Yesterday
Yesterday rolls upon my mind
like an incoming tide
that washes away the sands covering memories
buried in the shore of my soul, like broken shells
that is now revealed
sometimes I pick them up and hold them for awhile
then place them back to be buried again
sometimes I cast them away, too small to hold
the length of yesterday grows
and are filled with new memories
from every rising dawn and every fading horizon
between the light of day and the dark of night
where they pass unnoticed
until a memory burns like a signal fire
to show how far I have traveled
my yesterdays have begun to overflow
from so many years
and no matter how many tides of memories
flow upon the shore of my soul
some yesterdays will remain buried too deep to reach
whether through meditation or desire
I will keep my broken shells of memory
for once they were whole and beautiful
and though they are now only revealed fragments
I remember
and in remembering give life to them
so they once again lay on the shore of my soul
whole and beautiful
as the yesterday I traveled through
wanting to reach tomorrow
