A faint perfume of lilac blooms has stirred the sleeping dawn
Bright sunlight weaves a golden loom with threads across the lawn
Crisp white-lipped Delphiniums tossed snowflakes to the hills, while
Daffodils and pink jonquils shake off the morning chill
Each violet of morning has left no stone deferred
Found growing near, a sprout appears from every seed interred!
Greeting me like candle flames, are poppies, gold and red
Hawthorne weaves a golden crown around the arbor's head!
I look long past the windowpane, and spring has bloomed anew,
just in time to see the sky revealed in shades of blue
knitting primroses in surprise! A sight long overdue!
Lost between the flagstones, alyssum, wild and free, has
mushroomed into puffs of white, competing with sweet peas!
New sprouts of cosmos spring alive in flowerbeds we've teased
On winter's lace a pansy face is smiling up at last!
Petunias in their pastel coats, are dressed like royalty
Queen of all in velvet robes, the iris crowns the grass!
Resplendent are the foxgloves…..and the dragons are a Snap!
Sweet Williams are such gentlemen, they make the morning grand
Tiger lilies brave the wind, stalking in the breeze
Under every shady tree, violas are reprieved, while
verdant shades of primrose lace wear green upon their sleeves
Wisteria's hysteria spreads levity with ease!
Xanadu is Statice "quo"……now, what more could it do?
Yarrow blooms tomorrow. I'll have to dry a few
Zinnias mean that spring has sprung, to share fresh air with you!

Serenity Of Blue
As in our rivers' varied tints of blues,
the color blends are peaceful and serene,
in ripples of reflective color hues
that mirror mix of sky and hills of green.
Yet, 'midst the flowers in our fields that grow,
real blue in blooms is very scarce indeed.
The few we see will thrill us with their show;
Delphiniums or blue wildflower weeds.
And too, in foods the color blue is rare
most fruits display a color that attracts,
like tangerine, red apple, plum, and pear;
somehow the color blue in food detracts.
So nature gifts us blues in soft sky blue
reflected in her rivers, lakes or seas.
Though rarest of earth colors, it is true,
serenity of blue will always please.

Boundless Blue
Born in a misty rainbow,
Blue slips out from her place
between her sisters Green and Violet,
painting the heavens azure,
covering the earth like the robe of Virgin Mary.
She floats into the ocean in a navy dress,
then waltzes on waves of the Danube.
Sailing the teal waters of alpine lakes,
she journeys to glaciers,
leaving her daiquiri-colored footprints on glacial ice,
taking some with her to cool the fires of Robert Frost.
She treads into meadows and gardens,
planting delphiniums, lupines, hydrangeas,
bluebells, and cornflowers to sprout in her wake,
with morning glories to climb fences.
People copy her free spirit,
painting their china in Delft and willow patterns,
sing “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Blue Velvet,”
“Blue Moon,” “Blue Hawaii,”
even play “Rhapsody in Blue” on their pianos,
blow their cobalt glass, dye their denims,
even their ice cream and candy.
They try to capture her lapis, turquoise, and royal sapphires,
pressing them into frames of silver and gold,
hanging them on chains.
She smiles at their craftsmanship,
then saunters down the path to the forest,
seeming to sway to her own swingy music.
With only her blue tick hound trotting beside her,
she picks wild blueberries, savoring the tart fruit
as its indigo juice runs down her fingers.
This poem was inspired by Meenakshi Raina's "Optimistic Orange". That poem is a great example of how fun it is to write about and personify a color. I encourage the rest of you to try it!

My garden calls to earths creatures one and all
No matter how big, no matter how very small
Amid ferns green lace to show her humble face
With rows of flowers and dainty plots of grace
My gardens’ beauty grows so fair with ample daily care
From the water nymphs I see they have a secret flair
Flirting fairies carry flowers that are grey and spent
Then open all the blooms of delicate petals heaven sent
They sprinkle silver sparkles in the early morning dew
A gift for the flowers lined up in a colorful revue
Newborn dainty bluebells nodding in the gentle breeze
Then come the hummingbirds to drink with rapid ease
I see the tulip cups of early spring so sweet in cherry reds
Perfect buds of roses glowing just like married newlyweds
Summer iris dance together where the delphiniums grow
All along the fence just as pretty as gifts tied in a bow
My favorite place to sit in all this happiness and garden bliss
Is among the frilly petals of the yellow Rose of Sharon hibiscus
Little sprites eyes peak out from the different dancing daisies
Beside the arbor you can stop to find the double pink peonies
Hurrah for the coming of Spring showers to start our display
That then tumbles through the days of summers archway
My garden calls me back to welcome Autumns magic delights
To gather the last of the seasons’ bouquets and fiery sights
I say goodnight and see you soon to my gardens’ magic guests
In their loving care I send them off to rejuvenate and rest
Then tuck to sleep petals and bulbs, all in their separate beds
Before winters’ blanket of snowy white covers our sleepy heads

My elderly friend and I walk along
the raised flower beds
full of rainbows of blooms,
becoming the mother and daughter
in the famous Renoir painting,
now with the daughter grown up.
We slow our pace,
gazing at pink and yellow dahlias,
velvety purple salvias, blue delphiniums,
hanging baskets of pink bleeding hearts,
red begonias everywhere we look.
Greenery frames the fountain’s dancing spray.
Down the paths of roses,
yellow, orange, white, lavender,
fuchsia, and bright red,
sunlight catches on my friend’s white hair
and the silver metal of her walker.
We stop at a carousel, watching
the pastel horses, the frog, the pig,
the cat with its fish, the goose, and the rabbit
rise and fall, round and round,
until she turns to me.
We part, as I head to ponds of lilies,
surrounded by orange flowers
I don’t recognize.
I picture my friend, smiling amid the roses,
her words echoing inside my mind:
I’m holding you back...back...back...
Go see the rest of the garden.
Go see the rest of the garden.

There’s a special place that I now recall
Both secret and safe in a garden wall,
Far my favorite space when I was small
Was that wooden gate in the garden wall.
And there beneath that garden way
One million tears were washed away
And drained themselves into the ground
To gain the solace I have found.
When I’ve spied a spot with a hidden door
That may lead to the rest I’m reaching for,
The sight of a hedge by a garden gate
Is the knowledge that mellows oft too late.
One entrance in a crumbling wall
Was childhood’s fancy to recall
While shadows cast upon the ground
Did guard the peace that patience found.
The permanence I ‘d felt inside that gate
Where no words alone could ever relate
In the simple fare of my life would be
Like an endless rope of eternity.
I’ve often thought as I recalled
The lonely times when I was small,
I’d lift my wings and follow play
And swing my early cares away.
Ten thousand timeless heads bobbed in the breeze
And shook in the wind and laughed in the trees,
Amidst delphiniums all blue and pink
I’d wait for that sun to just rise or sink
To seek what hides past that garden wall
Where hollyhocks grew so bright and tall,
There beyond the pulse of nature’s lush
Life slumbered deep in a twilight’s hush.
There’s many a gate in many a wall
That has been childhood’s option to recall
When time’s swift shadow played hide and seek
My simple fears had some courage to speak.
Full many a turn has come about
Since those youthful years pursued by doubt
Where the wishing days of life would be
Bound to each one’s goal with piety.
Now much time has flown and it’s far too late
To play in the yard and swing on the gate,
For the wall is gone and there in its place
Structures of brick with no smiles on their face.
Portals of magic beckon still
With aspirations dreams fulfill,
The useful aim of one’s end should be
Some gate that waits for posterity.

waves crash mist and spray
touch upon lighthouse's strong walls..
lights steadily warn
lightkeeper's sturdy
rock home filled with light warmth love..
unharmed as storm passes
delphiniums bloom
their gauze blossoms withstand storm..

You’re coming home today, my heart rejoice
To hear that baron tone and luscious voice
You’ll coming walking through that door
I’ll come flying, your bags drop to the floor
You’ll wrap your arms around my waist
Your lips will stick to mine like sticky paste
They’ll reminisce on the times we lost
And repay through hours, an unlimited cost
As I laid upon my moonlight bed
And skimmed through books I already read
Spread my arms across the white cotton sheets
A space as far as when the two Pacific’s meets
On the end side table, delphiniums placed in a glass
Ready for your sunshine, an awaiting storm to pass
Rainy clouds creeps, an unwelcome invitation
Boy, let me into that imagination
Barely can my lips speak your name
And for you are the only one to blame
When you’re gone, an everlasting dusk
The thought of you, provides a permanent lust
And this spell of love’s despair
Ripped apart it would compare
But the end is near of this tragic play
For you my love, are coming home today

Bright yellow daffodils,
Pansies, and gladiolus,
And chrysanthemums;
Red roses of unique hybrids;
Orange dahlias, peach tulips,
Fuchsia asters, and white lilies;
Blue hyacinths and delphiniums;
Purple anemones and begonias
Planted in various places….
Roses have unique names,
For instance, Poinsettia rose,
Mr. Lincoln rose, and even,
Queen Elizabeth rose.
White lilies will grow to
A magnificent size and height.
Nevertheless,
Be cautious that bunnies
Tend to nibble at
Their succulent petals.
Dahlias, on the other hand,
Vibrant colors of coral,
Mango, watermelon, pink,
Amber, terracotta and red,
Develop into an incredible size
That is remarkable.
And also, silvery green lamb’s ears
Scattered along the periphery
Of the twenty-five foot stone wall,
Gives the ultimate impression of
An extravagant rainbow of flowers
So vibrant and colorful….
What a sight to see!

Dramatic Verse
Over where the Delphiniums bloom Cornflower Blue
The Zephyr blows on quiet morns
Then the excited voices come to play
And screams resound in heat of day
Where splashes and laughter
Are common things
Stress disappears
Joy relaxation brings
Children smile with dimples
As water drips from hair
Drenched like salamanders
Once again where Delphiniums live

Sweet blue indigo were your eyes,
sometimes they appeared almost black
but in their reflection, I saw clear sky blue
with floating pastel aqua painted clouds.
In your tended garden, soft pale cyan croci rose
followed by tall taunt blue cornflowers
that stretched between the graceful cobalt delphiniums
that stood before summer cerulean hydrangeas.
Your laugh filled the garden with sapphire irises
that lived for but a day or two
and in the walking tour of flowers displayed,
each shade danced into a Persian setting sun.
Passing now those recalled memories and scents
I smell sweet lavender fill the air
and in my loneliness without you
the blue celeste fades to paler shades and hues.
The mix of white and gray shadow accompany me
and the sky turns cerulean tinged gray
and I wipe away the tears from my azure faded eyes
as blue midnights wrap around my heart.
Now, tincture steps into unblushed sky of winter
and all the colors tend to fade and disappear
like you.

In spring, when delphiniums are in bloom fair
Come to my garden where I will meet you then
We will talk about life and love without a care
When spring comes, the earth is young again
As everything comes alive, trees begin to thrive
Come to me when the apple trees are white shining
In the spring when the young corn plants survive
But will you stay when winter's white is pining
When the white snow is on the mountain top
And those northerly breezes bitingly blow
Will you still look forward to seeing the snowdrop
When the garden is aged, wrinkled and slow
Youth has loves advantage in strength and beauty
True love through age and wisdom fulfills its duty

I.
“A hiatus, not a parting.”
I waited until stones gathered
on the mothy carpet of the
living room. Then I stopped,
like mothers and fathers,
the un-watered
Delphiniums window-side.
II.
Laid a rusted finger on
the lip, the dredged ice,
Alaskan wind, a single
prayer before expatriation and
a loaf of pennies.
You don’t know what
opportune means (question mark)
III.
A thousand chests,
the ribs crumbling;
it’s a melody, a syncopation, some
Eucharist pre-hymnal tonal exercise.
We all waited for false angels,
the permanence of grief.

On your birthday may rose blossoms linger
With scents so pleasing abundant blooms to view
May Hummingbirds your blossoms visit eager
May all your birthday candles be blown out
May this be your best birthday without a doubt
May your Delphiniums and Daffodils grow
May on you much love_kindness always bestow
