Premium Member Wrongful Conviction

Sweetened dung is shoveled down
gluttonous throats with eager appetites for
alleged misdeeds skillfully spun
into a frenzy of sensationalized hype
by media-seasoned reporters.
.
Seduced by speculation and hearsay,
a jury of pseudo-intellectuals assembles
neatly with moral turpitude tied
smug and tight around rigid white collars
stained heavy with sweat and anticipation.

She stands alone as the eyes of
the court pierce through her appraising
her posture and expression while
the echo of charges being read dissipates
with the smell of type ink and old mahogany.

Fragments of truth embellished
for shock-value and dramatic effect
spill forth as vomit
from confessional mouths
reeking of rot and fermentation.

Vulturous prosecutors rise in fluid
motion squawking accusations in
expert execution of closing arguments,
pecking apart flesh, unconscionably
scattering the meaty bones of her defense.

Premium Member See This Girl

See this girl in the painting, this skinny girl
working on a puzzle at the bottom of the stairs.
With big rimmed glasses and her plain brown hair,
she’s an ordinary girl, with nothing seeming special.

Now see this girl. . . really SEE this girl.
At age 12, she’s just been fitted with new glasses -
They are black horn-rimmed - an utter disappointment
in the life of a young girl.
Some guys now call her four-eyes, and they don’t even notice
the beauty of her light green eyes and
long lush lashes behind those big-framed glasses.
But still she likes to fantasize, and in her dreams
she’s idolized by every boy she likes.

Always having wanted to be part of the “in” crowd,
she was a girl that struggled for popularity.
However, she’s been learning of another way to be!
Seeking out girls more like her, she hardly has to try
to fit in with her new friends. And now she’s much less shy.
With fun new friends, she is witty. She makes them laugh.
She’s even feeling pretty, wearing lipstick frosty pink.
She’s discovered she is smart in all her classes.
This girl who now is wearing black rimmed glasses!

She gets into the Glee Club, even sings on PBS!
With her athleticism, she also has success.
She makes Top Twelve in tryouts for cheerleading.
And though the student body does not vote her through,
she’ll soon get over it. She’s blossoming!

The glasses she will change for contact lenses,
and she does not know it yet,
but soon enough - a number of boyfriends she will get!
Also years of dance lessons and being in recitals
has boosted her self confidence.
Both her body and her spirit are transforming!

See the girl in the painting; a puzzle she assembles.
She does not know that one day
her mind will be on puzzles of a very different kind:
She will be assembling many words inside her mind,
and she will be partaking in an art called poetry.
I know all this because
the girl inside that painting - that ordinary girl -
is the one I used to be.

Based on the painting "Assembling the Pieces"
from Contemporary Figurative Artiste Stephanie Deshpande
for the Contemporary Free Rhyme Contest of Cyndi MacMillan

I hope you will see the painting at this link. When I saw the girl, I was
struck by how much it looked like me as a young girl: http://www.stephaniedeshpande.com/porfolio/

Premium Member The Mystery of Before

The morning comes slowly,
first with a faint glow growing
in the sky above the fence,
then lifting to prod the feet
of clouds as if to wake them
and raise their rain heavy weight
up off the horizon.

My body fills the contours
of an old chair, positioned to catch
the first rays coming through
the window to see off the long night.
There are times when I feel
that the darkness will never end,
a thick black pall falling
across all thought,

but it goes and I begin
to take in the day. Some trick
of memory assembles me again,
puts me in a familiar place where
I know where the cups
and the coffee beans are kept
and somewhere
in my mind a gallery opens
with wall after wall
of familiar faces

and pictures of the past,
time stamped and strung out
way back to where all becomes
an impenetrable blur, nothing more
than a dreamless sleep out of which
I emerged as me
from the mystery of ‘before’.

Mocking Bird

The greatest pretender in the sky
is a thief in wings
and sings and sings in purloined folly.

A burlesque bird first loots a throat
then coddles every stolen note
and assembles every syllable

Then one by one in choral mime
as though true specie in the air
acts with incipit pompous dare.

And what honest notes could sound
that author care the see
that invention were an honest gift
achieved with authenticity.

As she embraces her loving instrument,
Dreams of playing in an orchestra
The soothing, warm, rich, clear, and relaxing sounds of the violin
                                       While in concerts discipline.
The slow, dips, and peaks pitch sounds reverberate,
As the bow dances around the strings and filtrates
Playing SONG ESCALA - CHI MAI as it escapes

An image of a couple unites,
                                                 In her mine
                                       Listening to the violin play
Waltzing with the soothing sound as it assembles

                                            On the veranda
She is in her finest long flowing gown,
He is in black tails, white ties and gloves,
Under the splendor of the brightness full moon and stars.
                                    Listening to a violin playing

As she embraces her loving instrument

                                                And waltz

*                                    *                                          *                                            *

I wander tonight, in a curious slumber *
My sleep is held captive by the man in the moon
He peeks through my window, while enchanting the room * Enticing my dreams, where a choir assembles

The heavens entrance me with musical rumbles
The clouds twirl around to melodious tunes
Enraptured tonight, in my curious slumber *
My sleep is held captive by the man in the moon

Against window glass, branches tap to a rumba
With the breeze blowing in, curtains swirl pirouettes
Joining in, are the nightingales, warbling duets
As showers of meteors fall into tumble
I wander tonight, in a curious slumber

Little Symbol Checker

Keen amoungst the lore lays symbols laden with, inmeshed.
The lines collasece,
they weave and dress,
and form assembles
we attest.
Now best, we seek, through learning eyes, the ever changing shape's surprise,
to thrive and die,
the feast of pies,
the ripe enchanted taste of fries.

Sweet potato, no doubt.
Least you a lout...

And the list goes on, endlessly.
The step and pop of rhythm's grace, astounding taps to set the pace...
And chase, the spin, the grip, release..
The shapes and sounds abound with fate.

And all the while our times compress.
the heart beat sets the pace in chest.
the breath goes on without our mind.
Leaving behind...
Leaving behind...
That once-born dream.

The sun explodes...

what but love could derive a meaning from that event?

First Kiss

Listen with a beckoned ear.

The way a tandem flock

Assembles to the gravity of warmth.

Fearlessly cascading the open sky.

Only to veer for nourishment

Or an unpredictable speck of dust.

A kiss is first science, then art.

Osculating the geometric curves of the fit.

Once true, a kiss becomes abstract to the senses.

Perceptively measured by taste and texture.

Come. Please.

While we are nestlings in this season.

Let’s experiment.

Perhaps practice with a pallet and brush.

The Flood

Smiling cities, laughing cities.
The flood came, speaking in loud voices.
Rushing and gushing, taking over houses.
Flagrant abusing the law of gravity,
going up not coming down.

The flood, overflowing the banks,
crossing the bridges,
running over canals,
toping the streams.
The flood came,
a running water.

The flood,
assembles rivers, builds oceans.
A running water, an agent of submerge.
Just like a riverbank, items deposited.
Who knows what is buried beneath the flood?
Who knows?

Not in a hurry to forget ‘Rita’,
Nor to forget Katrina.
What a tsunami?
The flood, a volcano of water eruption,
sinking deep in peoples life.

Solo Flight

In this valley of earth
the wind
comes with the same gift
the same solitary wind
that carries faith
without speaking

with the same sightless purity
that sees everything
as it is
that causes the same quiver of branches
that have pulled their skins
out of soil and rocks

The wind’s long horn blows
into this valley’s earthen jug
and applies its wisdom
as thin as
this silver hair that holds the heat
to my bones

this wisdom that assembles
and stirs above me watching
and me standing
below
in this valley as cold as heaven
where there has always been
and even now a river’s
unsaid oath
where birds drop feathers
where birds balance the wind
even in sleep

even when nothing moves
even when knowing that
each feather dropped
can fly

alone

each one
gifted with the wind’s wisdom

"Daydreams, let the music play on as dreams come true." Quote by poet

Beautiful young girl
Listens to a violin playing
As she embraces her loving instrument,
Dreams of playing in an orchestra
The soothing, warm, rich, clear, and relaxing sounds of the violin
While in concerts discipline.
The slow, dips, and peaks pitch sounds reverberate,
As the bow dances around the strings and filtrates
Playing SONG ESCALA - CHI MAI as it escapes
An image of a couple unites,
In her mine Listening to the violin play
Waltzing with the soothing sound as it assembles
As a floating feather touches down,
On the veranda
She is in her finest long flowing gown,
He is in black tails, white ties and gloves,
Under the splendor of the brightness full moon and stars.
Listening to a violin playing
As she embraces her loving instrument
And dreams of the day she will be the one playing
And waltz Under the splendor of the full brightness of the moon and stars.

When It Is Winter

Whence from shine the seasons to whom and to where

High on snow peaked mountains sits the Buddha under a fir tree

Exalted warm in the glow of change and stillness he mediates

Never ending contradictions assembles frost transcends right there

In the heat of the desert Northern lights shed their guidance

To similar truth’s complementation seek meaningful sense

In abandon vast perception’s years cycle from our point of views

Swift within and without riches and scrap heaps of dissimilar hues

When periods swell and spell interchange across planets and orbit

In constant revolution vison blind folded deceptions and ruses

No one come high tides water or drought can simply absorb it

The winter is summer as spring turns to autumn and perspective

Emerges in harmony when my lights in the South levitate from

Reclusion where wise humans freeze sweat which is highly subjective
