Boundless Blue

Boundless Blue Born in a misty rainbow, Blue slips out from her place between her sisters Green and Violet, painting the heavens azure, covering the earth like the robe of Virgin Mary. She floats into the ocean in a navy dress, then waltzes on waves of the Danube. Sailing the teal waters of alpine lakes, she journeys to glaciers, leaving her daiquiri-colored footprints on glacial ice, taking some with her to cool the fires of Robert Frost. She treads into meadows and gardens, planting delphiniums, lupines, hydrangeas, bluebells, and cornflowers to sprout in her wake, with morning glories to climb fences. People copy her free spirit, painting their china in Delft and willow patterns, sing “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Blue Velvet,” “Blue Moon,” “Blue Hawaii,” even play “Rhapsody in Blue” on their pianos, blow their cobalt glass, dye their denims, even their ice cream and candy. They try to capture her lapis, turquoise, and royal sapphires, pressing them into frames of silver and gold, hanging them on chains. She smiles at their craftsmanship, then saunters down the path to the forest, seeming to sway to her own swingy music. With only her blue tick hound trotting beside her, she picks wild blueberries, savoring the tart fruit as its indigo juice runs down her fingers. This poem was inspired by Meenakshi Raina's "Optimistic Orange". That poem is a great example of how fun it is to write about and personify a color. I encourage the rest of you to try it! Hi. I hope to write like you. My mother loved blue Many things in our home were blue. The color makes me think of her. In my poem Le Jardin, my mother's pillow is blue. I wrote a poem about blueberries 2. Rhapsody In Blue makes me feel like she is near. She used to sing it in the bathtub when I was a child. "Someday he'll come along and he'll be big and strong.." I loved your poem, it was beautiful. My favorite line was "Seeming to sway to her own swingy music"

Hi Marikate! Did you know your comment made my night? This poem was inspired by Meenakshi Raina on Poetry Soup who wrote "Optimistic Orange". I highly recommend you visit her and read that. What is a color you like? What would it be like personified? What would it do? Think up different words for that color. Say you pick green, so other words might be lime, seafoam, chartreuse, etc. Soup Mail me when you post it. Good luck!

Greetings Jennifer, the shades of blue in your poem are exceptional. Blue as a woman is inspired. The final 2 lines, in particular, with its image of indigo juice on eager fingers are memorable. A truly fine write! Sincerest regards, Brian

Hi Daniel! Glad you like it. Check out Meenakshi Raina’s “Optimistic Orange”. It gave me the idea to personify a color. It might inspire you to try it too.

Hello Jennifer, Excellent imagery! I also love the way you anthropomorphize the color blue. This appears to include assigning a gender of female to the color and you do it all masterfully. Tradition would have us think of the color blue as male and pink as female. So much for tradition.

Hiya Thomas! Always so great when you stop by. If you like this, then check out Meenakshi Raina’s “Optimistic Orange”. That’s what gave me the idea to personify a color.

Hi Jennifer, Aqua blue (azure blue) has always been my favorite color. I love the way you let blue talk to the reader throughout this poem. Very well done! I never want to forget that the blues are the only musical form that originated in the United States. We can thank the slaves on southern plantations for that. This poem lifts my spirit.

Hi Thomas! I’m glad this poem could lift your spirit! Yes, the slaves really did give us good music. So sorry they were treated so horribly though.

I love all the different shades of blue here, especially azure, cornflower and cobalt, your blues can be a rainbow all by themselves! I also like the casual mention of the blue tick hound too :)
