the maples line the road
stiff in the winter chill
their branches gnarled and twisted
the bark grey
they stand on guard
stark against the blue winter sky
ancient trees of one
hundred years creaking, groaning
in the chilly wind
the trees look to be dead
but they are sleeping
and waiting for signs of spring
when their branches will
come alive with buds of leaves
then, one day like a miracle
the leaves will magically unfold
and the tree will now sway
in a warm spring breeze that caresses
the squirrels will scamper up their trunks
and scurry along those branches
all curved and curled
and birds will build nests in crooks
the sound of their chatter filling the air
