Labyrinth of Loneliness

I've wandered through life's labyrinth alone Not knowing love in all these empty years A heart deprived will slowly turn to stone Eventually you find there's no more tears The path to happiness eludes me still Perhaps for me 'twas never meant to be I'll suffer through this destiny until The fate that none can flee has set me free There was a time I dared upon a chance And bared my heart to one I thought was true My solemn hope for friendship and romance Thus turned to dust and left me ever blue Cling tight to those who claim you as their own- For some the sun of love has never shone "All the lonely people, where do they all come from?" - Beatles

Gosh this is all so heartfelt... how sad is to give in to the blues. I really love how relatable Beatles' songs are at times.

Tom, great job describing loneliness and isolation. For someone with an inclination to love, that is a tough fate. There are a lot of lonely people around. How do we get those people to go out on dates? I'm not sure. They might be better off the way they are....it's so hard to know for sure. Smiles!!

Dear Tom, the rhythmic melancholy of your sonnet is beautiful and deeply moving. “A heart deprived will slowly turn to stone” - so sad so true. Your poignant pen shines as does your heart’s humanity. Warmest wishes my poet friend.. ~Suze

"Cling tight to those who claim you as their own- For some the sun of love has never shone" It is truly a blessing to be claimed as belonging to someone, a team and partner in life. I know you've found this with your wife but you've captured the longing of one who desperately desires this connection. This is where empathy is so imperative in a writer. A moving Sonnet! Xo

Yes, Sorry, I didn't intend to imply you've never felt these emotions yourself, unfortunately. I could wish you had not but I'm happy you've found love now! Yet even in love, we can have moments of loneliness that only our Heavenly Father can fill, huh? Xo

Tom heartfelt my friend to read this. I think at one time we all have experienced a sadness in being alone, I know I have and can relate to this truth of yours conceptually written. We all need love I think it makes us whole and complete and the nurturing is the icing on the cake. Others make us feel special whether we realize it or not. When there is a lack of it affects us deeply. This one is another favorite Tom your words always reach the readers soul deep within... A fav my friend...

Dear Tommy, a beautifully poignant and heartfelt poem The imagery of life's labyrinth and the slow hardening of a deprived heart evoke a deep sense of longing and sorrow in a melancholic elegance. The final couplet is particularly striking, offering a bittersweet truth that lingers. All those Lonely People, I love that song Hugs

Hi Tom, this is a heartfelt poem and one written in the perfect form of a sonnet. Love can elude some. Instead of going after people who reject us, cling on to the ones who dearly love us. The concluding couplet is so true to reality.

' A heart deprived will slowly turn to stone. No one is * truly * alone in this world. So sad that many don't realize this. For those unable to find love or a friend, when you open your heart, staying true to who you are; the right person will come along. Tender thoughts, Tommy. Hugs, Brandy

So trying and true. The path a difficult one when loneliness hardens our very soul. To have loved unrequitedly is better than to never have been loved at all. Such sonnets as yours is brave, bold and, beautiful . Thanks for sharing. I know you really aren't lonely, you are a very lucky man, Tommy.

This is a beautifully melancholic poem, and the Eleanor Rigby reference at the end ties in perfectly. The structured form and rhyme scheme enhance the feeling of inevitability and entrapment, much like the labyrinth metaphor suggests. The imagery is powerful--"a heart deprived will slowly turn to stone" is especially striking, and the idea of love turning to dust reinforces the sense of loss and longing. The final couplet delivers a poignant truth, urging appreciation for love, as some never get to experience it.

This sonnet truly tears at the heart strings, Tom. It reminds me of the old adage: "Tis better to have loved and lost than never loved at all." (Alfred Lloyd Tennyson). I hope it's only a poem for you but if its truth revealed it's a courageous piece of writing expressing very personal pain, anguish and vulnerability. In any case, it's a moving and masterful piece of poetry. Kudos to you Sir
