamed he took command.
The skies might open,
doubt would disappear,
a silent score could sing.
Technology, however, never could compete;
there was no measurement to lay the bounds,
no need to charter aid
for that was an implicit realm
someone
somewhere
sometime might understand.
His history is now.

This modern world we inhabit
Is millions and millions of years old
And out of this world evolved a brain
That became self aware; and eventually out of control
Hardwired with a conglomeration of Instincts and awareness
This creates conundrums for mankind
This brain desperately seeks peace
But is at the mercy of an addictive, loquacious mind
This mind longs to be in the moment
But it's misguided efforts take it further away
So it distracts itself with modern trivialities
Only to return to the comfort of familiar pain
Plagued with cognitive biases
The only mammal with self disdain
The burden of awareness
The price a conscious creature has to pay
This mind adapted from an environment
That’s far removed from modern times
These traits are the driving force of our behavior
Sadly, most will suffer, until the day they die
We ask, “why are we self destructive?”
We’re confused about why we’re not focused on what's at hand
We refuse to acknowledge our shortcomings
Like an ostrich, we stick our head further in the sand
We attempt to excuse our destructive behavior
We make a halfhearted promise to try
But the problems not food, drugs, or alcohol
Those are just symptoms, not the why?
So, many become a victim
They conclude, no discipline or impulse control
They deflect by saying, “ it's hard”
Not understanding, where there's suffering, there is potential growth
Human perceptions are contingent
Filtered through an ancient neural development history
Hence, the human dilemma
Unfortunately, what we find, is what we bring

Evolved
Written By: D. Collins 10/28/14
There are a lot of people who’ve been married for years.
Then, suddenly find themselves in a world of fears.
The world has evolved while they were at home.
It’s a different story when that marriage is gone.
They soon feel free, and start hitting the streets.
Naïve to predators that are in it for “me”.
They refer to “dating” as if they are nineteen.
But, the world has evolved to being ruthless and mean.
Everyone is hungry, and everyone is a “mark”.
Evolution stepped in to get at all o’ ya'll.
After marriage know the world isn't the same.
Know that people you date are trying to upgrade.
Think “mark” before romance and you’ll have it solved.
Absorb this crash course on how the world evolved.

the world order became so chaotic
way after ape already evolved to a man
it’s nonsense, if you call this an evolution
the ape shouldn’t step on the earth and stand upright
the sun is a whirlpool of blaze overflowing lava
the black hole is a tundra snowstorm formation, the torrent of a glacier
that’s the difference between comedy and tragedy
is one thin sheet of paper, life and death is on the same path
don’t be hasty, when spring comes, the flowers bloom
there’s no need to force the flowers to bloom before their time
men's desire is to see the flowers in any season
perhaps, that’s why every flower
has a different shape and fall, regardless, in season
the way of men’s life
rolling along in changing seasons all different,
it’s difficult to distinguish the ape from the tree
or the man the potter made with clay?
and further, it confuses me more, because
the destination is the same for all creatures
even so, there’s no need to sink into
a swamp of unsolved problem
and torment yourself;
simply look at the day
earth circles the same orbit there’s light and darkness
when the morning comes, you’ll see the sun,
when you see the sun you will live another day,
and repeat conscious or unconscious, advancing
one more day stepping on another day.
I wonder why the ape came down from the tree
and made this world complete chaos;
in the name of mankind, apes made men
ugliest creature on the earth, made them hate and harm
each other, to sustain their lives, Oh; what wicked apes!

Where as once we migrated following our food
in an attempt to save our endangered race,
we have now evolved to migrate successfully
into outer space.

Drawn by rage and afraid to be free
Withering like roses sunk within the sea
Believing in what my heart teaches me to do
Telling me to act out and show them what my mind knew
Scared to pursue what I was born to do
I can't believe the opportunity I almost blew!
Someone or something wanted me to get out there and pass!
Being in Law Enforcement at last!
My dreams do come true if you first dream
Dreams aren't as hard as everyone makes them seem
I want to make a difference in people's lives
And stop the violence made by guns and knives
From now on I want to be "sworn-in" and enlist
I pursued a dream that first evolved from a wish
Starting at the bottom first is right
Nobody expects you to learn it overnight
Working with the best of all will rock!
On my educational journey to becoming a cop

We evolved at a furious pace.
Oh, how noble we are as a race!
But why are we here?
The answer, I fear,
is to always be stuffing our face.

...To me it seems morality
is what holds us back from the edge,
what keeps us from just destroying,
and leaving all enemies dead.
But more and more I think that it
was not some product of our mind,
but a product of evolution
that developed slowly with time.
Since no predator can stop us,
since we defeat even disease,
did we evolve our moral sense
to check those who act viciously?
Were the ones who killed unrestrained
killed off by their own aggression?
Were those first real moral stirrings
what kept folks from being undone?
Were the humans who lacked such thoughts
winnowed down, soon too few to breed?
Did evolution select those
able to resist killer creeds?
Is that why so few people now
have those brute, psychopathic brains?
Are those people just leftovers,
from a strategy now disdained?
If so, it means our moral codes,
are not something we made ourselves,
but just evolution’s response
to minds that can make living hell.
It wasn’t some higher calling
that kept us all from being wrecked,
morality is nature’s way
of keeping our species in check.

Humans seem rather peculiar
amidst all the species out there;
reason, language, high emotions,
from romantic love to despair.
But one thing you always notice,
regardless of where you might go,
that all our tribes and nations have
established their own moral codes.
These differ from hierarchy,
the kind you’d see in a wolf pack,
such things are built upon power,
the deeper thinking they all lack.
Wolves don’t ask, ‘Do I believe this?
Do I think, in essence, it’s right?’
They go along mostly through fear
of what happens if they lose a fight.
This holds true for most animals,
all lacking our reasoning skills,
we tell ourselves we make these codes
to ensure we don’t harm or kill.
As if we all sat down one day
and said,’We’ll do this to survive,’
or we say that it comes from God,
Who is watching over our lives.
Now I won’t speculate on that,
no human mind can think that large,
but I wonder, is it hubris
to think that nature took no part?
To say that it all came from us,
when we’d evolved up to this state?
I know humans can do so much,
but have we ever been that great?
A thought that’s been nagging at me
when I see the animal realm,
all species seem to have a check
so that they do not overwhelm.
The predators are limited
by the abundance of their prey,
they can never outnumber them,
or they’d starve with nothing to slay.
The herbivores are limited
by the predator's claws and teeth,
so they don’t grow and crop the plants,
like the endless deer in the east.
We’ve long known of nature’s balance,
but when looking at human kind,
it seems something more is needed
to restrain advanced human minds.
Because when it comes to killing
most admit, we’re a class all our own,
the reason that has propelled us,
makes us the cruelest ever known.
Bears that are ten times human strength
run in fear of us at mere sight,
tigers that once ruled the jungle
barely even put up a fight.
Small pox that killed millions of us
was purposely wiped from the earth,
we could glass this entire planet,
and make its very atoms hurt.
How does evolution check this?
What keeps these skills from running mad?
As we’ve seen from sociopaths
an unrestrained human is bad...

When I began to paint canvases, all of my girls had
one hair color, they were monochrome.
I was fearful of trying anything else.
Timid.
Hesitant.
Unsure, not wanting to waste supplies.
Canvases are expensive.
I shocked myself the first time I decided to
try two colors. That was four years ago, but I
remember the agony it caused, as I deliberated
about wasting an eight dollar canvas.
Today I have put together a girl with five hair
colors, and I am deliberating about adding a sixth.
I have painted five such girls in the past week.
Evolution is a beautiful time, and experience
makes you daring.

Hey World!
we all have moments when we need the help of someone else,
elsewhere we're just out there,
suffering in the silent struggles of self.
it's not selfish to be self reliant unless it makes you self centered.
At the center of one man's island near the gates where the lonely entered.
The entrance where the hindrance of arrogance commence to make sense of our bull.
So, who owns the bull that took a on my lawn? My lawn was fertilized till they burglarized the rise of my dawn.
By the dawns early light,
I was tired from the fight,
between the need of a good sleep,
and a restless cold night.

Have you heard a heart beat?
Do you know the value of your soul?
Or did you cover up your eyes?
Did you just throw your questions down a hole?
A frightened hold on opinion
Because it hides everything inside a shell
A book that tells you what we are
Is a mask that alienates you in your hell
So sure of what you’ll be
You ride inside the comfort train
The passengers have your face now
You bought a one way ticket to your pain
You’re centred in your anger
But you camouflage it with the sky
The raining has an answer
But you’re still safe under your lies
So innocent in envy
So graceful with your hate
You’re touching up your actions
While what’s inside just rots away
You’re sucking up your anger
It’s so perfect in denial
You’ve figured all your answers
The tape repeats them while you cry
