(For Dad ... I love you and miss you, and time doesn't help) ~ Of all the loved ones chosen for that final task that saints abhor, I wouldn't head your list, I'm sure - your eyes, then staring, empty ... I sat beside your deathbed, lone, and counted each dry, rattled moan, the hours ached for seeds, unsown - with your eyes staring, empty ... Why was I chosen for this fate that put your end upon my plate? a blessing, dear, but FAR too late - now that your eyes stare, empty ... No more, your prince of ill demands I walked you God-ward, hand-in-hand, there are no footprints in the sand - just eyes still staring, empty ... Soft lullabies, I sang you, tender, meant to quell a well-earned bender, closeness stamped "Return To Sender" - dear eyes just staring, empty ... You squeezed my hand, then let it go, let one last breath out, long and slow, though you had left us LONG ago - with your eyes staring, empty ... At night, I lay me down to sleep and pray the nightmares never creep, still, what I find there, dark and deep - are eyes still staring, empty ... Your sparkling eyes ... now empty.

I can feel the sadness and see eyes staring empty. Such heartfelt emotion. I was alone with mother and father when they passed away. I was blessed to be able to be there, but I have suffered the pain of being there. Life, in a moment, death. The missing never goes away. Congratulations on POTD.

the empty eyes, it's so sad. My dad looked so handsome in his coffin when he died two years ago,but the beautiful blue eyes , there was no soul behind them any more. you were a wonderful son and I know the loss still haunts you. Congrats on your win, Greg. I have not won with Craig since 2018!

Bard, you have described those last few moments so poignantly, and woven into your lines a melancholy mixture of blessings and regrets that I think many fathers/mothers/sons/daughters can relate to. "Though you had left us LONG ago" is so beautifully melancholy. The refrain of empty eyes is haunting. Congrats on your deserving POTD ~ John

Please permit me to belatedly say may you find solace in his name when spoken. May you feel his love each night before you rest your soul. He is not of the fallen but of the risen and he is with you still. A worthy write for POTD.

"Your sparkling eyes...now empty" seems to say it all. Love the different references to "eyes" at the end of each deeply emotive stanza. Congratulations on your POTD Gregory! Blessings to you.

Dear Greg, your words touch my heart so deeply. This thought- "Why was I chosen for this fate that put your end upon my plate?" I was there when my grandfather took his last breath. (Grandfather and Father) are different, I know. However, being there, watching him leave this earth- was both sad and peaceful, all at the same time. I know your heart is aching. Congratulations Greg, on Poem of the Day. I am sending you many hugs along the wind. ~ Brandy

Very poignant poem. The rhymes, images, similes, and repetition all add to the feeling of missing your father. I’m sorry for your loss, Gregory.

Gregory, The title says it all 'I Lay Me Down'. Holding on to the last, with pride and dignity failing. By the same one's who once taught us how to tie our shoes. Second set of hands I've seen in as many months. It's a strange arrangement nature holds for us mortals. -Richard
