Mama says this is where
I was born on a stormy night
the benignant horn was where
she'd paused to breathe and reside
The bounteous hollow took her in
and echoed my cries and coos
spiralling down the springs
to protect me as if I were Zeus
I slide along the spirals
to quench my itching thirst
a joyous melody in the hollow
and palatable unceasing food
When it rains we glide to be dry
it shields us from the biting frost
when it snows and humans sing
of the ballads of festive days
At nights I crawl and climb
to the window of that horn
and watch the lavender starry sky
she recites stories of distant worlds
Sweet symphonies of chirping birds
wake me up on fragrant mornings
at times I step outside the door
to wander in some nearby forest
"Do you stay inside that cornucopia?"
A giant cub questioned me one day
I looked at Mama with my little black eyes
and wished to know the same
"Honey, this is our humble dwelling
that nurtures us, protects us, loves us
as if this was the great destiny
of a humble horn of spirals
This is our door to a beautiful heaven
with aromatic clouds and winged doors
this will be the blissful abode of tiny beetles
who lived happily in a divine cornucopia"

The horn of plenty
on my grandparents’ table
as we sat feasting . . .
the thought of being apart
never entering our minds
though the years have fled
from my cornucopia . . .
new fruits spilling out
My cup is overflowing and
I brim with happiness because
of every blessing that I have
and every one that ever was!

For Brian Strand's Harvest Contest
Intricate patterns, exotic flowers
curl into royal insignias
cultured eyes can devour
A cornucopia of colours
Like a peacock's feathers on display
expanding and contracting
those myriad Eyes ~
Visual accordions at play
All this and more
covers the floor
of my living room
Please don't step on the rug
~ and a peacock deplume
A measure of human want,
Of mans unceasing desires,
Abundance of food in excess
Of what stomach can bear,
Of wealth and gilded jewels,
Of mansions and orchards,
Cornucopia from age of Zeus,
Unabating symbol of greed,
Stop to fill that mythical horn,
With generosity of your heart,
Throw goodness in good measure,
And for once fill a poor man’s cart!

Alas, I look at my options and I panic
Bewildered by my choices that feel so gigantic
Clarity seems a bit elusive right now
Dastardly and evasive to me somehow
Establishing an anchor is what I should do
For that would improve my point of view
Grasping for answers that dangle on the cliff
Hoping they're not written in hieroglyphs
Inevitably, they require a Rosetta Stone
Jargon jealously guarded by my evil clone
Knowing the searching is part of the solution
Lamenting the struggle in my elocution
Meditation on the Word is my only plan
Never failing me in my whole lifespan
Odds and ends conspire to be a distraction
Perfidious doppelganger desires inaction
Quit guiding me into this nebulous analysis!
Rid me of this spiritual paralysis!
Send me alacrity and precision of thought
That I might be worthy of what I was taught
Ubiquitous indecision depart from my heart
Vacuous hesitance, you've no wisdom to impart
While I am still filled with God-given breath
Xerosis of my body and soul will halt until death
Yearning for the truth and hope will succeed
Zero energy will be spent on despair or misery

My Horn of Plenty

Cornucopia
Trumpet Sounding – abundance Resounding –
A harvest not Empty – a horn of Plenty –
Season bounty Astounding – safe from snowbound Surroundings
Fall Caressing fair autumn Blessings.
Sweet orbs of Green or burgundy Seen
In arbors that Wait grape clusters to Take
Nectars Serene in fermenting Dreams
Dew mists so Fine like sparkling Wine.
Breath of Autumn whispers soft harvest Hymns
Ruffles ripe Fields of grain’s golden Yield
Blades salute skies Solemn - in straight rows, in Columns
Kernel berries grown for Bread - we bow our Heads.
Apples Reside – sweet juiciness Abides
Orchard boughs Seen in ornaments red, yellow, Green
Thoughts of pie Ride as cinnamon delight Glides
Crisp ciders Arrive in jugs and in Jives!
Frosty fall Dells painted in icy Pastels
Leave a transparent Sheen on rambling vines Green
Pepitas in Shells of bright orange they Dwell
In pumpkins and Squash - festive fields Awash
Such flavor Divine – like honey sweet Wine –
Wide bottomed Orbs - sun sweetness Absorbed -
A taste Refined – bliss, sublime, Intertwine –
Pears Appear at the end of the Year!
From blossom Wings nascent in Spring
Sweet surprise Resting in hard shells Nesting
Squirrels seasonal Fling – winter Investing -
Walnuts and Almonds, pecans by the mill Pond

As the window closes on Summer's breeze,
A door opens for Fall's colored leaves...
Crispy sweet apples and plump pumpkin squash,
Solitary scarecrow continues to watch.
Shorter days with longer nights,
Misty fog causes blurry sight.
Green turns into late season brown,
Barren limbs as leaves carpet ground.
Early morning frosted landscape,
Slight slips possible without wearing skates.
Knitted caps with oversized scarves,
Clouded breath leaves trails at large.
Gradual prequel to Winter's ice,
Some preparing hibernation
.....their need to survive.
Before harsh frozen winds begin to unseat,
They enjoy gorging upon Autumnal treats.
Familiarity of seasonal change,
Periodic in it's cyclic arrange.
From mountainous colors with snowy caps,
Nature's creatures fall into relapse....
Thanksgiving turkey and treats of Halloween,
After, Christmas yule tides upon the scene.
The caring and sharing of Nature's bounty,
Cornucopia horn full of plenty...
Indian summer--
appreciate thy bounty's

Thanksgiving
Windchimes make music that lingers in the mind,
Blessed by abundance of sharing what we find,
A feast spread out before us is quite divine.
With plates in hand, we're eager to wait in line.
Delicious aromas fill the chilly air.
Handmade pies and cakes are part of fancy fair.
This wonderful Thanksgiving our heads we bow,
To give thanks in prayer to God, our solemn vow,
To be mindful of our blessings and our friends,
And be grateful for the good in life God sends.

Autumn Glory
Colors of this season leave me spellbound...
The stunning brightness of the crimson leaves;
A mélange of rust, pumpkin, greens and gold.
I'm in awe of these sylvan canopies...
Reflections captured in pools from autumn rains.
The fresh air rejuvenates my burdened lungs;
Gifts my heart with solace into divine spring.

In the Mahabharata, the protagonist Dharmaputra
and his wife Kunti, driven out of their own land,
penniless and living in a forest, could host their numerous guests
(who had thrown their lot with them).
All that the royal couple did was to pray.
And the phenomenon is known as Akshaya patra,
The Indian synonym for cornucopia.
Once we (as a family) went
to a special restaurant
Run by persons to whom light and dark made no difference.
Pitch dark was the ambience.
We ate the meal with delight;
Thanked God, too, for the wonderful gift—of sight.
Let’s stay positive; miracles happen;
Cornucopia, then, may be a mindset.
