"The day my grandma died I was called by my uncle to go to the nursing home and told take whatever you want, the rest is going for donation. I stood in her room with her body still on the bed, weeping. At ninety-five she had little left of her life. But, I found her jewelry box and looking through it her pink clip earrings. The ones I recall from childhood when she would tell stories. They are now my most precious treasure. When I look at them I am back with grandma at the kitchen table listening with my huge little girl eyes. She encouraged me to write and is the reason I am the writer, I am today."

When my grandma died I was told,
to take what I want from her;
nursing home room whatever things I wanted.
I opened her old, tattered jewelry box,
and found pink earrings she always wore;
not pierced but clips and huge balls,
that's all I took- her pink earrings.
