Open Your Eyes

Open your eyes, Africa.
They have returned —
not with guns this time,
but with contracts and smiles.

You call them investors,
but they are the same colonizers,
only dressed in modern suits.

Why do you let your enemies
run your mines and gold fields?
Why do your children starve
while strangers eat from your soil?

Your copper, your lithium, your oil —
they leave your land raw,
and return to you as finished chains.

You cry for jobs,
yet you export them
with every ship of unprocessed ore.

Africa,
you are the pulse of the world’s economy,
yet you crawl in the dust
of your own abundance.

To the youth in the diaspora —
come home.
The continent calls you,
for the old guards have sold its soul.

Remove the thieves in power.
Their loyalty is not to the people,
but to the puppeteers who feed them.

Europe cannot live without you.
China trembles without your earth.
Then why do you kneel before them?

This is not the time to dream.
It is the time to awaken.
For the second colonization
is already here —
and its name is investment.

Hello Chanda, Congrats on POTD! So many fear to name the violence of contracts, the theft dressed as diplomacy, the soul-selling disguised as progress. And yet, you’ve also offered a path of return, reclaim, rise. The invocation to the diaspora is especially stirring for it’s not nostalgia, it’s strategy. It’s love with teeth. It’s path for resistance. With deep respect, Autumn Blessings, Chanda, Daniel

Your words capture exactly what I hoped to awaken — that love for our people and our continent must have teeth, courage, and vision. The diaspora’s return is not just memory, it’s mission. I’m truly honored by your understanding and your blessings.

Progress can be painful sometimes, especially for the poor and working class, no matter where you live. I would love to see changes in Africa as well as in hearts of the "explorer" (investors nowadays, eh?) Wonderfully enlightening poem. Congratulations on this very worthy POTD! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful words and deep reflection. Yes, progress often walks hand in hand with pain, especially for those unheard. May awareness awaken true change — in systems and in hearts alike. I truly appreciate your kind congratulations and support

It is sad that Africa is still being exploited by colonizers. History repeats itself. Many countries have been under colonial rule. It was through years of struggle that they were finally liberated. Congratulations Chanda on your POTD honor.

Thank you deeply for your thoughtful words and reflection. Yes, history has indeed repeated itself in different disguises — our liberation must now begin in the mind and in leadership. I truly appreciate your congratulations and your shared hope for Africa’s awakening.

Agreed! My cousin now has dual citizenship in USA and Kenya. He urges us to visit but I hear it is corrupt. I’m more inclined to visit Ghana because a museum group went and had a fabulous experience. I do intend to visit the motherland in the future!
