Premium Member So Long As the Poet Amuses Them All
Poetry is breathing out
graces of the heart; 
for unlike other writing,
such exhalation 
transcends words:
whether scented with sulfur
or mint de jour 
poetry is the soul’s lure
dangling immortality--

We are tempted to the brink;
whether dreadful fall
or bottomless sink
next step is uncontrollable:
rhyme with time
or proses with glows,
the shell broken
serpents...

Premium Member James Whitcomb Riley Amuses Me
I suppose it is surprising
And I shouldn't let you know it,
I've a hankering for the poetry
Of that old time Hoosier poet.
Perhaps you think his poems with
Their easy, rustic flavor
Are not poetic offerings
Sophisticates would savor.
"Little Orphant Annie"
Is a favorite of mine
Which I have read so often...
