After having taught high school in a border town for 10+ years and talking with literally hundreds of people from the other side of the border, this is what they said they wanted. I put it into poetic form, but it's their hopes and dreams. It's how they see themselves as citizens of the United States.

Come out of the darkness, stand in the light. Speak from your heart and give us insight. Don’t treat us like animals lured by honey. Saying you care and you’ll give us your money. Offer instead, a small thread of hope, A plan to slow, illegal immigration, guns, dope. Shore up our borders, build a great wall, Help the murder and theft totals to fall. Give us a chance, a dream we can earn. The legal citizenship for which our hearts do yearn. Make America great, let us be a part. Workers can stay, would be a good start. Think of others, give up your greed. We’re just asking for the things that we need.

Powerful sonnet my friend.. great rhymes and flow.. I can see this one will relate to many current day issues as well.. most people just want to support their families and have a good life... i dont know why we have borders.. when most empires ravaged and raped and took for their own gratification and now they complain about people crossing borders... excellent sonnet.

I tend to agree with you Silent One. I think, however, that borders are necessary to control the flow of drugs and terrorist activities. We need a major overhaul of the process to become an American citizen. There's got to be a better way (more efficient way) than our current outdated laws. So many from everywhere, just like the Ukrainians in Poland...Palestinians are rushing South to the Sinai Peninsula. Refugees everywhere, Bill. Fascinating that you worked in a Texas border town. Can't fix anything with hate, just look at the civil war between the Republicans, oye vey!

I agree, Anaya, all this hate is tearing our country apart. Both parties don't seem to be anything like they were 50 years ago. Most normal people just want to work and be able to support their families. I s that too much to ask from one of the richest countries in the world? Smiles ~ Blessings Bill

Nice, deft touch here. Would that you had been President instead of Grumpy Trump and that imbecile Biden. We either squeeze too hard or open the floodgates of the Pandora's box. Idiots in the White House who we chumbalones actually vote for. ~ Baker for President!
